1. Animal Cell Structure |

Animal cells are eukaryotic, meaning they contain a true nucleus surrounded by a membrane. The nucleus stores genetic information on chromosomes made of DNA, which controls all cellular activities.

The cytoplasm is a jelly-like fluid where most metabolic reactions occur. It suspends organelles such as mitochondria, ribosomes, and vesicles. Mitochondria are the sites of aerobic respiration, releasing energy in the form of ATP.

Ribosomes synthesise proteins by translating genetic instructions. The cell membrane, a partially permeable barrier, controls the movement of substances through diffusion, osmosis and active transport. Animal cells lack a rigid cell wall, chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole, which distinguishes them from plant cells.

2. Classification of Animals |

Animals are divided into two main groups: vertebrates (with a backbone) and invertebrates (without a backbone). Vertebrates are further classified into five classes: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish.

Mammals have hair or fur, give birth to live young (except monotremes), and feed milk from mammary glands. They are endothermic and have a four-chambered heart. Birds possess feathers, a beak, and lay hard-shelled eggs; they are also endothermic with highly efficient lungs and air sacs.

Reptiles have dry, scaly skin and lay soft-shelled eggs on land. They are ectothermic, relying on the environment to regulate body temperature. Amphibians have moist, permeable skin and typically begin life in water with gills, later developing lungs. Fish are aquatic, have gills for gas exchange, and possess fins for movement; they are also ectothermic.

Invertebrates include arthropods (insects, crustaceans, arachnids), molluscs, annelids and many other phyla. Arthropods have a chitinous exoskeleton and segmented bodies, while molluscs often possess a soft body and a muscular foot.

3. Digestive System and Enzymes |

The mammalian digestive system breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble ones that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. Mechanical digestion begins in the mouth with chewing, while chemical digestion involves enzymes.

Amylase, produced in the salivary glands and pancreas, hydrolyses starch into maltose and simpler sugars. Proteases, such as pepsin in the stomach and trypsin from the pancreas, break down proteins into amino acids. Lipases, also from the pancreas, digest fats into fatty acids and glycerol, aided by bile from the liver which emulsifies fats.

The stomach churns food and secretes hydrochloric acid, creating an acidic environment optimal for pepsin. In the small intestine, villi and microvilli greatly increase the surface area for absorption. Digested nutrients pass into the blood or lymph, while water and minerals are absorbed mainly in the large intestine.

4. Circulatory System |

Mammals have a closed, double circulatory system consisting of the heart, blood vessels and blood. The double circulation means blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit: the pulmonary circuit to the lungs and the systemic circuit to the rest of the body.

The heart has four chambers: right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium and left ventricle. Deoxygenated blood from the body enters the right atrium, is pumped to the right ventricle, and then to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. Oxygenated blood returns via the pulmonary vein to the left atrium, moves to the left ventricle, and is pumped out through the aorta to the body.

Arteries carry blood away from the heart under high pressure; they have thick, elastic walls. Capillaries are tiny vessels with walls one cell thick, allowing efficient exchange of materials. Veins return blood to the heart under low pressure and contain valves to prevent backflow.

Blood is composed of plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Red blood cells contain haemoglobin, which binds oxygen for transport. White blood cells defend against infection, and platelets aid clotting.

5. Respiratory System and Gas Exchange |

The human respiratory system includes the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles and alveoli. Air reaches the alveoli, where oxygen diffuses into the blood and carbon dioxide diffuses out to be exhaled.

Alveoli are adapted for gas exchange by having extremely thin walls (single cell thickness), a large total surface area, a moist lining for gas dissolution, and a dense network of capillaries maintaining steep concentration gradients.

Aerobic respiration in cells releases energy from glucose and can be summarised by the equation:

C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O (+ energy)

Anaerobic respiration in animals occurs when oxygen is insufficient, producing lactic acid and much less energy: Glucose → Lactic acid (+ small amount of energy). Lactic acid build-up causes muscle fatigue and must be oxidised later by repaying an oxygen debt.

6. Nervous System and Homeostasis |

The nervous system enables rapid communication between different parts of the body. It is made up of the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord) and the peripheral nervous system (nerves extending to organs and limbs).

Neurones transmit electrical impulses. A reflex arc allows rapid, involuntary responses to stimuli: a receptor detects a stimulus, an impulse travels along a sensory neurone to the spinal cord, where it passes through a relay neurone and then to a motor neurone, which stimulates an effector (muscle or gland).

Synapses are junctions between neurones where chemicals (neurotransmitters) diffuse across a gap to transmit the signal. Homeostasis refers to maintaining a stable internal environment. The nervous system and hormones work together to regulate body temperature, blood glucose, water balance and more.

Thermoregulation involves the skin: when the body is too hot, sweat glands secrete sweat and capillaries near the skin surface dilate (vasodilation); when cold, muscles shiver to generate heat and capillaries constrict (vasoconstriction) to reduce heat loss.

7. Hormonal Control |

Hormones are chemical messengers produced by endocrine glands, travelling in the blood to target organs where they trigger specific, slower responses compared to nerve impulses.

Insulin and glucagon regulate blood glucose levels. When blood glucose rises after a meal, the pancreas releases insulin, which promotes the conversion of glucose to glycogen in the liver and uptake by cells. When blood glucose drops, the pancreas secretes glucagon, stimulating the liver to convert glycogen back into glucose.

Adrenaline is secreted by the adrenal glands in times of stress or excitement. It increases heart rate, dilates air passages and boosts blood flow to muscles, preparing the body for ‘fight or flight’.

Thyroxine from the thyroid gland controls metabolic rate, and its release is regulated by a negative feedback loop involving the pituitary gland. Negative feedback ensures that a rise in a hormone’s effect inhibits its further release, maintaining balance.

8. Reproduction | 生殖

Most animals reproduce sexually, involving the fusion of male and female gametes (sperm and egg) to form a zygote. This process increases genetic variation, which is vital for survival and evolution.

In mammals, the male reproductive system produces sperm in the testes and delivers them through the penis. The female reproductive system produces eggs in the ovaries, and fertilisation typically occurs in the oviduct (fallopian tube). The fertilised egg implants in the uterus, where the embryo develops, nourished by the placenta.

Hormones control the menstrual cycle: oestrogen thickens the uterine lining, LH triggers ovulation, and progesterone maintains the lining. If no fertilisation occurs, progesterone levels drop, ending the cycle.

Some invertebrates and a few vertebrates can reproduce asexually, for example by budding or parthenogenesis, producing genetically identical offspring. However, for GCSE, the focus is on sexual reproduction in mammals and the role of gametes.

9. Evolution and Natural Selection |

Evolution is the change in heritable characteristics of a population over time. Charles Darwin proposed the theory of natural selection, often summarised as ‘survival of the fittest’.

Natural selection occurs because there is genetic variation within a population. Individuals with characteristics better suited to the environment are more likely to survive, reproduce and pass on their advantageous alleles. Over generations, these alleles become more common, leading to adaptation and possibly speciation.

Evidence for evolution includes fossil records, comparative anatomy, and DNA analysis. Darwin’s finches on the Galapagos Islands, with beak shapes adapted to different food sources, provide a classic example of adaptive radiation.

Resistance to antibiotics in bacteria and pesticide resistance in insects are rapid, observable examples of natural selection. A mutation conferring resistance enables those individuals to survive and reproduce, quickly spreading the resistance allele through the population.

10. Adaptations and Ecosystems |

Adaptations are features that improve an organism’s chance of survival and reproduction. They can be structural (physical traits), behavioural (actions), or physiological (internal chemical processes).

For example, a camel has long eyelashes and nostrils that can close to keep out sand (structural), stores fat in its hump to provide metabolic water (physiological), and is active mainly at dawn and dusk to avoid heat (behavioural). Polar bears have thick fur and a layer of blubber for insulation, and white fur for camouflage.

Ecosystems describe the interactions between organisms and their environment. Food chains show the transfer of energy from producers (plants) to primary consumers (herbivores) to secondary consumers (carnivores) and so on. Arrows represent the direction of energy flow.

Energy is lost at each trophic level through respiration, waste and uneaten parts, which is why food chains rarely exceed four or five links. Understanding predator–prey cycles and interdependence is essential for appreciating biodiversity and conservation.
