📚 IGCSE Edexcel Biology: Common Mistakes Explained | IGCSE Edexcel

IGCSE Edexcel Biology requires not only factual recall but also the ability to apply concepts to unfamiliar situations. Many students lose marks by confusing similar processes or misinterpreting data. This article highlights the most common tricky questions and pinpoints where errors occur, helping you revise smarter and achieve higher grades.

IGCSE Edexcel

1. Diffusion, Osmosis and Active Transport |

A frequent mistake is stating that osmosis is the movement of any molecule through a partially permeable membrane. In fact, osmosis refers specifically to the net movement of water molecules from a region of higher water potential to a region of lower water potential across a partially permeable membrane.

Another common error is claiming that osmosis requires energy. Osmosis is a passive process that does not require ATP; it occurs because of the random motion of water molecules. Only active transport uses energy to move substances against the concentration gradient.

When answering a question such as “Explain why a plant cell becomes turgid in pure water,” do not mention active transport. The correct explanation involves water entering by osmosis, the vacuole swelling and pushing the cytoplasm against the cell wall, but the cell does not burst because the cell wall is strong and inelastic.

Common mistake example: A student wrote: “Osmosis is the diffusion of glucose from high to low concentration.” Feedback: The student confused osmosis with diffusion. Always specify water molecules and a partially permeable membrane.

2. Enzyme Action and Denaturation |

Students often describe denaturation as the death of an enzyme. Enzymes are proteins and are not alive; they can be denatured when their active site loses its specific shape. Denaturation is permanent and caused by extreme pH or high temperature.

A common exam mistake is stating that the rate of enzyme reaction continues to increase as temperature rises beyond the optimum. In reality, the rate decreases sharply because the enzyme denatures. Be careful to distinguish between increasing kinetic energy (which increases rate) and permanent shape change (which stops the reaction).

For pH, many students fail to mention that extreme pH alters the ionic charges on the active site, breaking the bonds that hold the tertiary structure. Use the term “denature” specifically.

Model answer snippet: “The active site is no longer complementary to the substrate, so the substrate cannot bind and the reaction cannot take place.”

3. Digestive System: pH and Enzyme Specificity | 消化系统:pH 与酶的专一性

IGCSE learners frequently claim that pepsin works best in the small intestine. Pepsin is a protease secreted in the stomach where the pH
