1. States of Matter and Kinetic Theory |

The kinetic particle theory explains the behaviour of solids, liquids and gases based on the motion and arrangement of particles.

In solids, particles are held in fixed positions by strong forces and can only vibrate; in liquids, particles are close together but can move past each other; in gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions.

Changes of state such as melting, boiling and evaporation occur when particles gain enough energy to overcome the attractive forces between them. The reverse processes involve a loss of energy.

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of high concentration to a region of low concentration, and the rate of diffusion increases with temperature.

2. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |

Atoms consist of a central nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in shells.

The atomic (proton) number defines an element, and the mass number is the total of protons and neutrons. Isotopes are atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.

Electrons fill shells in the order 2, 8, 8 … The electronic configuration determines an element’s chemical properties. The periodic table arranges elements in order of atomic number into periods (rows) and groups (columns).

Group I elements are alkali metals, Group VII are halogens and Group 0 are noble gases. Elements in the same group have the same number of electrons in their outer shell and therefore similar chemical properties.

3. Chemical Bonding and Structure |

Ionic bonding involves the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non-metal, forming oppositely charged ions that attract in a giant lattice.

Compounds such as NaCl and MgO have high melting and boiling points due to strong electrostatic forces between ions, and they conduct electricity when molten or in aqueous solution.

Covalent bonding occurs when non-metal atoms share pairs of electrons. Simple molecular substances like H₂O and CO₂ have low melting points and do not conduct electricity.

Some covalently bonded substances form giant covalent structures, such as diamond, graphite and silicon dioxide, which have very high melting points. Graphite can conduct electricity because of delocalised electrons between its layers.

Metallic bonding is the attraction between positive metal ions and a ‘sea’ of delocalised electrons. This explains the malleability, electrical conductivity and high melting points of metals.

4. Stoichiometry and the Mole Concept |

The mole is the amount of substance containing the Avogadro constant (6.02 × 10²³) of particles. One mole of any substance has a mass equal to its relative atomic or formula mass in grams.

You can calculate the number of moles using the formula: moles = mass ÷ molar mass.

Concentration of a solution is given by concentration = amount of solute (mol) ÷ volume of solution (dm³).

Avogadro’s law states that equal volumes of all gases, at the same temperature and pressure, contain the same number of molecules. At room temperature and pressure (r.t.p.), one mole of any gas occupies 24 dm³.

Percentage yield = (actual yield ÷ theoretical yield) × 100% and percentage purity = (mass of pure substance ÷ mass of sample) × 100%.

5. Electrolysis | 电解

Electrolysis is the decomposition of an ionic compound, when molten or in aqueous solution, by passing an electric current through it.

The positive ions (cations) move to the cathode (negative electrode) and gain electrons (reduction). The negative ions (anions) move to the anode (positive electrode) and lose electrons (oxidation).

In the electrolysis of molten lead(II) bromide, PbBr₂(l) → Pb(l) at cathode + Br₂(g) at anode. This is used to extract reactive metals.

When an aqueous solution is electrolysed, the products depend on the relative reactivity and concentration of the ions present. For concentrated NaCl(aq), chlorine gas is produced at the anode and hydrogen at the cathode.

Electrolysis has important applications including the extraction of aluminium from aluminium oxide, electroplating of objects and purification of copper.

6. Energy Changes and Reaction Rates |

Exothermic reactions release heat energy to the surroundings (e.g., combustion, neutralisation), while endothermic reactions absorb heat from the surroundings (e.g., thermal decomposition).

The enthalpy change ΔH is negative for exothermic and positive for endothermic reactions. Energy level diagrams and bond energy calculations can be used to determine ΔH.

The rate of a chemical reaction can be increased by increasing the concentration of reactants, raising the temperature, increasing the surface area of a solid, or adding a catalyst.

Collision theory states that for a reaction to occur, particles must collide with sufficient energy (activation energy) and the correct orientation.

Catalysts provide an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, thereby speeding up the reaction without being consumed.

7. Equilibria and Reversible Reactions |

Some reactions are reversible; they can proceed in both the forward and backward directions, e.g., N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g).

At dynamic equilibrium, the rates of the forward and reverse reactions are equal, so the concentrations of reactants and products remain constant.

Le Chatelier’s principle states that if a system at equilibrium is subjected to a change in concentration, temperature or pressure, the position of equilibrium shifts to oppose the change.

For the Haber process, a high pressure favours the forward reaction (fewer gas molecules), while a lower temperature favours the exothermic forward reaction, but a compromise temperature is used to achieve a reasonable rate.

8. Acids, Bases and Salts |

An acid is a substance that donates protons (H⁺ ions) in aqueous solution. Common strong acids include HCl, H₂SO₄ and HNO₃. A base neutralises an acid to form a salt and water.

Alkalis are soluble bases that release hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water. The neutralisation reaction can be summarised as H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l).

The pH scale measures the acidity or alkalinity of a solution from 0 (strongly acidic) to 14 (strongly alkaline), with 7 as neutral.

Salts can be prepared by reacting an acid with a metal, a base, a carbonate or through titration. The choice of method depends on the solubility of the reactants and the desired salt.

Soluble salts can be made by titration and crystallisation, while insoluble salts are prepared by precipitation (mixing two solutions).

9. Redox Reactions |

Oxidation and reduction can be defined in terms of electron transfer. Oxidation is the loss of electrons, and reduction is the gain of electrons.

An oxidising agent accepts electrons and is reduced; a reducing agent donates electrons and is oxidised. For example, in the reaction Zn + Cu²⁺ → Zn²⁺ + Cu, zinc is oxidised and copper(II) ions are reduced.

Redox reactions can also be identified by changes in oxidation states. The oxidation state of an uncombined element is zero, and for a simple monatomic ion it equals the charge on the ion.

Combustion of fuels, rusting of iron and the reactions in electrolysis are all examples of redox processes. In the blast furnace, iron(III) oxide is reduced by carbon monoxide: Fe₂O₃ + 3CO → 2Fe + 3CO₂.

10. Introduction to Organic Chemistry |

Organic chemistry is the study of carbon-based compounds. A homologous series is a family of compounds with the same general formula, functional group and similar chemical properties.

Alcohols contain the –OH functional group (e.g., ethanol C₂H₅OH). They can be oxidised to carboxylic acids and are used as fuels and solvents.

Addition polymerisation involves many alkene monomers joining together to form a long polymer chain. For example, ethene forms poly(ethene).

11. Chemical Analysis and Identification |

Pure substances have fixed melting and boiling points. Impurities lower the melting point, broaden the melting range and raise the boiling point.

Chromatography separates mixtures based on their different solubilities in a solvent. The Rf value = distance moved by substance ÷ distance moved by solvent front.
