📚 IGCSE AQA Physics: Interference of Light – Key Points | IGCSE AQA
Light interference is one of the most elegant demonstrations of the wave nature of light. When two sets of light waves overlap under the right conditions, they produce a pattern of alternating bright and dark fringes. This article breaks down the essential knowledge you need for the IGCSE AQA Physics exam, from coherent sources to the double‑slit equation.
1. What is Interference? |
Interference occurs when two waves overlap in space. If the waves are in phase at a point, they combine to increase amplitude – this is constructive interference. If they are completely out of phase, they cancel each other – destructive interference. With light, constructive interference produces a bright fringe, while destructive interference gives a dark fringe.
2. Conditions for Interference |
To observe a stable interference pattern, the two light sources must be coherent. This means they must emit waves with the same frequency and a constant phase difference. Ordinary light bulbs do not produce interference because their atoms emit light randomly. Only a coherent source, such as a laser, or a single source split into two paths, can create observable fringes.
3. Coherent Sources |
A laser is the most convenient coherent source. It produces monochromatic light of a single wavelength, with all waves in step. In Young’s experiment, coherence is achieved by passing light through a narrow single slit before it reaches the double slits. The single slit acts as a point source, ensuring that the waves reaching the two double slits are in phase.
4. Young’s Double‑Slit Experiment |
The classic demonstration of light interference uses two narrow parallel slits, a screen, and a coherent light source. Light passing through the two slits spreads out by diffraction and overlaps on the screen. Where the wavefronts meet, interference occurs. You see a series of equally spaced bright and dark bands – the interference fringes.
5. Understanding the Interference Pattern |
The bright fringes are maxima (constructive interference) and the dark fringes are minima (destructive interference). The central bright fringe is the brightest and is called the zero‑order maximum. The first bright fringes on either side are the first‑order maxima, then second‑order, and so on. The pattern is symmetrical and the fringe spacing is constant if the slits are narrow enough.
6. Constructive and Destructive Interference (Path Difference) |
Whether a point on the screen is bright or dark depends on the path difference from the two slits. If the path difference is a whole number of wavelengths (0, λ, 2λ, 3λ…), the waves arrive in phase and constructive interference occurs. If the path difference is an odd half‑wavelength (λ/2, 3λ/2, 5λ/2…), the waves arrive out of phase and destructive interference occurs.
- Constructive interference: path difference = nλ, where n = 0, 1, 2, …
- Destructive interference: path difference = (n + ½)λ
7. The Double‑Slit Equation: λ = ax / D | 双缝干涉方程:λ = ax / D
The geometry of the apparatus leads to the key formula: λ = ax / D, where λ is the wavelength, a is the slit separation (distance between the two slits), x is the fringe spacing (distance between adjacent bright or dark fringes), and D is the distance from the slits to the screen. This equation is given on the data sheet, but you must understand what each symbol represents and when it applies.
λ = a x / D
The approximation is valid only when D is very large compared with a and x, and when the slits are narrow.
8. Measuring Light Wavelength Experimentally |
You can measure the wavelength of a laser using a double‑slit, a screen and a ruler. Measure D with a metre ruler, a with a travelling microscope or by using the information provided, and x by measuring the distance across several fringes and dividing by the number of gaps. Then use λ = ax / D. Repeating measurements and using a large number of fringes reduces uncertainty.
|---|---|---|
| Slit separation 双缝间距 | a | Travelling microscope or given 移测显微镜或已知数据 |
| Fringe spacing 条纹间距 | x | Ruler (measure over many fringes) 尺子(测多个条纹后平均) |
| Slit‑to‑screen distance 缝屏距离 | D | Metre ruler 米尺 |
9. Effect of Changing Parameters |
Increasing the slit separation a decreases the fringe spacing x, because the waves have to travel further apart to interfere constructively. Moving the screen further away (increasing D) increases x. Using a longer wavelength λ also increases x – red light gives wider fringes than blue light. These relationships are all embedded in λ = ax / D.
10. Interference vs. Diffraction |
Students often confuse interference and diffraction. Diffraction is the spreading of waves when they pass through a gap or around an obstacle. Interference is the superposition of waves from two or more sources. In Young’s experiment, diffraction at each slit is what allows the light to overlap, and then interference produces the fringe pattern. So both effects occur, but the pattern is an interference pattern.
11. Applications of Interference |
Interference is not only a lab curiosity. It is used in anti‑reflection coatings on glasses and camera lenses (destructive interference cancels reflected light), in interferometers for precise distance measurement, and in testing the flatness of surfaces. In astronomy, interference between signals from separate telescopes improves resolution.
12. Common Exam Mistakes and Tips |
- Confusing a (slit separation) with slit width. The equation uses a as the distance between the centres of the two slits, not the width of each slit.
- 混淆 a(双缝间距)与缝宽。
- Forgetting to measure x across multiple fringes and then dividing. Always divide the total width by the number of fringe spacings, not by the number of bright fringes.
- Using the wrong path difference condition. For destructive interference, the path difference is (n + ½)λ, not nλ.
- Not quoting units. Wavelength should be in metres (often nm given, convert to m).
- Drawing the fringe pattern with decreasing intensity away from centre – actually, the bright fringes are all roughly equal in intensity when using a laser.
