📚 GCSE AQA Physics: Essay Writing Template | GCSE AQA 物理:Essay写作模板

Extended response questions, often called essay questions, are a vital part of the AQA GCSE Physics exam. They test your ability to explain scientific ideas clearly and logically, often across multiple topics. A well-structured essay can secure those high marks that make the difference between grades.

1. Understanding the Mark Scheme |

AQA 6-mark questions are levelled, meaning examiners look for a logical sequence of scientific points, correct use of terminology, and supporting evidence. Spelling, punctuation and grammar (QWC) also count. To reach the top band, your answer must be coherent, detailed and show a thorough understanding of the physics involved.

Always read the level descriptors in the mark scheme – they highlight what a top-band response looks like. For example, a Level 3 answer ‘presents a coherent explanation linking relevant principles from different areas of the specification’.

2. Breaking Down the Question |

Before writing, underline command words such as ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’, ‘compare’ or ‘describe’. These tell you what the examiner wants. ‘Explain’ requires reasons and mechanisms; ‘evaluate’ asks for pros and cons or a judgement. Circle key scientific terms – they usually point to the topics you must include.

For instance, if a question says ‘Explain why a balloon expands when heated’, the keywords are ‘balloon’, ‘expands’ and ‘heated’. You should link to particle model theory: kinetic energy increase, faster particle movement, increased pressure, causing expansion.

例如,如果题目说 ‘Explain why a balloon expands when heated’,关键词是 ‘balloon’、‘expands’ 和 ‘heated’。

3. Planning and Structure |

Spend 2–3 minutes planning a rough structure. A clear plan prevents you from going off-topic. A reliable essay template has three parts: Introduction, Body (2–3 paragraphs) and Conclusion. Use mind maps or bullet points to organise core ideas before you start writing.

Your plan should answer: What key physics principles apply? Which equations might be relevant? What examples or applications support the point? A logical flow might be: state the main idea, provide evidence, explain the physics, and link back to the question.

4. Crafting the Introduction |

A strong introduction engages with the question directly. Restate the problem in your own words and briefly outline the scientific direction you will take. You can begin with recognised templates: ‘This essay will explain how…’ or ‘In this answer, the relationship between … and … will be examined.’

你可以用公认的模板开头:‘This essay will explain how…’(本文将解释…… 或 ‘In this answer, the relationship between … and … will be examined.’(本答案将考察……

For example, for a question on braking distance, you might write: ‘The braking distance of a vehicle is affected by multiple factors, including speed, road conditions and tyre quality. This essay will explore the physics behind these influences using ideas of kinetic energy, friction and work done.’

例如,对一个关于刹车距离的问题,你可以写:‘The braking distance of a vehicle is affected by multiple factors, including speed, road conditions and tyre quality. This essay will explore the physics behind these influences using ideas of kinetic energy, friction and work done.’(车辆的刹车距离受多种因素影响,包括速度、路况和轮胎质量。

Each body paragraph should follow PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Make one clear point per paragraph, back it with an equation or real-world example, explain the physics in detail, and link back to the question or to the next paragraph.

每个主体段落都应遵循 PEEL:Point(观点)、Evidence(证据)、Explanation(解释)、Link(联系)。

Point: State what you will argue. Evidence: Insert a relevant equation, known value or scenario. Explanation: Unpack the ‘why’ and ‘how’ using correct physics principles. Link: Connect the idea to the main question or to the next point, for instance using ‘This leads to…’ or ‘Consequently…’.

Consider the moon weight example. Point: A person weighs less on the Moon. Evidence: The Moon’s gravitational field strength is about 1.6 N/kg, whereas Earth’s is 9.8 N/kg. Weight = mass × gravitational field strength (W = m g). Explanation: Since weight is directly proportional to g, a smaller g reduces weight for the same mass. Link: Therefore, the same astronaut feels much lighter on the Moon because the force of gravity is weaker.

6. Integrating Equations and Calculations |

Physics essays often require you to mention or use equations. Do not simply drop them in; weave them into your explanation. Centre a key equation and then interpret what each symbol means and how it relates to the scenario.

Eₖ = ½ m v²

For example, when explaining braking distance, you can write: ‘The kinetic energy of the car is given by Eₖ = ½ m v². This shows that kinetic energy depends on the square of the speed. Doubling the speed quadruples the energy that must be dissipated by the brakes, hence increasing braking distance.’

例如,解释刹车距离时,你可以写:‘The kinetic energy of the car is given by Eₖ = ½ m v². This shows that kinetic energy depends on the square of the speed. Doubling the speed quadruples the energy that must be dissipated by the brakes, hence increasing braking distance.’(汽车的动能由 Eₖ = ½ m v² 给出。

Another frequently used equation is work done: W = F s. You might connect it to friction work: ‘The work done by the friction force F over the braking distance s equals the initial kinetic energy: F s = ½ m v², which explains why a larger initial speed results in a disproportionately longer braking distance.’

你可以将其与摩擦力做功联系起来:‘The work done by the friction force F over the braking distance s equals the initial kinetic energy: F s = ½ m v², which explains why a larger initial speed results in a disproportionately longer braking distance.’(摩擦力 F 在刹车距离 s 上所做的功等于初始动能:F s = ½ m v²,这解释了为什么较大的初速度会导致不成比例地更长的刹车距离。)

7. Using Scientific Vocabulary |

Precise terminology elevates your answer. Instead of ‘push’ or ‘pull’, use ‘force’ or ‘resultant force’. Instead of ‘heat’, use ‘thermal energy’. Always distinguish between similar terms, e.g. speed and velocity (velocity has direction). The following table lists some connectives and phrases that improve coherence.

始终区分相似术语,例如 speed 和 velocity(velocity 有方向)。

English Connective Function
Therefore Shows logical consequence 因此
As a result Cause and effect 结果
This leads to Follow-on effect 这导致
Furthermore / Moreover Adds supporting point
However Introduces contrast 然而
For instance Gives an example 例如

Be consistent with units and symbols: use ‘N’ for newton, ‘kg’ for kilogram, ‘m/s’ for metres per second. Remember that in AQA exams, you are expected to use standard scientific conventions, which also contributes to QWC marks.

8. Concluding Your Essay |

A conclusion should summarise the main physics points without repeating them verbatim. It should directly answer the question and, if required, provide a judgement or evaluation. Start with phrases like ‘In conclusion…’, ‘To sum up…’, or ‘Overall…’.

用 ‘In conclusion…’(总之……)、‘To sum up…’(概括而言……)

For an evaluative question, weigh the evidence: ‘While factor A dominates at low speeds, factor B becomes more significant at high speeds. Therefore, the main factor affecting braking distance in icy conditions is…’. This shows higher-order thinking and secures top-band marks.

对于评估性问题,要权衡证据:‘While factor A dominates at low speeds, factor B becomes more significant at high speeds. Therefore, the main factor affecting braking distance in icy conditions is…’(虽然因素 A 在低速时占主导,但因素 B 在高速时变得更为显著。

9. Common Mistakes and Pitfalls |

One common error is writing everything you know about a topic without linking it to the question. Avoid ‘brain dumping’. Another is missing the explanation step – stating facts without saying why they matter. Also, avoid over-reliance on vague terms like ‘it gets bigger’ when you could say ‘the magnitude of the resultant force increases’.

同时,应避免过度依赖模糊用语,如 ‘it gets bigger’(它变大了),而应说 ‘the magnitude of the resultant force increases’(合力的大小增加)。

Keep your answer focused: if the question is about energy transfers, do not digress into wave properties. Also, double-check any calculations – a simple arithmetic slip can undermine an otherwise excellent essay because AQA mark schemes sometimes include marks for numerical accuracy.

10. Worked Example and Final Tips |

Question: ‘Explain why the braking distance of a car increases on an icy road.’ Let’s apply the template. Plan: (1) identify relevant factors – friction, kinetic energy, work done; (2) key equations – Eₖ = ½ m v² and W = F s; (3) explanation: ice reduces friction → smaller F → greater s for the same kinetic energy.

题目:‘Explain why the braking distance of a car increases on an icy road.’
