AP Calculus BC
AP Calculus courses span an entire high school academic year and are equivalent to introductory college calculus. Students typically enroll with the goal of earning college credit, advanced placement, or both.
The AP Program outlines two distinct calculus courses and corresponding exams: Calculus AB and Calculus BC.
Any school with the capacity to design a curriculum for mathematically capable students can offer Calculus AB. The course must include all prerequisites listed on page 6. Designed as a full-year course, it allows some initial time for reviewing elementary functions while still covering the AB syllabus. However, to be thoroughly prepared for the AP Calculus AB Exam, the majority of the year should focus on the differential and integral calculus topics detailed on pages 6–9, which form the core of the exam.
Calculus BC is an option for schools whose students have already fulfilled all prerequisites outlined on page 6. This full-year course covers single-variable calculus, encompassing every topic from Calculus AB along with extra material. Despite these additions, both courses are designed to be equally rigorous, demanding a similar depth of comprehension for shared concepts. The BC syllabus is detailed on pages 9–12. Notably, a Calculus AB subscore is also provided, calculated from a student’s performance on the AB-related questions of the BC exam.
Both AP Calculus courses represent college-level mathematics, and most colleges award advanced placement and/or credit for strong exam performance. Universities typically offer a sequence of calculus courses, and incoming students are placed according to their AP exam results or other measures of readiness. Each institution sets its own credit and placement policies. Because BC covers more content, it often qualifies students for credit and placement in a course one level beyond what AB would grant. Many colleges post their AP credit policies in their catalogs and on their websites.
High schools have flexibility in how they implement AP Calculus. The best approach varies based on local factors such as school size, existing curriculum, teacher expertise, and the level of interest among students, educators, and administrators.
Strong performance in AP Calculus depends heavily on a solid foundation in prior math courses. Before diving into calculus, students should have mastery of the equivalent of four full years of high school mathematics, covering algebra, geometry, coordinate geometry, and trigonometry. The final year should include advanced algebra, trigonometry, analytic geometry, and elementary functions. Schools may achieve this through various pathways—starting math in 8th grade, encouraging multiple math courses in a single year, or offering summer and independent study programs. However, skipping essential preparatory coursework just to get into an AP course is not advisable.
The AP Calculus Development Committee advises that calculus be taught as a true college-level class. When students come in with strong preparation, they are ready for the course’s demands. The goal for enrolling in AP Calculus should be to bypass an equivalent college course, whether via the AP Exam, a college’s own placement test, or some other recognized path.
