📚 IGCSE OCR Physics: Comparison of Key Concepts | IGCSE OCR

In IGCSE OCR Physics, many fundamental ideas come in closely related pairs. Being able to compare and contrast these concepts – from scalars and vectors to series and parallel circuits – is essential for answering exam questions accurately and building a deep understanding of physical principles. This article walks through the key comparisons that appear throughout the OCR specification, giving clear English and Chinese explanations side by side.

1. Scalar vs Vector |

A scalar quantity is fully described by its magnitude (size) alone. The direction does not matter. Common examples in physics include distance, speed, mass, time and temperature.

A vector quantity has both magnitude and direction. Without specifying the direction, the description is incomplete. Examples are displacement, velocity, acceleration, force and momentum.

When adding scalars, ordinary arithmetic is used. Two masses of 3 kg and 4 kg simply add to 7 kg. Vectors, however, must be added using geometry or the tip‑to‑tail method because their directions affect the resultant.

2. Distance vs Displacement |

Distance is the total length of the path travelled by an object. It is a scalar quantity and cannot be negative. In a long‑jump run‑up followed by a foul, an athlete may cover a large distance.

Displacement is the straight‑line separation between the start and end points, together with its direction. It is a vector. If a runner completes one full lap on a 400 m track, the distance is 400 m but the displacement is zero.

In a graph of motion, distance can only increase with time, whereas displacement can increase, decrease or become negative depending on the direction taken.

3. Speed vs Velocity |

Speed is the rate of change of distance. It is a scalar, calculated as speed = distance ÷ time. The speedometer of a car displays instantaneous speed, with no information about direction.

Velocity is the rate of change of displacement. It is a vector, given by velocity = displacement ÷ time. A car driving around a roundabout at constant speed still has a changing velocity because its direction changes.

Average speed and average velocity for a journey can be very different. An object that returns to its starting point has an average velocity of zero, but its average speed is positive.

4. Mass vs Weight |

Mass measures the amount of matter in an object. It is a scalar, measured in kilograms (kg) with a balance, and it stays the same everywhere in the universe.

Weight is the gravitational force acting on a mass. It is a vector that points toward the centre of the planet, measured in newtons (N) using a spring balance or force meter.

The relationship between weight and mass is:

W = m × g

W = m × g

where g is the gravitational field strength. On Earth g ≈ 9.8 N/kg, so a 1 kg mass has a weight of about 9.8 N. On the Moon g is about 1.6 N/kg, so the mass stays 1 kg but the weight drops to about 1.6 N.

5. Series vs Parallel Circuits |

In a series circuit, components are connected one after another in a single loop. The current is the same at every point. If one lamp fails, the circuit is broken and all lamps go out.

In a parallel circuit, components are connected on separate branches. The current from the source splits at a junction, with the sum of the branch currents equalling the main current. If one branch breaks, the other branches still work.

For potential difference: in series, the supply voltage is shared across components. In parallel, each branch gets the full supply voltage.

Resistance behaviour also differs. For two resistors in series:

R = R₁ + R₂

R = R₁ + R₂

For two resistors in parallel:

1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

1/R = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

6. Direct Current vs Alternating Current |

Direct current (DC) flows in one fixed direction. The voltage across a DC source is constant. Batteries and solar cells produce DC, making it the standard for portable electronics.

Alternating current (AC) periodically reverses its direction and changes its magnitude. In the UK, mains electricity supplies AC at 230 V with a frequency of 50 Hz, meaning the current changes direction 100 times per second.

On an oscilloscope trace, DC appears as a straight horizontal line, while AC shows a wave pattern, typically a sine wave. AC can be transformed to different voltages using a transformer, which is crucial for efficient long‑distance power transmission.

7. Transverse vs Longitudinal Waves |

In a transverse wave, the oscillations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer. Examples include light, water ripples and all electromagnetic waves. Transverse waves can travel through a vacuum.

In a longitudinal wave, the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer. They consist of compressions and rarefactions. Sound waves in air and seismic P‑waves are longitudinal. Longitudinal waves require a medium.

The wavelength and frequency of both wave types follow the wave equation:

v = f × λ

v = f × λ

However, particle motion is completely different: transverse waves have crests and troughs, while longitudinal waves show regions of high and low pressure.

8. Conduction vs Convection vs Radiation |

Conduction is the transfer of thermal energy through a solid (or between touching objects) without any bulk movement of the material. It occurs mainly by lattice vibrations and free‑electron diffusion. Metals are excellent conductors; non‑metals and gases are insulators.

Convection occurs in fluids (liquids and gases). Warmer, less dense fluid rises, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a convection current. Convection is responsible for sea breezes, central‑heating circulation and mantle movement.

Radiation transfers energy by electromagnetic waves, mostly infrared. It does not require any particles and can travel through a vacuum. All objects emit and absorb thermal radiation; hot, dark, matt surfaces are the best emitters and absorbers, while shiny, light surfaces are poor at both.

9. Reflection vs Refraction |

Reflection occurs when a wave bounces off a surface. The law of reflection states that the angle of incidence equals the angle of reflection (∠i = ∠r), measured from the normal. The incident ray, reflected ray and normal all lie in the same plane.

Refraction happens when a wave passes from one medium into another at an angle, causing a change in speed and direction. If light enters a denser medium (for example from air to glass), it slows down and bends toward the normal.

Snell’s law links the angles of incidence and refraction with the refractive index n:

n = sin i / sin r

n = sin i / sin r

Total internal reflection can occur when light travels from a denser to a less dense medium and the angle of incidence exceeds the critical angle.

10. Nuclear Fission vs Nuclear Fusion |

Nuclear fission is the splitting of a large, unstable nucleus (such as uranium‑235 or plutonium‑239) into two smaller daughter nuclei after absorbing a neutron. This process releases a huge amount of energy along with two or three more neutrons, which can trigger a chain reaction.

Nuclear fusion is the joining together of two light nuclei (for example hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium) to form a heavier nucleus (such as helium). Fusion releases even more energy than fission per unit mass, but it requires extremely high temperature and pressure to overcome electrostatic repulsion.

Fission is used in nuclear power stations with controlled chain reactions, while the main challenge for fusion power is sustaining the extreme conditions long enough to produce a net energy gain. Fusion is the energy source of stars, including the Sun.
