2. Question 1: Demand Curve Shift |

Which of the following would cause a rightward shift of the demand curve for organic food? (Assume organic food is a normal good.) A. A fall in the price of organic food. B. An increase in consumer incomes. C. A subsidy to organic food producers. D. An improvement in technology in organic farming. [1 mark]

Answer: B

答案:B

An increase in consumer incomes raises the ability to purchase organic food, shifting the demand curve to the right. Option A causes a movement along the demand curve (change in quantity demanded), not a shift. Options C and D reduce production costs and shift the supply curve to the right, not the demand curve.

3. Question 2: Price Elasticity of Demand |

If the demand function is Qd = 100 − 2P, what is the price elasticity of demand when P = 10? A. −0.25 B. −0.5 C. −1 D. −2 [1 mark]

−0.25 B. −0.5 C. −1 D. −2 [1分]

Answer: A

答案:A

Using the formula PED = (dQ/dP) × (P/Q). Here dQ/dP = −2. When P = 10, Q = 100 − 20 = 80. So PED = −2 × (10/80) = −0.25. The negative sign indicates an inverse relationship, and the absolute value 0.25 shows inelastic demand.

4. Question 3: Negative Externality |

Which of the following is an example of a negative externality in production? A. A firm training its workers. B. A factory emitting pollution into a river. C. A consumer buying a new smartphone. D. A restaurant offering a discount. [1 mark]

Answer: B

答案:B

A negative externality occurs when a third party suffers a cost not reflected in the market price. Pollution from a factory harms others without compensation, making it a classic negative production externality. Option A is a positive externality (training benefits other firms). Options C and D are consumption activities without direct third-party costs.

5. Question 4: Tax Incidence |

Suppose the government imposes an indirect tax on a good with perfectly inelastic demand. The burden of the tax will fall: A. entirely on producers. B. entirely on consumers. C. equally on consumers and producers. D. cannot be determined. [1 mark]

Answer: B

答案:B

With perfectly inelastic demand, consumers do not reduce quantity demanded when the price rises. Therefore, producers can pass the entire tax on to consumers through a higher price. The equilibrium quantity remains unchanged, and the incidence falls 100% on buyers.

6. Question 5: Opportunity Cost |

The opportunity cost of a decision is best defined as: A. the total monetary cost of the decision. B. the value of the next best alternative forgone. C. the sum of all alternatives given up. D. the benefit gained from the decision. [1 mark]

Answer: B

答案:B

Opportunity cost refers to the benefit lost from the next best alternative when a choice is made. It is not the sum of all alternatives, and it often includes non-monetary factors. This concept is central to resource allocation in economics.

7. Question 6: Factors Reducing Supply |

Explain two factors that could cause a fall in the supply of coffee. [4 marks]

Suggested Answer: One factor is adverse weather conditions, such as drought or frost, which reduce coffee crop yields, shifting the supply curve leftward. Another factor is an increase in the cost of production, for example higher wages for coffee pickers or rising fertiliser prices, making coffee production less profitable at each price level and reducing quantity supplied.

8. Question 7: Maximum Price and Market Outcome |

Using a diagram, explain how a maximum price set below the equilibrium price affects a market. [6 marks]

Model Answer: A maximum price (price ceiling) is a legal maximum above which the good cannot be sold. If it is set below the equilibrium price Pe, the market price is forced down to Pmax. At Pmax, quantity demanded Qd is greater than quantity supplied Qs, resulting in a shortage equal to Qd − Qs. This leads to non-price rationing, such as queuing or black markets, and a loss of allocative efficiency. The diagram should show a downward-sloping demand curve, upward-sloping supply curve, equilibrium at (Qe, Pe), a horizontal line at Pmax below Pe, and the corresponding shortage.

9. Question 8: Minimum Wage and Unemployment |

Discuss whether a rise in the national minimum wage will always lead to an increase in unemployment. [6 marks]

Discussion: In a competitive labour market, a minimum wage set above the equilibrium wage rate creates a surplus of labour—classical unemployment. However, it may not always increase overall unemployment. In a monopsony labour market, a minimum wage can raise both wages and employment up to a certain level. Moreover, higher wages can boost worker productivity and reduce labour turnover, offsetting job losses. Also, if the minimum wage rise stimulates consumer spending, aggregate demand and derived demand for labour could rise. Thus, while a negative employment effect is possible, it is not inevitable and depends on market structure and broader economic conditions.

10. Question 9: Market Equilibrium and Disequilibrium |

The table below shows the demand and supply schedules for pizzas in a local market.

Price ($) Quantity demanded (Qd) Quantity supplied (Qs)
10 100 40
12 80 60
14 60 80
16 40 100

(a) State the equilibrium price and quantity. (b) If the price is set at $10, state whether there is excess demand or excess supply, and calculate its size. [4 marks]

Answer: (a) Equilibrium occurs where Qd = Qs, i.e. at a price of $14 and quantity of 60 units. (b) At P = $10, Qd = 100, Qs = 40. There is excess demand (shortage) of 100 − 40 = 60 units.

11. Question 10: Costs of Production |

A firm’s total cost function is given by TC = 100 + 2Q + 0.5Q², where Q is output. Calculate: (a) the firm’s fixed cost; (b) the average total cost (ATC) when Q = 10; (c) the marginal cost (MC) when Q = 10. [5 marks]

Answer: (a) Fixed cost (FC) = 100 (the constant term independent of Q). (b) ATC = TC / Q = (100 + 2×10 + 0.5×10²) / 10 = (100 + 20 + 50) / 10 = 170/10 = 17. (c) MC is the derivative of TC: dTC/dQ = 2 + Q. At Q = 10, MC = 2 + 10 = 12.

(b) ATC = TC / Q = (100 + 2×10 + 0.5×10²) / 10 = (100 +
