📚 GCSE Edexcel Chemistry: Chemical Reactions | GCSE Edexcel

Chemical reactions are at the heart of chemistry. In the Edexcel GCSE Chemistry course, you need to understand what happens when substances react, how to represent these changes using equations, and how to predict and explain the energy transfers that occur. This guide breaks down the key concepts, from conservation of mass and state symbols to exothermic and endothermic processes, reaction profiles, and the methods for investigating temperature changes. Mastering these fundamentals will help you tackle calculations, practical questions, and long-answer explanations with confidence.

1. Conservation of Mass |

In all chemical reactions, the total mass of the products equals the total mass of the reactants. No atoms are created or destroyed; they are simply rearranged to form new substances. This principle is known as the law of conservation of mass.

When a reaction is carried out in a closed system, no substances can enter or leave, so the measured mass remains constant. In an open system, a gas may escape or enter from the air, making it appear as though mass has changed. For example, when a metal reacts with oxygen, the mass of the solid product increases because oxygen from the air has combined with the metal. When a carbonate decomposes and carbon dioxide is released, the mass of the remaining solid decreases.

Balancing equations relies on this law. Every chemical equation must have the same number of each type of atom on both sides. You should be able to write balanced symbol equations for a range of reactions, including displacement, neutralisation, and combustion.

2. Word and Symbol Equations |

A word equation simply states the names of the reactants and products: for example, magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide. While easy to write, word equations do not show what is happening at the atomic level.

Symbol equations use chemical formulas to represent the substances involved. They must be balanced so that the number of each type of atom is the same on both sides. State symbols are added in parentheses to indicate whether a substance is solid (s), liquid (l), gas (g), or dissolved in water (aqueous, aq).

For example, the reaction of hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide is written as:

HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)

HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) → NaCl(aq) + H₂O(l)

When you write ionic equations you show only the particles that actually change. For the neutralisation above, the ionic equation is H⁺(aq) + OH⁻(aq) → H₂O(l). Spectator ions like Na⁺ and Cl⁻ are not included because they do not take part in the reaction.

3. State Symbols |

State symbols provide essential information about the physical state of each reactant and product under the conditions of the reaction. In Edexcel GCSE, you must use (s) for solid, (l) for liquid, (g) for gas, and (aq) for an aqueous solution.

Choosing the correct state symbol often depends on solubility or common sense. For instance, in a reaction between a metal and an acid, the salt produced is usually soluble and therefore (aq). In a precipitation reaction, one of the products is an insoluble solid, so it is marked (s).

When a substance is molten, it is a liquid, so (l) is used. However, if the substance is an ionic compound dissolved in water, (aq) is correct. Remember that water in its liquid form is always (l), while steam is (g).

4. Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions |

Chemical reactions involve energy transfers. An exothermic reaction releases energy to the surroundings, usually causing a rise in temperature. Combustion, neutralisation, and many oxidation reactions are exothermic. In an exothermic reaction, the energy of the products is lower than that of the reactants.

An endothermic reaction absorbs energy from the surroundings, typically making the temperature drop. Thermal decomposition and the reaction between citric acid and sodium hydrogencarbonate are common examples. In an endothermic reaction, the products have a higher energy content than the reactants.

These energy changes can be summarised by the overall energy change, ΔH. For an exothermic reaction, ΔH is negative; for an endothermic reaction, ΔH is positive. You do not need to calculate ΔH values at GCSE level, but you should be able to interpret energy level diagrams and reaction profiles.

5. Reaction Profiles |

A reaction profile is a diagram that shows the energy change during a chemical reaction. The vertical axis represents energy, and the horizontal axis shows the progress of the reaction from reactants to products.

For an exothermic reaction, the energy of the products is lower than that of the reactants, so the line drops overall. There is always an initial rise, however, which represents the activation energy – the minimum energy needed for particles to collide successfully and start the reaction.

For an endothermic reaction, the energy of the products is higher than that of the reactants, so the line rises overall. Again, an activation energy ‘hump’ is shown. Catalysts lower the activation energy, making the hump smaller on the diagram, but they do not change the overall energy difference between reactants and products.

You should be able to sketch these profiles and label the activation energy and the overall energy change clearly.

6. Bond Breaking and Bond Making |

During a chemical reaction, bonds in the reactants are broken and new bonds are formed to make the products. Bond breaking requires energy and is therefore endothermic. Bond making releases energy and is therefore exothermic.

If the energy released when new bonds form is greater than the energy needed to break the original bonds, the reaction is exothermic overall. If more energy is absorbed to break bonds than is released when new bonds form, the reaction is endothermic. This idea explains why some reactions heat their surroundings while others cool them down.

In the Edexcel specification, you may be asked to calculate the overall energy change using bond energies. This is done by subtracting the total energy released in bond making from the total energy absorbed in bond breaking.

ΔH = Sum of bond energies of bonds broken − Sum of bond energies of bonds formed

7. Investigating Temperature Changes |

You can measure the temperature change of a chemical reaction to determine whether it is exothermic or endothermic. A typical experiment uses a polystyrene cup placed in a beaker, a thermometer, and a known volume of one reactant. The initial temperature is recorded, the second reactant is added, and the mixture is stirred while the maximum or minimum temperature is noted.

For example, when investigating neutralisation, you can mix sodium hydroxide solution with hydrochloric acid and record the temperature rise. Plotting the temperature change against the volume of acid added allows you to find the point of complete neutralisation – the highest temperature.

Polystyrene cups are used because they are good thermal insulators, reducing heat loss to the environment and making the temperature change more accurate. A lid can also help minimise heat exchange with the surroundings.

8. Oxidation and Reduction |

Oxidation and reduction can be defined in terms of oxygen transfer. Oxidation is the gain of oxygen by a substance, while reduction is the loss of oxygen. For example, when copper oxide is heated with carbon, the carbon gains oxygen to form carbon dioxide (oxidation), and the copper oxide loses oxygen to form copper (reduction).

A redox reaction is one in which both oxidation and reduction occur. Another way to think about oxidation and reduction is by electron transfer – oxidation is the loss of electrons, reduction is the gain of electrons. The mnemonic OIL RIG is helpful: Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain (of electrons).

Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain。

Displacement reactions of metals are good examples of redox. A more reactive metal will displace a less reactive metal from its compound, and in the process the more reactive metal is oxidised (loses electrons) while the ions of the less reactive metal are reduced (gain electrons).

9. Types of Chemical Reactions |

Recognising common reaction types helps you predict products and write equations. Neutralisation is a reaction between an acid and a base to form a salt and water. The general equation is acid + base → salt + water. With a metal carbonate, the products are salt, water, and carbon dioxide.

Combustion is the burning of a fuel in oxygen, producing oxides. Complete combustion of hydrocarbons yields carbon dioxide and water. Incomplete combustion can produce carbon monoxide or carbon (soot). Displacement reactions occur when a more reactive element takes the place of a less reactive one in a compound, such as iron displacing copper from copper sulfate solution.

Thermal decomposition is the breakdown of a compound by heating. Many metal carbonates decompose to the metal oxide and carbon dioxide. For example, copper carbonate decomposes to copper oxide and carbon dioxide when heated strongly.

10. The pH Scale | pH 标度

The pH scale measures how acidic or alkaline a solution is. It ranges from 0 to 14, with 0 being strongly acidic, 7 neutral, and 14 strongly alkaline. Universal indicator or a pH probe can be used to measure pH; universal indicator changes colour across the whole range.

Acids produce hydrogen ions, H⁺(aq), in water. The higher the concentration of H⁺ ions, the lower the pH. Alkalis produce hydroxide ions, OH⁻(aq), in water. In neutralisation, H⁺ ions and OH⁻ ions react to form water, causing the pH to move toward 7.

Diluting an acid with water decreases the concentration of H⁺ ions, so the pH rises toward 7. Diluting an alkali lowers the concentration of OH⁻ ions, so the pH falls toward 7. The pH scale is logarithmic, so a change of one pH unit represents a tenfold change in H⁺ ion concentration.

11. Rates of Reaction |

The rate of a chemical reaction tells us how quickly reactants are turned into products. It can be measured by tracking the mass lost (if a gas is given off), the volume of gas produced, or the disappearance of a colour or precipitate.

Factors affecting the rate of reaction include temperature, concentration of solutions, pressure of gases, surface area of solids, and the presence of a catalyst. Increasing the temperature increases the kinetic energy of particles, leading to more frequent and more energetic collisions. Higher concentration or pressure means more particles in the same volume, so collisions are more frequent. A larger surface area exposes more particles to react, speeding up the reaction.

Catalysts provide an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy, increasing the rate without being used up. You should be able to interpret graphs showing how rate changes over time, and use collision theory to explain your observations.

12. Practical Skills for Chemical Reactions |

Edexcel GCSE required practicals involving chemical reactions include preparing a pure, dry sample of a soluble salt from an insoluble base or carbonate, and investigating temperature changes. For salt preparation, you need to use filtration and crystallisation: add excess solid to warm acid, filter off the unreacted solid, then evaporate the water gently to obtain crystals.

Edexcel GCSE

When measuring temperature changes, it is important to stir the mixture, use a precise thermometer, and record the maximum or minimum temperature reached. Repeats should be carried out to improve reliability, and anomalous results identified. A graph of temperature against volume added can be used to find the exact end point of a neutralisation reaction.

Understanding these techniques and being able to evaluate procedures — such as suggesting improvements to reduce heat loss or increase accuracy — is essential for exam success.
