📚 A-Level Mathematics Mechanics: Common Mistakes Summary | A-Level

Mechanics is a challenging part of A-Level Mathematics where many students lose marks due to small but critical errors. This article summarises the most frequent pitfalls in mechanics, covering vectors, equations of motion, forces, momentum, energy and more. Identifying these common mistakes will help you avoid unnecessary mark loss and strengthen your problem-solving skills for the exam.

1. Confusing Vectors and Scalars |

Many candidates use speed where velocity is required, or distance where displacement is needed. For example, average velocity is displacement divided by time, not total distance divided by time. If a particle returns to its starting point, the average velocity is zero, but the average speed is positive. Remember that velocity, acceleration, displacement and force are vectors with both magnitude and direction. Always assign a positive direction and treat signs consistently.

Another typical error is ignoring the vector nature of momentum. In collisions, you must account for direction when applying conservation of momentum. A ball rebounding with speed 4 m/s after approaching at 5 m/s has a velocity change of 9 m/s, not 1 m/s, if you set the initial direction as positive.

2. Ignoring Direction When Using SUVAT |

The five constant-acceleration equations (SUVAT) apply only when acceleration is uniform and motion is in a straight line. A very common mistake is failing to assign a positive direction and then substituting all quantities as positive. For vertical motion under gravity, a student might write v = u + 9.8t even when the initial velocity is upward. Correct usage demands that if upward is positive, then acceleration due to gravity is -9.8 m/s².

Also, displacement s in SUVAT is a vector: it is the change in position from start to finish. If a particle goes up and then down below the start point, s is negative. Always check the sign of s, u, v and a before substituting values into the equations.

3. Misusing F = ma on Slopes | 在斜面上误用 F = ma

Resolving forces on an inclined plane is a major source of error. Many students wrongly take the component of weight parallel to the slope as mg cos θ instead of mg sin θ. Always draw a clear force diagram showing weight vertically downwards, then resolve into two perpendicular components: one along the plane (mg sin θ) and one normal to the plane (mg cos θ). The angle θ used in these components is the angle of inclination of the slope to the horizontal.

In a typical problem, you then apply Newton’s second law along the slope: resultant force = ma. If friction is present, its direction opposes relative motion and has magnitude F ≤ μR, where R is the normal reaction. A common slip is to forget that R is not simply mg but mg cos θ (plus any additional perpendicular forces).

4. Friction Direction and Limiting Friction Confusion |

Friction always opposes relative motion or the tendency of motion, but students often blindly draw it opposite to the direction of travel. On a slope, if a particle is sliding down, friction acts up the slope—that is straightforward. But when an object is being pulled up a slope or when a driving force acts on a car’s wheels, the direction of friction can be counterintuitive. Always identify the direction in which the surface would slip if there were no friction, then draw friction in the opposite direction.

Regarding the formula F = μR: it gives the maximum possible static friction or the kinetic friction when sliding occurs. Many candidates incorrectly assume that friction must equal μR in all situations. If a block on a rough horizontal plane is pushed with a small force, friction will match that force up to the limit μR. Only when the object is on the point of moving or is sliding does F = μR apply.

5. Tension in Connected Particles and Pulley Systems |

In A-Level mechanics, strings are modelled as light and inextensible, so tension is the same at both ends of a taut string. However, many exam scripts show errors like writing one tension for one mass and a different tension for the other in a simple pulley system, or forgetting to apply Newton’s second law separately to each particle. The correct approach is to isolate each particle, draw a force diagram showing weight, tension, normal reaction etc., and write F = ma for each in the direction of motion.

Another mistake arises when a string passes over a smooth pulley: the tension is unchanged, but its direction changes. Students may keep the direction wrong while writing component equations, especially when one mass is on an inclined plane. Always treat each particle separately and assign consistent positive direction of acceleration for the whole system.

6. Momentum and Impulse: Vector Nature Frequently Overlooked |

Momentum is a vector, defined as mass × velocity. Impulse is the change in momentum, I = mv – mu, and is also a vector. In problems involving rebounds or collisions, it is essential to define a positive direction and consistently assign signs to velocities. A classic error is to write m(v – u) without considering sign changes: for a ball hitting a wall at 3 m/s and rebounding at 2 m/s, the impulse magnitude is m(2 – (-3)) = 5m, not m(2 – 3) = -m, if the initial direction is positive.

The principle of conservation of momentum applies in a closed system with no external forces. When writing the momentum conservation equation, include the signs of velocities. For an explosion or a collision, two objects moving in opposite directions will have velocities of opposite signs. Many candidates forget to give one of the velocities a negative value.

7. Incorrect Perpendicular Distance in Moments |

The moment of a force about a point equals force × perpendicular distance from the point to the line of action of the force. Students often mistakenly use the length of a rod or the direct distance between the point and the point of application, rather than the perpendicular distance. If a force acts at an angle, you must resolve the force into components or find the lever arm using d sin θ or d cos θ.

For a system in equilibrium, the total clockwise moment equals the total anticlockwise moment about any pivot. Errors occur when students do not clearly distinguish clockwise from anticlockwise and sum moments with mixed signs. Always decide on a sign convention (e.g., clockwise moments as positive) and apply it consistently. Also, do not forget to include reaction forces and weight acting at the centre of mass when a uniform rod is involved.

8. Energy Conservation: Forgetting Work Done Against Friction |

The work-energy principle states that the change in total mechanical energy equals the work done by non-conservative forces, such as friction and air resistance. A widespread mistake is writing “loss in GPE = gain in KE” for a rough slope, completely ignoring the energy dissipated as heat. The correct equation should be: initial energy + work done by driving forces = final energy + work done against resistance, or the equivalent form: change in KE + change in GPE = work done by non-conservative forces.

When using conservation of energy, always identify the system, the initial and final positions, and all work done by external forces. Calculate work done against friction as frictional force × distance moved along the surface. Remember to use the coefficient of friction to find the frictional force only when the normal reaction is correctly determined.

9. Misinterpreting Motion Graphs |

Displacement-time, velocity-time and acceleration-time graphs are common in mechanics questions. A frequent error is confusing the gradient of a displacement-time graph (which gives velocity) with the gradient of a velocity-time graph (which gives acceleration). If a displacement-time graph is curved, the gradient changes, indicating changing velocity, but students may incorrectly say that the acceleration is the gradient of the curve (it is actually the second derivative). The area under a velocity-time graph gives displacement, not distance, unless the graph is all positive.

Another point: when a velocity-time graph goes below the t-axis, the area represents negative displacement. To find total distance travelled, you must split the area into sections above and below the axis and sum their absolute values. Mixing up displacement and distance in graph interpretation is a classic mistake.

10. Unit and Conversion Inconsistencies |

Mechanics problems require strict use of SI units: metres for displacement, kilograms for mass, seconds for time, newtons for force, metres per second for velocity, etc. A common pitfall is mixing units, such as using speeds in km/h directly in SUVAT equations without converting to m/s. Divide km/h by 3.6 to get m/s. Similarly, distances given in centimetres or kilometres must be converted to metres, and masses in grams must become kilograms before applying F = ma.

In energy calculations, make sure the unit of energy is joules (1 J = 1 N m). Using mass in grams will give energy in millijoules or incorrect values, leading to incorrect final answers. Always check that every quantity is expressed in consistent base and derived units before starting calculations.

11. Misapplying Newton’s Third Law in Connected Bodies |

Newton’s third law states that forces between two interacting objects are equal in magnitude and opposite in direction. However, when analysing forces on a single particle, students sometimes include the reaction force of that particle on another object in the same free-body diagram. For example, when a block sits on a table, the normal reaction from the table on the block acts on the block; the downward force the block exerts on the table is not shown on the block’s force diagram. Including both will lead to double counting or an incorrect net force equation.

A related error occurs with tension in a tow bar or string: the tension pulls backward on the towing vehicle and forward on the trailed object. Some candidates include both forces on the same vehicle incorrectly. The correct method is to treat each object in isolation and only consider forces that act directly on that object.

12. Forgetting to Read the Question Carefully and Define Variables |

Many marks are lost simply because students do not read the question fully. They confuse ‘at rest’ with ‘in equilibrium’, or miss the phrase ‘smooth’ (no friction) or ‘light’ (massless). Another common error is not drawing a diagram or labelling forces clearly. Always sketch a clear diagram, define your positive direction, and list the given quantities with their signs before writing equations.

Students also forget to define variables they introduce. If you use T for tension, state it. If you denote acceleration as a, indicate its direction. Examiners appreciate a clear logical structure. Finally, check whether the answer should be given in a specific unit or form, such as to a certain number of significant figures, and whether you have answered the actual question asked (e.g., find speed, not velocity, or find distance, not displacement).
