Comparative advantage is one of the most fundamental concepts in international trade theory. Using a table can make the calculation clearer. Suppose Country A and Country B can produce computers and wheat as follows per worker per day:

4. Determining Comparative Advantage Step by Step | 逐步确定比较优势

Step one: calculate the opportunity cost of each good in each country. Step two: compare opportunity costs; the country with the lower opportunity cost for a good has the comparative advantage in that good.

Consider a revised example: Country X produces either 20 units of cloth or 10 units of wine per worker. Country Y produces either 15 units of cloth or 15 units of wine.

If each country specialises according to its comparative advantage, total world output increases. In the example above, before specialisation, assume each country splits its labour equally. Total cloth and wine output would be lower compared to a scenario where X produces only cloth and Y produces only wine.
