AP Chemistry
AP Chemistry mirrors the typical general chemistry course taken during the first year of college. For some students,
this allows them to bypass introductory chemistry and start second-year work in the sequence right away, or to take courses in other fields where general chemistry is required. For others, it fulfills the laboratory science requirement, freeing up time for additional subjects.
A strong AP Chemistry program should meet the benchmarks of a high-quality college general chemistry course. Students need to gain a thorough understanding of fundamentals and become reasonably adept at tackling chemical problems. The course should also help them hone their ability to think critically and express ideas with clarity and logic, both in speech and in writing. College-level general chemistry is qualitatively different from a standard high school chemistry class in several ways: the textbooks used, the range of topics, a stronger focus on chemical calculations and mathematical formulation of principles, and the nature of the lab work. Quantitatively, the differences show up in the number of topics covered, the time students invest, and the variety and complexity of experiments. Schools that plan to offer AP Chemistry must be ready to provide a laboratory experience equal to what students would encounter in a college course.
