1. Types of Waves | 波的种类

Waves are disturbances that transfer energy from one place to another without transferring matter. There are two main types: transverse and longitudinal waves.

波是扰动,可将能量从一个地方传递到另一个地方而不传递物质。主要有两种类型:横波和纵波。

In a transverse wave, the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Examples include light, water ripples, and all electromagnetic waves.

In a longitudinal wave, the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer, consisting of compressions and rarefactions. Sound waves and seismic P-waves are longitudinal.

You must be able to identify a transverse wave by the peaks (crests) and troughs, and a longitudinal wave by areas where particles are bunched together (compressions) and spread apart (rarefactions).

2. Describing Wave Properties | 描述波的性质

The amplitude of a wave is the maximum displacement of a point on the wave from its rest position. It is related to the energy carried by the wave – greater amplitude means more energy.

振幅是波上某点偏离平衡位置的最大位移。它与波携带的能量有关——振幅越大,能量越大。

Wavelength (λ) is the distance between two corresponding points on consecutive waves, for example from crest to crest or compression to compression. It is measured in metres (m).

Frequency (f) is the number of complete waves passing a point per second, measured in hertz (Hz). One hertz is one wave per second. Period (T) is the time for one complete wave to pass a point, and is the reciprocal of frequency: T = 1/f.

Wave speed (v) is how fast the wave travels, dependent on the medium. It is commonly measured in metres per second (m/s).

You should be able to label these quantities on a diagram of a transverse wave or a longitudinal wave representation.

3. The Wave Equation | 波动方程

The relationship between wave speed, frequency, and wavelength is given by the wave equation:

v = f × λ

where v = wave speed (m/s), f = frequency (Hz), λ = wavelength (m).

This equation can be rearranged to find any unknown quantity: f = v / λ and λ = v / f. Always ensure units are consistent before substituting into the formula.
