📚 GCSE Biology: The Nervous System Revision Guide | GCSE

The nervous system acts as the body’s high-speed communication network, enabling organisms to detect stimuli and coordinate immediate responses. For GCSE Biology, you need to understand how nerve cells (neurones) are structured, how they transmit electrical signals, and how reflex arcs bypass conscious thought to protect the body. This revision guide breaks down every key concept, from synaptic transmission to the practical investigations that often appear in exams.

1. Overview: Detecting and Responding to Stimuli |

All living organisms must sense and react to changes in their environment to survive. A stimulus is any detectable change in the internal or external environment, such as light, sound, temperature, pressure or chemical composition. Specialised receptors detect specific stimuli and convert them into electrical impulses. The nervous system then transmits these impulses to the central nervous system (CNS), where decisions are made, and finally to effectors (muscles or glands) that bring about a response.

This sequence – stimulus, receptor, coordinator, effector, response – is the fundamental pathway for any nervous reaction. In GCSE questions, you are often asked to identify these components from a given scenario, such as touching a hot object or seeing a predator. Remember that receptors are specific: rod cells in the eye detect light intensity, Pacinian corpuscles in the skin detect pressure, and chemoreceptors detect chemicals.

2. Components of the Nervous System: CNS and PNS |

The human nervous system is divided into two main parts. The central nervous system (CNS) consists of the brain and spinal cord. This is the processing centre where information is integrated, stored and used to initiate responses. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is made up of all the nerves that branch out from the CNS to the rest of the body. These nerves carry sensory information towards the CNS and motor commands away from the CNS.

In the PNS, sensory neurones transmit impulses from receptors to the CNS, while motor neurones carry impulses from the CNS to effectors. This separation is crucial for understanding reflex arcs and diseases that damage specific nerve types. When you label diagrams in an exam, always check whether a neurone is carrying information towards or away from the spinal cord.

3. Types of Neurones: Sensory, Relay and Motor |

GCSE Biology typically focuses on three types of neurone. Sensory neurones have a long dendron carrying impulses from a receptor to the cell body, and a shorter axon leading into the CNS. Motor neurones have a short dendrite and a very long axon that transmits impulses from the CNS to an effector. Relay neurones (also called interneurones or connector neurones) are found entirely within the CNS and connect sensory neurones to motor neurones.

Each type of neurone has a slightly different structure adapted to its function. Sensory neurones’ cell bodies are located in a ganglion just outside the spinal cord, while motor neurone cell bodies lie inside the grey matter of the spinal cord. Understanding these locations helps you interpret cross-sections in the exam. Relay neurones are the most abundant neurones in the brain and spinal cord, enabling complex processing.

4. Anatomy of a Neurone |

Despite their differences, all neurones share common features. The cell body contains the nucleus and cytoplasm, where most metabolic activity occurs. Branching fibres called dendrons (and finer dendrites) receive impulses from other neurones and carry them towards the cell body. The axon is a single long fibre that conducts impulses away from the cell body. Many axons are surrounded by a fatty myelin sheath that insulates the fibre and speeds up impulse transmission.

At the end of the axon are synaptic terminals or boutons, which form connections with the next neurone or effector. The myelin sheath is formed by Schwann cells in the PNS; gaps between Schwann cells are called nodes of Ranvier. In myelinated neurones, the action potential jumps from node to node (saltatory conduction), greatly increasing speed. GCSE students should know that myelin acts like the plastic coating on electrical wire, preventing signal loss and cross-talk.

5. How Nerve Impulses Travel |

A nerve impulse is a brief change in the electrical potential across the neurone membrane caused by the movement of ions. At GCSE level, it is enough to understand that the impulse is an electrical signal that travels rapidly along the neurone from the dendrites to the axon terminals. The impulse is all-or-nothing: once triggered at the receptor or at the synapse, it travels the full length of the neurone without losing strength.

Myelinated neurones conduct impulses much faster than unmyelinated ones because of saltatory conduction. This is why areas of the nervous system that control rapid reflexes, such as the withdrawal reflex, rely on thick, heavily myelinated axons. Exam questions may ask you to explain why coordination is faster in one pathway compared with another; always mention myelin insulation and node-to-node jumping.

6. The Synapse: A Chemical Junction |

Neurones do not touch each other directly. The tiny gap between the synaptic terminal of one neurone and the dendrite of the next is called a synapse. When an electrical impulse reaches the presynaptic terminal, it causes vesicles filled with neurotransmitter to fuse with the membrane and release their contents into the synaptic cleft. The neurotransmitter molecules diffuse across the gap and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane.

Impulse arrives → Vesicles release neurotransmitter → Neurotransmitter diffuses across cleft → Binds to receptors → New impulse generated in postsynaptic neurone

This chemical transmission ensures impulses travel in one direction only, because receptors are only present on the postsynaptic membrane. Synapses also integrate information: a single postsynaptic neurone may receive inputs from many presynaptic neurones, adding up excitatory and inhibitory signals before deciding whether to fire an impulse. In the GCSE, you may be asked to explain how drugs or toxins (e.g., organophosphates) interfere with the breakdown or recycling of neurotransmitters.

7. The Reflex Arc: A Rapid, Automatic Response |

A reflex is an automatic, involuntary response to a stimulus that does not involve the conscious brain. This allows the body to react extremely quickly to avoid danger. The pathway taken by the nerve impulse during a reflex is called the reflex arc. In its simplest form, the reflex arc involves a receptor, a sensory neurone, a relay neurone in the spinal cord, a motor neurone and an effector.

A classic example is the withdrawal reflex: when you touch a hot surface, thermoreceptors in the skin generate impulses that travel along a sensory neurone to the spinal cord. There, the sensory neurone synapses directly with a relay neurone, which in turn activates a motor neurone causing the biceps muscle to contract and pull the hand away. The response occurs before the brain registers the pain, explaining why you jerk your hand back before you consciously feel the heat.

8. Sequences and Labels in the Reflex Arc |

Exam papers frequently ask you to put the stages of a reflex arc in the correct order or to label a diagram. Mastering the sequence below is essential:

Stimulus → Receptor → Sensory Neurone → Relay Neurone (in spinal cord/CNS) → Motor Neurone → Effector (muscle/gland) → Response

Note that the relay neurone is entirely within the grey matter of the spinal cord or brain. The synapse between the sensory and relay neurone is the point where drugs or diseases might interfere. The whole arc bypasses the cerebral cortex, although signals are sent to the brain afterwards to make you aware of the event. Reflex arcs are also protective: the iris reflex adjusts pupil size, and the knee-jerk reflex helps maintain posture.

9. Investigating Reaction Time: The Ruler Drop Test |

A required practical in many GCSE specifications investigates the time it takes for a person to respond to a stimulus. The simplest method is the ruler drop test. One person holds a ruler vertically between the thumb and forefinger of the participant, who positions their hand open at the zero mark. Without warning, the ruler is released, and the participant catches it as quickly as possible. The distance the ruler falls before being caught is recorded and converted into reaction time using an equation.

You must identify the independent variable (what you change, e.g., using the dominant hand vs. non-dominant hand, or the effect of exercise/caffeine), the dependent variable (reaction distance or calculated time), and control variables (same ruler, same starting position, no warning, same environment). Repeating the test multiple times and discarding anomalous results improves accuracy. You may be asked to evaluate the method: the ruler test is simple but relies on the person’s concentration; a computer-based test would be more precise.

10. The Brain: Structure and Function |

The brain is part of the CNS and controls complex behaviour. At GCSE, you need to know the functions of three main regions. The cerebral cortex (or cerebrum) is the large, folded outer layer responsible for consciousness, intelligence, memory, language and voluntary movement. The cerebellum, at the back, coordinates muscle activity and balance. The medulla oblongata (often just ‘medulla’) in the brain stem controls automatic activities such as heart rate and breathing.

Neuroscientists study the brain using techniques such as MRI scans, which show brain structure and activity without surgery. Historically, studying patients with brain damage (e.g., Phineas Gage) revealed the functions of specific areas. Exam questions might ask why it is difficult to treat brain diseases: the brain is encased in the skull, the tissues are delicate, and many drugs cannot cross the blood-brain barrier.

11. Common Confusions and Exam Tips |

Many students confuse the roles of sensory and motor neurones. Always think of the direction: Sensory (Receptor to CNS), Motor (CNS to Effector). Another common mistake is believing that all responses involve the brain; in reflexes, the spinal cord or brain stem acts as the coordinator, not the cerebral cortex. Also, do not state that impulses jump across the synapse – the signal is chemical, not electrical, at the synapse.

When describing the reflex arc, use the precise sequence and name the effector correctly (e.g., biceps muscle, not just ‘arm’). In practical
