1. What is Aggregate Supply? |

Aggregate supply (AS) is the total quantity of goods and services that all producers in an economy are willing and able to supply at a given overall price level over a particular time period.

It is a key macroeconomic concept because it shows the economy’s productive potential and responds to changes in costs, technology, and the quantity or quality of resources.

When we draw the AS curve, we put the general price level on the vertical axis and real GDP (national output) on the horizontal axis.

2. The Short‑Run Aggregate Supply (SRAS) Curve | 短期总供给(SRAS)曲线

The short‑run aggregate supply curve shows the relationship between the price level and the quantity of real output supplied, assuming at least one factor of production (usually wages) is fixed.

In the short run, the SRAS curve slopes upwards. This means that as the general price level rises, firms are willing to supply more goods and services because their profit margins improve when product prices increase faster than costs.

Price Level ↑ → Profit per unit ↑ → Output supplied ↑

However, if costs such as raw materials or energy rise, the whole SRAS curve can shift to the left, even if the price level stays the same.

3. Factors Shifting the SRAS Curve | 导致 SRAS 曲线移动的因素

Several factors can cause the short‑run aggregate supply curve to shift, mostly linked to changes in the costs of production that firms face.

Changes in raw material and energy prices: A rise in the global price of oil increases production and transport costs, reducing SRAS (leftward shift). A fall in commodity prices has the opposite effect.

Changes in exchange rates: A depreciation of the domestic currency makes imported inputs more expensive, raising costs and shifting SRAS to the left. An appreciation makes imports cheaper, shifting SRAS to the right.

Changes in indirect taxes and subsidies: An increase in VAT or excise duties raises firms’ costs, shifting SRAS left. A subsidy lowers costs and shifts SRAS right.

You can remember these as ‘C‑E‑T’ – Costs of inputs, Exchange rate, and Taxation & subsidies.

4. The Long‑Run Aggregate Supply (LRAS) Curve – Classical View | 长期总供给(LRAS)曲线——古典观点

In the long run, all factors of production are variable, and the economy is assumed to operate at its full employment level of output. The classical LRAS curve is therefore vertical.

This vertical line is drawn at the economy’s potential output – the maximum sustainable output when all resources are used efficiently. It is independent of the price level.

If the price level rises or falls, the real output supplied does not change in the long run because wages and other costs eventually adjust to match the new price level.

LRAS is vertical at YFE (full employment output)

LRAS 在 YFE(充分就业产出)处为垂直线

5. Factors Shifting the LRAS Curve | 导致 LRAS 曲线移动的因素

Anything that increases the quantity or quality of an economy’s factors of production will shift the long‑run aggregate supply curve to the right, representing economic growth.

Technological advances: Improved technology raises productivity, allowing more output from the same inputs. LRAS shifts right.

Improvements in education and training: A more skilled workforce is more productive, increasing the quality of labour and shifting LRAS right.

Changes in productivity: Any factor that raises output per worker or per hour worked (e.g. better management, R&D) boosts LRAS.

Demographic changes and migration: An increase in the size of the labour force, perhaps through immigration or a higher birth rate, expands the quantity of labour and shifts LRAS right.

Government regulation and competition policy: Reducing unnecessary red tape or promoting competition can improve efficiency and shift LRAS right. Over‑regulation can shift it left.

Discovery of new resources: Finding new oil fields or mineral deposits increases the quantity of natural resources and shifts LRAS right.

6. Distinction Between Short‑Run and Long‑Run AS | 短期与长期总供给的区别

It is crucial for exams to understand the difference between short‑run and long‑run aggregate supply, both in terms of diagram shape and the underlying assumptions.

Feature (特征) SRAS (短期) LRAS – Classical (长期古典)
Shape of curve (曲线形状) Upward sloping (向上倾斜) Vertical (垂直)
Assumption about factor prices (要素价格假设) At least one factor price fixed, e.g. wages are ‘sticky’ (至少一种要素价格固定,如工资黏性) All factor prices fully flexible (所有要素价格完全灵活)
Relationship with price level (与价格水平的关系) Higher price level → higher output (较高价格水平 → 较高产出) Output independent of price level (产出与价格水平无关)
Position (位置) Can shift due to cost changes (可因成本变化而移动) Fixed at full‑employment output; shifts when productive capacity changes (固定在充分就业产出;当生产能力变化时移动)
Time horizon (时间范围) Short run – some inputs fixed (短期——部分投入固定) Long run – all inputs variable (长期——所有投入可变)

In exam answers, always specify which curve you are referring to because the policy implications differ: stimulating AD can raise output in the short run but only increases the price level in the long run when the economy is at full capacity.

7. Diagram Drawing Tips for AS Curves | AS 曲线绘图技巧

Accurate diagrams are a great way to gain marks in GCSE Economics. Follow these steps for clear and correct graphs.

For SRAS: label vertical axis ‘Price Level’, horizontal axis ‘Real GDP’. Draw an upward‑sloping line and label it SRAS. Add a second SRAS line (SRAS1) shifted to the left or right to show a change, and label the direction with an arrow.

For LRAS: draw a vertical line at a specific level of Real GDP, label it ‘YFE‘ for full employment output. Label the vertical line LRAS. If illustrating a shift, draw a new vertical line to the right and label it LRAS1, showing economic growth.

Always use a ruler for straight lines and add a brief note beneath the diagram explaining the shift you have shown.

8. Common Exam Questions and How to Tackle Them | 常见考题及应对方法

Typical GCSE questions on aggregate supply include ‘Explain one factor that could cause the SRAS curve to shift to the left’ or ‘Analyse the impact of an increase in immigration on a country’s LRAS’.

For short explain questions (2‑4 marks), give a clear definition, identify the factor, state the direction of shift, and provide a real‑world example if possible.

For ‘Analyse’ questions (6 marks), you must develop a logical chain of reasoning. For example: ‘Technological progress in manufacturing → higher labour productivity → lower unit costs → firms can produce more at any given price → LRAS shifts right → real GDP can increase without inflationary pressure.’

Evaluation points may include recognising that the size of the shift depends on how widely the technology is adopted, or that supply‑side improvements often take time to materialise.

9. Real‑World Examples to Support Your Answers |

Using real‑world examples makes your answers stand out. Here are a few you can memorise for the exam.

SRAS shift due to energy prices: The sharp rise in oil and natural gas prices in 2021‑2022 caused a significant leftward shift in the SRAS of many European economies, contributing to ‘cost‑push’ inflation.

LRAS shift from immigration: The UK’s open labour market for EU workers before Brexit increased the size of the workforce, shifting the UK’s LRAS to the right and enabling higher non‑inflationary growth.

Technological LRAS shift: Widespread adoption of AI and automation in manufacturing is currently shifting the LRAS of developed countries to the right by boosting productivity.

Always link your example back to the specific factor given in the question to show real understanding.

10. Quick Recap and Final Exam Advice |

Remember the core distinctions: SRAS slopes up because some costs are fixed, LRAS (classical) is vertical at full employment output. SRAS shifts when costs change; LRAS shifts when productive potential changes.

Label your graphs carefully, explain shifts using specific factors from the Edexcel specification, and always consider the time horizon – short‑run or long‑run – to demonstrate high‑level analysis.

With clear definitions, accurate diagrams, logical chains of reasoning, and well‑chosen examples, you can build strong answers that hit the top bands of the mark scheme.
