Understanding the types of questions that appear on the OCR GCSE Business papers is just as important as knowing the subject content. This article breaks down the most common question formats, from simple ‘State’ and multiple choice items to challenging 6‑mark and 9‑mark essays, and shows you exactly what examiners are looking for in each case. By studying these worked examples and the thinking behind them, you can build a clear picture of how to earn full marks.

1. Understanding Command Words |

Every question on the OCR Business paper uses a command word that tells you the depth and style of answer required. Misreading ‘State’ as ‘Explain’ or ‘Discuss’ as ‘Justify’ is one of the most frequent reasons for lost marks. Spend a minute underlining the command word before you start writing.

Command Word What it asks for 指令词 要求
State / Identify Give a brief fact or name with no explanation.
Explain Show cause and effect by linking a reason to a consequence.
Calculate Work out a numerical answer, often showing workings.
Analyse / Discuss Identify impacts or arguments, often with advantages and disadvantages, linked to the business context.
Justify / Recommend Make a supported choice between options, giving reasons why one is better and why the alternative is rejected.

2. Multiple Choice Questions | 选择题

Multiple choice questions (MCQs) are worth 1 mark each and appear at the start of Paper 1 and Paper 2. The key skill is eliminating obviously wrong answers first. For example:

Which of the following is an internal source of finance?
A. Bank loan
B. Overdraft
C. Retained profit
D. Trade credit

Recognise that ‘internal’ means money generated from within the business. Options A, B and D are all external sources, so the correct answer is C. Always read all four options before marking your choice — sometimes a plausible distractor can catch you out if you rush.

3. Two-Mark ‘State’ Questions |

A typical 2‑mark question will ask you to ‘State’ or ‘State and explain briefly’ two separate points. No development is needed — just a clear, accurate fact each time. For instance:

State two methods of market segmentation.

Acceptable answer:
1. Demographic segmentation (e.g. by age, gender or income).
2. Geographic segmentation (e.g. by region or city).

Do not write long sentences. The examiner wants two distinct, correct points. If you write only one valid point, you can only score 1 mark.

4. Three-Mark ‘Explain’ Questions |

A 3‑mark ‘Explain’ question usually asks you to give one effect or reason, but you must build a short chain of reasoning. A good structure is: ‘Key term means… therefore… this leads to…’. For example:

Explain one advantage of a business using e‑commerce.

Model answer: E‑commerce is the selling of goods and services online. This allows the business to reach customers 24/7 and beyond its local area, therefore it can increase sales revenue without opening new physical stores. As a result, the business may benefit from higher profits.

Notice the chain: definition → first effect → consequence. Without the ‘therefore’ or ‘as a result’, the explanation stays superficial and you risk dropping marks.

5. Four-Mark ‘Calculate’ Questions |

Calculation questions are common in the finance and operations topics. Always show your workings — even if you make a slip, you can still gain method marks. Let’s look at a profit calculation.

Question: A business sells 250 units of a product at a price of £12 per unit. The total cost of making these units is £1,800. Calculate the profit.

Step 1: Work out total revenue.
Total revenue = Price × Quantity sold

Total revenue = £12 × 250 = £3,000

Step 2: Subtract total costs from total revenue.
Profit = Total revenue − Total costs

Profit = £3,000 − £1,800 = £1,200

Always present your final answer clearly and remember to include units (e.g. £, %, units). For percentage change questions, use the formula: (Difference ÷ Original) × 100. Writing out the formula earns you a mark even before you plug in numbers.

6. Six-Mark ‘Discuss/Analyse’ Questions |

6‑mark questions are the gateway to the higher grades. They require you to identify two separate impacts (advantages, disadvantages or a mix) and to develop each one with a clear logical chain. You must also use the case study evidence provided.

Question: A large supermarket has increased the minimum wage it pays to its staff. Discuss the likely effects on the business.

Model answer paragraph 1: One effect is an increase in labour costs. Paying the higher minimum wage means the supermarket’s variable costs per employee rise. Therefore, if the business keeps the same number of staff, its total costs will increase and its profit margin may fall, unless it can pass the cost on to customers through higher prices. In the case study, the supermarket operates in a competitive market, so raising prices might be risky.

Paragraph 2: However, a higher wage might improve staff motivation and retention. Better-paid workers are likely to be more productive and provide better customer service. As a result, the supermarket could see increased sales and lower staff turnover costs. In the long term, this could offset the extra wage expense and strengthen its reputation.

Notice how each paragraph links back to context (‘competitive market’, ‘case study’) and uses chains of reasoning. Aim for two well‑developed points rather than four thin ones — quality over quantity.

7. Nine-Mark ‘Justify’ Questions |

The 9‑mark questions carry a heavy weighting and test your ability to weigh up options and make a justified recommendation. A clear structure is essential: start by defining the options, then explore the advantages and disadvantages of each, and finally make a choice with a ‘because’ statement that picks the strongest reason in context.

Question: A growing private limited company needs £50,000 for expansion. Recommend whether it should use an internal source of finance (retained profit) or an external source (bank loan). Justify your answer.

Model structure:

Introduction: Briefly state the two options — retained profit is money kept in the business after tax, whereas a bank loan would involve borrowing from a bank with interest.

Option 1 — Retained profit: Advantage — no interest to pay and no loss of control. Disadvantage — the firm may not have £50,000 available, and using all of it could harm daily cash flow.

Option 2 — Bank loan: Advantage — the whole amount can be raised immediately, allowing fast expansion. Disadvantage — interest payments increase costs, and the business must provide security, which adds risk.

Justified conclusion: I recommend the bank loan because the case study tells us the company is growing rapidly and needs to act quickly to secure a new site. Using retained profit is not feasible as the cash flow forecast shows only £12,000 cash available. Therefore, although the loan increases costs, it is the only viable option to achieve timely expansion. The extra profit from expansion should cover the interest payments.

The recommendation must reject the alternative with a reason — ‘it is not suitable because…’ — and link explicitly to the context provided.

8. Using Case Study Information |

OCR markschemes repeatedly highlight ‘application’ as the difference between a middle‑level answer and a top‑band one. Application means you have selected a specific fact from the case study (e.g. the name of the product, its location, the number of employees, a particular financial figure) and woven it into your explanation.

For example, instead of writing ‘the business might benefit from lower costs,’ write ‘Better Post Ltd could benefit from lower costs because its 20 delivery vans cover long distances, so a switch to hybrid vehicles would reduce fuel expenditure.’ The phrase ‘Better Post Ltd’ and the fact ’20 delivery vans’ show application.

A simple technique: during your 2‑minute reading time, underline 5‑6 key numbers or phrases from the case study that you can sprinkle into your answers later.

9. Applying Business Concepts to Context |

Top‑performing candidates do not just drop in case‑study words; they adapt the general business theory to the specific situation described. For instance, when discussing the marketing mix, do not simply list the 4Ps — explain how the place (distribution channel) might be different for a small bakery compared to a multinational furniture retailer.

Example: ‘For the artisan bakery, using a selective distribution channel through local delis and farmers’ markets makes sense because the target market values freshness and handcrafted quality. In contrast, the furniture retailer in the case study needs a large warehouse showroom and an online platform because customers want to see and customise products.’ This shows you understand why different businesses use different strategies.

Always ask yourself: why would this business, given its size, market, and objectives, take this particular action?

10. Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them | 常见错误及如何避免

Mistake 1: Ignoring the command word. Students sometimes write a lengthy analysis for a ‘State’ question, wasting time, or give a one‑word answer to an ‘Explain’ question, losing easy marks.

Fix: Circle the command word and set a mental timer — 1 minute for 2 marks, 3 minutes for 3 marks, about 9‑10 minutes for a 9‑mark question.

Mistake 2: Not showing workings in calculations. Even if your final figure is wrong, an examiner can award marks for a correct formula or a correct intermediate step.

Fix: Always write the formula first, then substitute the numbers, then give the final answer with units.

Mistake 3: Repeating the same point. In a 6‑mark question, writing four sentences about increased costs counts as one underdeveloped point. The examiner expects two distinct impacts.

Fix: brainstorm two different effects quickly before you start writing, using phrases like ‘On one hand…’ and ‘On the other hand…’.

Mistake 4: Forgetting the context. Answers that could apply to any business are capped at a lower level. Without application, you cannot access the top bands.

Fix: name the business, use a figure from the text, or refer to the specific market described. Make it impossible for the examiner to think your answer was written for a different case study.
