📚 A-Level Edexcel Economics: Demand and Supply Key Points | A-Level Edexcel

This comprehensive revision guide covers the essential demand and supply topics for the Edexcel A-Level Economics specification. Mastering these fundamentals is crucial for understanding how markets operate, how prices are determined, and how economic agents respond to changes in market conditions.

1. The Law of Demand |

The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, there is an inverse relationship between the price of a good and the quantity demanded. When price increases, quantity demanded decreases; when price decreases, quantity demanded increases.

This relationship is illustrated by a downward-sloping demand curve. The demand curve shows the quantity of a good that consumers are willing and able to purchase at each price, per period of time.

The two key reasons for the downward slope are the income effect and the substitution effect. The income effect: as price falls, the consumer’s real purchasing power increases, so they can buy more. The substitution effect: as price falls, the good becomes relatively cheaper compared to substitutes, prompting consumers to switch away from substitutes.

A demand schedule is a table that shows the relationship between price and quantity demanded. For example:

Price (£ per unit) Quantity Demanded (units per week)
1.00 10
0.80 25
0.60 45
0.40 70
0.20 100

Note that the relationship is inverse: as price falls, quantity demanded rises.

2. Movements along vs. Shifts of the Demand Curve |

A movement along the demand curve is caused solely by a change in the price of the good itself, leading to
