This guide distils the core principles of the Cambridge IGCSE™ Chemistry Coursebook with Digital Access, mapping directly to the CIE assessment objectives. It covers the fundamental topics every student must master: the particulate nature of matter, atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry, energetics, acids and bases, redox, periodicity, organic chemistry and experimental skills.

1. The Particulate Nature of Matter |

All matter is composed of tiny, constantly moving particles. This kinetic particle model explains the properties of solids, liquids and gases.

In solids, particles are closely packed in a regular lattice and vibrate in fixed positions. In liquids, particles are still close but can slide past one another. In gases, particles are far apart and move randomly at high speeds.

State changes are physical processes: melting (solid → liquid), freezing (liquid → solid), boiling (liquid → gas), condensation (gas → liquid) and sublimation (solid → gas). During a state change, the temperature remains constant while the energy is used to overcome or form interparticle forces.

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration, driven by random motion. It is fastest in gases and slowest in solids, and provides evidence for the particulate model.

2. Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table |

An atom consists of a tiny, dense nucleus containing protons and neutrons, surrounded by electrons arranged in shells. The atomic number (Z) equals the number of protons, while the mass number (A) is the sum of protons and neutrons.

Electrons occupy shells around the nucleus: the first shell holds up to 2 electrons, the second and third shells hold up to 8 electrons (2,8,8 arrangement for the first 20 elements).
