IGCSE OCR Biology: The Nervous System |

📚 IGCSE OCR Biology: The Nervous System |

The nervous system is a rapid communication network that allows organisms to detect changes in their environment (stimuli) and coordinate appropriate responses. It is made up of specialised cells called neurones that transmit electrical impulses. In IGCSE OCR Biology, you need to understand the structure and function of the human nervous system, from the receptors that pick up stimuli to the effectors that bring about responses. You must also be able to describe reflex arcs, synaptic transmission, and the differences between voluntary and reflex actions. This guide covers all the essential points with clear explanations and exam-focused tips.

1. Organisation of the Nervous System |

The human nervous system is divided into the central nervous system (CNS), which consists of the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system (PNS), which is made up of nerves connecting the CNS to the rest of the body. The CNS processes information and coordinates responses, while the PNS transmits signals to and from the CNS. Sensory neurones carry impulses from receptors to the CNS, and motor neurones carry impulses from the CNS to effectors such as muscles and glands.

2. Receptors and Effectors |

Receptors are specialised cells or structures that detect stimuli. Stimuli can be changes in light, temperature, pressure, sound, or chemicals. Common receptors include the retina of the eye (light), temperature receptors in the skin, and chemoreceptors in the tongue and nose. Receptors generate an electrical impulse when stimulated. Effectors are the muscles or glands that bring about a response. Muscles contract to cause movement, while glands secrete hormones or other substances.

A stimulus is first picked up by a specific receptor. The impulse then travels along a sensory neurone to the CNS. After processing, a motor neurone carries the impulse to an effector. This sequence – stimulus → receptor → sensory neurone → CNS → motor neurone → effector → response – is fundamental.

3. Neurones: Structure and Types |

Neurones (nerve cells) are highly specialised for transmitting electrical impulses quickly and over long distances. A typical neurone has a cell body containing the nucleus, and two types of extensions: dendrites, which receive impulses from other neurones or receptors, and an axon, which carries impulses away from the cell body towards other neurones or effectors. Many axons are insulated by a fatty myelin sheath, which speeds up impulse conduction.

There are three main types of neurone in the reflex pathway: sensory neurones, which have long dendrites and carry impulses from receptors to the CNS; relay (intermediate) neurones, found entirely within the CNS, which connect sensory and motor neurones; and motor neurones, which have long axons and carry impulses from the CNS to effectors. You should be able to draw and label a simple diagram of each type, clearly showing the direction of impulse travel.

4. The Reflex Arc |

A reflex action is an automatic, rapid, and involuntary response to a stimulus that does not involve conscious thought. The pathway of neurones involved in a reflex is called a reflex arc. It bypasses the brain’s conscious areas, instead going through the spinal cord or unconscious brain regions, which makes it very fast and protective. Examples include pulling your hand away from a hot object (withdrawal reflex) and the knee-jerk reflex.

The sequence of a spinal reflex arc: receptor in the skin detects a painful stimulus → sensory neurone carries impulse to the spinal cord → relay neurone in the spinal cord passes the impulse on → motor neurone carries impulse from the spinal cord to a muscle → the muscle (effector) contracts and moves the body part away. In some reflexes, a branch of the sensory neurone goes directly to the brain so you become aware of the pain afterwards.

Exam tip: label diagrams of the reflex arc clearly, including the spinal cord (grey matter and white matter), dorsal root, ventral root, and the three neurones. The synapse between neurones is a key structure.

5. Synapses and Neurotransmitters |

A synapse is a tiny gap between two neurones. When an electrical impulse arrives at the end of the presynaptic neurone, it triggers the release of chemical substances called neurotransmitters from synaptic vesicles. These neurotransmitters diffuse across the synaptic cleft and bind to specific receptor molecules on the postsynaptic membrane. This binding generates a new electrical impulse in the next neurone.

Synapses ensure that impulses travel in only one direction, because only the presynatic neurone releases neurotransmitters and only the postsynaptic membrane has receptors. They also allow a single impulse to be transmitted to multiple neurones, and can amplify or filter signals. Many drugs and toxins affect synaptic transmission, for example by blocking receptors or preventing neurotransmitter breakdown.

AQA/OCR key point: Know the structure of a synapse, including synaptic cleft, vesicles, and neurotransmitter (acetylcholine as an example). Also understand that the impulse is chemical across the synapse, not electrical.

6. The Central Nervous System in Detail |

The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain is protected by the skull and is the control centre for complex behaviours, memory, and conscious thought. The spinal cord runs inside the vertebral column. It transmits impulses between the brain and the rest of the body, and also coordinates many reflex actions independently of the brain. In cross-section, the spinal cord has a central H-shaped region of grey matter (containing cell bodies of relay and motor neurones) surrounded by white matter (containing myelinated axons).

In the brain, different regions have specific functions, but for IGCSE you mainly need to recognise that the cerebral cortex is involved in conscious activities, the cerebellum coordinates balance and muscle activity, and the medulla (brain stem) controls automatic functions like breathing and heart rate. However, the detailed structure of the brain is more relevant to A Level.

7. The Peripheral Nervous System |

The PNS comprises all nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It is divided into the sensory (afferent) division, which carries impulses from receptors to the CNS, and the motor (efferent) division, which carries impulses from the CNS to effectors. The motor division is further subdivided into the somatic nervous system, controlling voluntary skeletal muscle movements, and the autonomic nervous system, controlling involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and gland secretions.

The autonomic nervous system consists of two opposing branches: the sympathetic system, which prepares the body for ‘fight or flight’ (increasing heart rate, dilating pupils), and the parasympathetic system, which promotes ‘rest and digest’ activities (slowing heart rate, stimulating digestion). These systems use the same neurotransmitter (acetylcholine or noradrenaline) at different synapses to achieve their effects.

8. Comparing Nervous and Hormonal Control |

Feature (特征) Nervous System (神经系统) Hormonal (Endocrine) System (激素/内分泌系统)
Form of signal (信号形式) Electrical impulses (electrical) Chemical messengers (hormones in blood)
Pathway (途径) Specific neurone pathways Bloodstream – broadcast to all cells
Speed (速度) Very fast (up to 100 m/s) Slower (seconds to minutes)
Duration of effect (效应持续时间) Short-lived (stops when stimulus stops) Longer-lasting (may persist)
Target (目标) Specific muscles, glands, or other neurones Cells with specific receptor proteins
Function (功能) Rapid, precise responses (e.g. reflexes) Long-term regulation (e.g. growth, metabolism)

For the exam, you should be able to compare and contrast the two systems, giving advantages of each: the nervous system is fast and targeted, while the hormonal system is slower but can have widespread and sustained effects. Both systems often work together to maintain homeostasis, for example in the control of blood glucose or body temperature.

9. The Eye: A Sensory Receptor Example |

The eye contains photoreceptors (rods and cones) in the retina that detect light. In dim light, the pupil dilates; in bright light, it constricts. This is a reflex controlled by muscles in the iris (circular and radial muscles). The lens focuses light onto the retina by changing shape (accommodation), controlled by ciliary muscles and suspensory ligaments. For distant objects, the ciliary muscles relax, the suspensory ligaments tighten, and the lens becomes thinner. For near objects, the opposite occurs.

This is a common topic in the OCR specification. Remember: the optic nerve carries impulses from the retina to the brain. The blind spot has no photoreceptors. The fovea has the highest concentration of cones for colour vision.

10. Common Mistakes and Exam Tips |

Students often confuse the terms stimulus, receptor, and effector. A stimulus is the change in environment; a receptor detects the stimulus; and the effector produces the response. Another common error is mixing up the order of neurones in a reflex arc: it always goes sensory → relay (in CNS) → motor. Remember that the synapse transmits the signal chemically, not electrically, so it is slower than transmission along an axon.

When labelling diagrams, pay attention to the dorsal root (with the dorsal root ganglion containing sensory neurone cell bodies) and the ventral root (motor neurone). Use arrows to indicate the direction of impulse. In essays, always link structure to function, e.g. “myelin sheath insulates the axon, speeding up impulse transmission” or “synapses ensure unidirectional flow of information”.

Practise past paper questions on reflex arcs, synapses, and the comparison of nervous and hormonal control. Be ready to interpret data on reaction times or effects of drugs on synapses.
