Economics Year 1 Graph Analysis |

📚 Economics Year 1 Graph Analysis |

In your first year of Economics, graph analysis is more than just drawing lines on a grid. It is the primary tool you will use to explain, predict, and evaluate economic behaviour. From demand and supply diagrams to cost curves and AD-AS models, mastering graph analysis allows you to demonstrate a deep understanding of how markets and economies function. This article will walk you through the essential graphs every Year 1 student must be able to draw, interpret, and apply in exam-style questions.

1. The Role and Importance of Graph Analysis |

Economic models are simplified representations of reality. Graphs provide a visual language that enables economists to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely. In Year 1, you are expected not only to label axes correctly but also to manipulate curves, annotate shifts, and link graphical movements to real-world events. A well-drawn, accurately explained diagram can often be the difference between a middle-grade and a top-grade answer.

Graphs help you visualise theoretical relationships such as ‘ceteris paribus’, the law of diminishing marginal utility, or the multiplier effect. They also allow you to test what happens when an external factor changes. Always remember that a graph without explanation is incomplete; examiners look for your ability to tell the story behind the lines.

2. Key Types of Graphs in Year 1 Economics |

The Year 1 syllabus revolves around two broad areas: microeconomics and macroeconomics. In micro, you will need to master the standard demand and supply diagram, elasticity graphs, consumer and producer surplus, price control diagrams, and cost and revenue curves for firms. In macro, the central diagram is the Aggregate Demand/Aggregate Supply (AD-AS) model, alongside the circular flow of income and the Production Possibility Frontier (PPF).

Each type of graph has its own conventions for labelling, slopes, and intersections. Getting these details right is crucial for building a solid foundation. This article covers the most important ones that repeatedly appear in assessments.

3. The Demand Curve |

The demand curve illustrates the inverse relationship between the price of a good and the quantity demanded, assuming ceteris paribus. It slopes downwards from left to right, reflecting the law of demand. When you draw a demand curve, the price is always on the vertical axis (P) and quantity on the horizontal axis (Q). A movement along the demand curve occurs only when the good’s own price changes. A shift of the whole curve to the right (increase in demand) or left (decrease in demand) is caused by non-price determinants such as income, tastes, prices of related goods, or expectations.

Key labels to include are the original demand curve D₁ and the new curve D₂. A typical exam question might ask you to show the effect of rising incomes on the market for normal goods: you would shift the demand curve rightwards, resulting in a higher equilibrium price and quantity later on.

4. The Supply Curve |

The supply curve shows the positive relationship between price and quantity supplied. It typically slopes upwards because higher prices give producers an incentive to supply more. As with demand, a change in the good’s own price causes a movement along the supply curve. A shift of the entire supply curve is triggered by changes in production costs, technology, taxes, subsidies, or weather conditions for agricultural products.

When drawing a shift, use an arrow to indicate direction and clearly mark S₁ and S₂. In supply-side shocks, such as an increase in the cost of raw materials, the supply curve shifts to the left (decrease in supply), which raises the equilibrium price and lowers quantity.

5. Market Equilibrium |

Market equilibrium occurs where the demand and supply curves intersect. At this point, the quantity demanded equals the quantity supplied, and there is no tendency for the price to change. The equilibrium price (Pₑ) and equilibrium quantity (Qₑ) are the core reference points in any graph analysis. When the market is not in equilibrium, either excess demand (shortage) or excess supply (surplus) exists.

To illustrate a shortage, show a price below equilibrium (e.g., P₁ < Pₑ) and shade the horizontal gap between demand and supply at that price. Label it 'Excess Demand'. For a surplus, set a price above equilibrium and shade the excess supply gap. These diagrams are fundamental to understanding why prices tend to adjust towards equilibrium in free markets.

6. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) Diagrams |

Price elasticity of demand measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a change in price. The formula for PED is:

PED = %Δ Quantity Demanded / %Δ Price

PED = 需求量变化的百分比 / 价格变化的百分比

Economists use PED to classify demand curves. While the numerical values are important, graph analysis requires you to sketch curves with different slopes to illustrate elasticity. A flatter demand curve indicates relatively elastic demand (PED > 1), while a steeper curve indicates relatively inelastic demand (PED < 1). A perfectly elastic demand curve is horizontal, and perfectly inelastic demand is vertical.

The table below summarises the relationship between PED values and graph shapes:

PED Value Elasticity Type Graph Shape
PED > 1 Relatively elastic Shallow slope
PED < 1 Relatively inelastic Steep slope
PED = ∞ Perfectly elastic Horizontal line
PED = 0 Perfectly inelastic Vertical line
PED = 1 Unitary elastic Rectangular hyperbola

PED = ∞ 完全弹性 水平线
PED = 0 完全无弹性 垂直线
PED = 1 单位弹性 直角双曲线

7. Consumer and Producer Surplus |

Consumer surplus is the difference between what consumers are willing to pay and what they actually pay. On a graph, it is the area below the demand curve and above the market price, up to the quantity traded. Producer surplus is the difference between the price producers receive and the minimum price they would accept; it is the area above the supply curve and below the market price.

In a competitive equilibrium, total welfare is the sum of consumer and producer surplus. Graph analysis questions often ask you to show how a tax, subsidy, or price control affects these areas. Shading the new surplus areas clearly and highlighting the deadweight loss (DWL) is essential for gaining full marks. Use different shading patterns or clearly labelled areas like A, B, C to demonstrate changes in welfare.

8. Government Intervention: Maximum and Minimum Prices |

Price controls are a staple of Year 1 graph analysis. A maximum price (price ceiling) is set below the equilibrium price to make goods more affordable, such as rent controls or food price caps. Graphically, you draw a horizontal line at the ceiling price. At this price, quantity demanded exceeds quantity supplied, creating a shortage. Highlight the shortage gap and explain the potential for black markets or rationing.

A minimum price (price floor) is set above equilibrium to protect producers, as with agricultural support schemes or minimum wages. You draw a horizontal line above equilibrium, leading to quantity supplied exceeding quantity demanded, creating a surplus. Often the government must purchase the excess supply to maintain the floor. Label the surplus and discuss government expenditure implications.

9. Costs and Revenues: The Firm’s Diagram |

In Year 1 microeconomics, you encounter the firm’s cost and revenue curves. The typical diagram includes Average Total Cost (ATC), Average Variable Cost (AVC), Marginal Cost (MC), and the revenue lines. Under perfect competition, the firm is a price taker, so the demand curve (AR = MR) is horizontal at the market price. The profit-maximising output is where MC = MR. You must show the level of output Q* and the area of supernormal profit or loss.

利润最大化产量在MC = MR处。

If price exceeds ATC at Q*, the firm makes a supernormal profit, shown as the rectangular area between price and ATC. If price is below ATC but above AVC, the firm minimises losses in the short run. Drawing the MC curve cutting ATC and AVC at their minimum points is crucial; marks are lost if these intersections are inaccurate. Use diagram to explain shutdown point: where price falls below AVC.

10. Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply (AD-AS) | 总需求与总供给

The AD-AS model is the central macroeconomic graph for Year 1. The AD curve shows the total planned expenditure on goods and services at different price levels. It slopes downwards due to the real balance effect, interest rate effect, and international trade effect. The AS curve can be drawn as a short-run upward-sloping curve (SRAS) or the classical long-run vertical curve (LRAS) at the full-employment level of output Yf.

Equilibrium occurs where AD = SRAS. Shifts in AD (due to consumption, investment, government spending, or net exports) and shifts in SRAS (due to input costs, productivity, or supply shocks) are common exam analysis points. For instance, an increase in government spending shifts AD right, raising real GDP and the price level. If SRAS shifts left due to rising oil prices, you get stagflation: lower output and higher price level. Always annotate the new equilibrium levels Y₁ and P₁.

均衡出现在AD = SRAS处。

11. The Production Possibility Frontier (PPF) |

The PPF is a microeconomic graph that illustrates scarcity, choice, and opportunity cost. It shows the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce with given resources and technology. Points on the curve are efficient, points inside represent underemployment, and points outside are unattainable. A rightward shift of the PPF signals economic growth, caused by an increase in quantity or quality of resources or technological advancement.

Graph analysis may involve a bowed-out (concave) PPF, reflecting increasing opportunity cost. You might be asked to show the opportunity cost of producing more of one good by moving along the curve. For example, moving from point A to point B involves sacrificing a certain amount of Good Y to gain more Good X. Clearly illustrate this trade-off with arrows and labels.

12. Tax Incidence and Subsidy Diagrams |

When an indirect tax is imposed on a good, the supply curve shifts vertically upwards by the amount of the tax. The new equilibrium price paid by consumers (Pc) is higher than the price received by producers (Pp), and the difference is the tax wedge. The tax burden is shared between consumers and producers, depending on the relative elasticities of demand and supply. The graph must show the new consumer and producer prices, the tax revenue rectangle (or square), and the deadweight loss triangle.

A subsidy has the opposite effect: the supply curve shifts vertically downwards by the subsidy amount, leading to a lower consumer price and a higher effective price for producers. The subsidy cost to the government is the area of the subsidy per unit multiplied by the new quantity. Analyse the burden of subsidy and the welfare loss similarly. Precision in drawing parallel shifts and shading the correct areas is key.
