1. The Market and Marketing Mix |

The marketing mix is the set of controllable tactical marketing tools that a firm blends to produce the response it wants from its target market. The traditional framework consists of four elements: Product, Price, Place, and Promotion (the 4Ps).

Product refers to the tangible good or intangible service offered, including its design, features, quality, branding, and packaging. A well-designed product meets customer needs and differentiates the business from competitors.

Price is the amount customers pay; pricing strategies include cost-plus, penetration, skimming, competitive, and psychological pricing. Price conveys value and can position the product in the market.

Place involves the distribution channels and locations that make the product available to consumers, such as retailers, e-commerce, wholesalers, or direct selling. Efficient distribution ensures convenience and broad reach.

Promotion encompasses all the activities that communicate the product’s benefits and persuade customers to buy, including advertising, sales promotions, public relations, and personal selling. The promotional mix must align with the target audience.

For service-based businesses, the extended 7Ps add three further elements: People, Process, and Physical evidence. People refers to employees who deliver the service; Process covers the systems that ensure consistent delivery; and Physical evidence is the tangible environment that reassures customers (e.g., a clean clinic).

The table below contrasts the goods-focused 4Ps with the service-oriented 7Ps.

Product, Price, Place, Promotion
Services (7Ps) / 服务 Product, Price, Place, Promotion, People, Process, Physical evidence

2. Markets, Demand and Supply |

A market is any place where buyers and sellers come together to exchange goods or services. The interaction of demand and supply determines the equilibrium price and quantity traded.

Demand is the quantity of a product that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given period. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as price rises, quantity demanded falls.

Key factors that shift the demand curve include changes in income, tastes, prices of substitutes or complements, advertising, population demographics, and seasonal effects. An outward shift means higher demand at every price.

Supply is the quantity that producers are willing to offer for sale at each price. The law of supply suggests that higher prices incentivise producers to supply more, as profitability increases.

Supply shifts arise from changes in production costs, technological advances, taxes, subsidies, weather, and the number of suppliers. A fall in costs shifts supply to the right.

Equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply. If price is above equilibrium, a surplus exists; if below, a shortage. Market forces push price back toward equilibrium.

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. The formula is:

PED = % Change in Quantity Demanded ÷ % Change in Price

If PED > 1, demand is price elastic (luxuries, many substitutes); if PED < 1, it is inelastic (necessities, few substitutes). Businesses use this to predict revenue changes after a price adjustment.

3. Market Research |

Market research is the systematic collection, analysis, and interpretation of data about customers, competitors, and the market. It reduces risk in decision-making and helps identify opportunities.

Primary research gathers original data first-hand for a specific purpose, through surveys, interviews, focus groups, and observation. It is up-to-date but can be expensive and time-consuming.

Secondary research uses existing data, such as government reports, trade journals, market analysis, and internal sales records. It is quicker and cheaper, but may be outdated or less precisely matched to the business’s needs.

Qualitative research explores attitudes, opinions, and motivations through open-ended questions, providing depth. Quantitative research delivers numerical data that can be statistically analysed, such as market share percentages and satisfaction scores.

Sampling involves selecting a representative subset of the target population. Random sampling gives each member an equal chance, while stratified sampling divides the population into segments and picks from each to improve representativeness.

The table below summarises the main trade-offs.

Specific, relevant, confidential Costly, time-intensive
Secondary / 二手 Cheap, quick, broad scope May be outdated, generic
Qualitative / 定性 In-depth insight Hard to generalise, subjective
Quantitative / 定量 Measurable, comparable Lacks colour, may miss ‘why’

4. Business Objectives and Strategy |

Business objectives are the measurable targets that a firm aims to achieve. Common objectives include profit maximisation, growth, increasing market share, survival, social responsibility, and shareholder value.

Objectives should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This framework helps translate vision into actionable plans.

Strategy is the long-term plan to achieve these objectives. Tactics are the short-term actions that implement the strategy. For instance, a growth strategy might be supported by a pricing tactic of penetration pricing.

Ansoff’s Matrix is a classic strategic tool that identifies four growth directions based on products and markets:

Market penetration aims to sell more of existing products in existing markets, often through increased promotion or lower prices. Market development takes existing products into new geographic or demographic markets.

Product development creates new products for existing customers, such as a new flavour or upgraded device. Diversification introduces new products into new markets and carries the highest risk, but can spread risk if successful.

STP marketing – Segmentation, Targeting, and Positioning – helps a business identify distinct customer groups, select the most attractive segments, and create a clear image in the chosen customers’ minds.

5. The External Environment (PESTLE) | 外部环境(PESTLE 分析)

PESTLE analysis examines the macro-environmental factors that can influence business decisions. The acronym stands for Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal, and Environmental factors.

Political factors include government stability, tax policies, trade restrictions, and regulations on competition. A change in corporation tax directly affects post-tax profits.

Economic factors cover interest rates, inflation, exchange rates, unemployment, and the stage of the business cycle. High inflation can erode consumer purchasing power and raise input costs.

Social factors relate to demographic changes, lifestyle trends, attitudes toward work, and cultural norms. An ageing population increases demand for healthcare and retirement services.

Technological factors involve automation, digital platforms, artificial intelligence, and research and development. E-commerce technology has transformed retailing and customer expectations.

Legal factors cover employment law, health and safety, data protection (e.g., GDPR), and consumer rights. Compliance adds costs but also protects the firm’s reputation.

Environmental factors relate to sustainability, climate change, pollution, and resource scarcity. Businesses must increasingly consider carbon footprints and circular-economy principles.

Together, PESTLE helps a firm anticipate threats and seize opportunities in the external environment that it cannot control.

6. Financial Information and Analysis |

Financial information enables managers to plan, control, and make decisions. Key tools include break-even analysis, cash flow forecasts, budgets, and profitability ratios.

The break-even point is the output level at which total revenue equals total costs, resulting in neither profit nor loss. The formula is:

Break-even Output = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per Unit − Variable Cost per Unit)

Contribution per unit is the excess of selling price over variable cost, which contributes towards fixed costs and then profit. The margin of safety is the gap between actual output and break-even output; a larger margin reduces risk.

Cash flow forecasts estimate future inflows and outflows to identify liquidity problems. Cash is needed to pay suppliers and wages
