Marginal cost is the extra cost of producing one more unit of output. It is found by the change in total cost divided by the change in quantity:

In economics, the short run is a period during which at least one factor of production is fixed. In the short run, a firm can only increase output by employing more of the variable factors, which eventually leads to the law of diminishing returns and rising marginal costs.
