1. Business Activity and Enterprise |

A business is any organisation that provides goods or services to satisfy needs and wants. Goods are tangible items such as food or clothing, while services are intangible acts like haircuts or legal advice. Entrepreneurs spot gaps in the market and take risks to create new ventures.

The three main business sectors are primary (extracting raw materials), secondary (manufacturing) and tertiary (providing services). Most modern economies are heavily reliant on the tertiary sector. Enterprise benefits society by creating jobs, paying taxes and introducing innovation.

Characteristics of a successful entrepreneur include creativity, resilience, confidence and the willingness to take calculated risks. Problem‑solving ability and effective communication are equally important.

2. Business Ownership Structures |

Sole traders and partnerships are unincorporated businesses. A sole trader has full control but unlimited liability, meaning personal assets can be used to pay business debts. Partnerships share decision-making and workload, but each partner is liable for the actions of the others.

Private limited companies (Ltd) are incorporated and offer limited liability; shareholders’ personal assets are protected. However, shares cannot be sold to the general public. Public limited companies (PLC) can sell shares on the stock exchange, raising more capital, but face stricter regulation and the risk of takeover.

Other important forms include franchises (where a franchisor licenses a proven business model) and social enterprises, which prioritise social or environmental goals alongside profit.

Ownership type Liability Key advantage Key disadvantage
Sole trader Unlimited Full control, easy to set up Workload, difficulty raising finance
Partnership Unlimited Shared skills and capital Disputes, joint liability
Private Ltd Limited Protected personal assets Cannot sell shares publicly
Public Ltd Limited Access to stock market capital Loss of control, reporting costs

The table above summarises key features of four common ownership types. Choosing the right structure depends on the owner’s need for control, willingness to share profits and long‑term growth plans.

3. Business Aims, Objectives and Stakeholders |

Aims are the long‑term, overarching goals of a business, such as survival, growth or becoming the market leader. Objectives are specific, measurable targets that help a business achieve its aims. SMART objectives are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time‑bound.

Stakeholders are individuals or groups with an interest in the business. Internal stakeholders include owners, managers and employees; external stakeholders include customers, suppliers, lenders, the government and the local community. Stakeholder conflict often arises because different groups have different priorities – for example, shareholders want higher dividends while workers want higher wages.

High dividends to shareholders may mean less profit retained for business expansion. Similarly, paying staff higher wages can reduce the profit available for shareholder dividends. Balancing these competing interests is a major challenge for management.

4. Marketing and Market Research |

Marketing is about identifying customer needs and satisfying them profitably. Market research gathers information to reduce the risk of product failure. Primary research collects first‑hand data through surveys, questionnaires, interviews or focus groups. It is specific and up‑to‑date but time‑consuming and expensive.

Secondary research uses existing data from reports, government statistics, internet sources or market intelligence agencies. It is cheaper and quicker, but may be outdated or not perfectly suited to the business’s needs. Both types can be quantitative (numerical) or qualitative (opinions and motivations).

Market segmentation divides potential customers into groups based on age, income, lifestyle, location or behaviour. Targeting the right segment allows a business to tailor its marketing mix more effectively, increasing customer satisfaction and loyalty.

5. The Marketing Mix (4Ps) | 营销组合(4Ps)

The marketing mix consists of Product, Price, Place and Promotion. A successful mix must be coherent and aligned with target customer needs. Product design considers function, quality, branding and packaging. The product life cycle – introduction, growth, maturity, decline – helps businesses plan extension strategies.

Price can be set using cost‑plus (adding a markup to cost), competitive (matching rivals), penetration (low initial price to gain share) or skimming (high initial price for innovative products). The choice depends on the market position and business objectives.

Place refers to distribution channels – selling directly to consumers online, through retailers or via wholesalers. E‑commerce has greatly expanded the range of place decisions. Promotion covers advertising, sales promotions, public relations, sponsorship and social media. An integrated promotional campaign uses several methods consistently to reinforce the brand message.

6. Operations Management |

Operations management is about controlling the production process to ensure goods and services are delivered efficiently. Job production makes one‑off, customised items (e.g. wedding cakes). Batch production makes groups of identical items (e.g. bakery rolls). Flow (mass) production uses a continuous process for high‑volume, standardised goods.

Just‑in‑time (JIT) production aims to minimise stock holding by receiving materials only when needed. Benefits include lower storage costs and less waste, but the business is vulnerable to supply disruptions. Lean production techniques focus on reducing inefficiency at every stage.

Quality control checks products at the end of the line; quality assurance builds quality into every stage. Maintaining consistent quality reduces complaints and recalls, helping to protect the brand reputation.

7. People in Business (Human Resources) |

The human resources function recruits, trains and retains employees. Recruitment can be internal (promoting existing staff) or external (advertising to the public). A job description outlines duties, while a person specification sets out the attributes of the ideal candidate.

Training improves skills and productivity. Induction training helps new starters, on‑the‑job training is practical and immediate, while off‑the‑job training is more theoretical and often delivered by external experts. Well‑trained staff tend to be more motivated and make fewer errors.

Motivation can be financial (piece rate, commission, profit share) or non‑financial (praise, job enrichment, autonomy). Herzberg’s two‑factor theory distinguishes between hygiene factors (salary, working conditions) that prevent dissatisfaction and motivators (achievement, recognition) that encourage effort.

8. Sources of Finance |

Businesses need finance for startup costs, expansion, covering short‑term expenses or surviving a downturn. Internal sources include retained profit, sale of assets and working capital. Retained profit is the cheapest form of long‑term finance since there are no interest charges, but it may be limited.

External short‑term sources include overdrafts (flexible but high interest) and trade credit (buying materials now and paying later). External long‑term sources include bank loans, mortgages, issuing shares (for companies) and venture capital. Each involves a different trade‑off between control, cost and repayment obligation.

Choosing the right finance depends on the sum needed, the length of time and the willingness to give up ownership. For instance, a sole trader cannot issue shares, so may be more reliant on loans and retained profit.

9. Profit, Cash Flow and Break‑Even Analysis |

Profit is not the same as cash. A business can be profitable yet face a cash flow crisis if customers delay payment. Gross profit equals sales revenue minus cost of sales, while net profit further deducts expenses such as rent and salaries.

Gross Profit = Sales Revenue – Cost of Sales

Net Profit = Gross Profit – Expenses

A cash flow forecast lists all predicted cash inflows and outflows over a period. The net cash flow plus the opening balance gives the closing balance, which should never become negative. Regular monitoring helps avoid insolvency.

Break‑even analysis shows how many units must be sold to cover all costs. The break‑even point is reached when total revenue equals total costs. The formula uses the contribution per unit.

Break‑even point (units) = Fixed Costs ÷ (Selling Price per unit – Variable Cost per unit)

Margin of safety is the difference between actual output and the break‑even output; it shows how much sales can fall before the business starts losing money.

10. Business Growth and Integration |

Growth can be organic (internal) by opening new outlets, expanding product ranges or increasing market penetration. It is slower but lower risk. Inorganic growth happens through mergers or takeovers, enabling rapid expansion, access to new markets or economies of scale.

Integration can be horizontal (joining firms in the same industry and stage), vertical backward (taking over a supplier) or vertical forward (taking over a distributor). Conglomerate integration occurs when the businesses operate in completely different markets, spreading risk.

Economies of scale reduce the average cost per unit as output grows. Examples include purchasing bulk materials at a discount and spreading fixed costs over more units. However, businesses can also experience diseconomies of scale if communication breakdown and low morale result from excessive size.

11. External Influences on Business |

External factors are forces beyond a business’s control that affect its decisions. PESTLE analysis groups them into Political, Economic, Social, Technological, Legal and Environmental categories. Understanding these can help businesses anticipate change.

Economic influences include inflation, interest rates, unemployment and exchange rates. Rising interest rates increase borrowing costs and reduce consumer spending, while a strong pound makes exports more expensive. Social trends, such as increased demand for sustainability or flexible working, also shape business strategy.

Technology changes the way businesses operate, from e‑commerce platforms to automation in factories. Data‑protection regulations and consumer rights are important legal factors. Environmental pressure pushes companies to reduce carbon footprints and use ethical supply chains.

Globalisation brings both opportunities and threats: access to wider markets and cheaper supplies but also increased competition and exposure to international risks such as tariffs or supply‑chain disruptions.
