📚 IGCSE AQA Science: Key Concept Comparisons | IGCSE AQA

In IGCSE AQA Science, many topics involve closely related concepts that students often confuse. Mastering the differences is crucial for accurate answers. This article compares key pairs of ideas from Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, highlighting their distinct features and related examples.

1. Animal Cells vs Plant Cells |

Animal cells are generally irregular in shape and lack a cell wall, while plant cells have a fixed, rectangular shape due to a rigid cellulose cell wall.

Plant cells contain chloroplasts for photosynthesis; animal cells never have chloroplasts.

Most plant cells have a large, permanent central vacuole containing cell sap, whereas animal cells may have small, temporary vacuoles.

Both cell types share features like a nucleus, cytoplasm, cell membrane, mitochondria and ribosomes.

2. Aerobic vs Anaerobic Respiration |

Aerobic respiration uses oxygen to completely break down glucose, releasing a large amount of energy. Anaerobic respiration occurs without oxygen and produces less energy.

glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (+ energy)

glucose → lactic acid (+ energy)

glucose → ethanol + carbon dioxide (+ energy)

Aerobic respiration takes place in mitochondria and is the preferred pathway for most organisms. Anaerobic respiration occurs in the cytoplasm when oxygen is insufficient, leading to an oxygen debt in muscles.

3. Diffusion vs Osmosis vs Active Transport |

Diffusion is the net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to lower concentration down a concentration gradient; it is passive and requires no energy.

Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules through a partially permeable membrane from a dilute solution to a more concentrated solution, down a water potential gradient.

Active transport moves substances against their concentration gradient, from lower to higher concentration, using carrier proteins and energy from ATP.

Examples: oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange by diffusion; water uptake in plant roots by osmosis; mineral ion uptake into root hair cells by active transport.

4. Exothermic vs Endothermic Reactions |

Exothermic reactions transfer energy to the surroundings, usually as heat, causing a temperature rise. Examples include combustion, respiration, and neutralisation.
