📚 GCSE WJEC English: Summary Writing Key Points | GCSE WJEC 英语:Summary写作 考点精讲
Summary writing is a core skill in the WJEC GCSE English Language examination. It tests your ability to read a source text, identify the most important ideas and express them concisely in your own words. Success depends on careful reading, selection of relevant points and the ability to paraphrase without altering meaning.
摘要是WJEC GCSE英语语言考试中的核心技能。它考查你阅读原文、识别最重要观点并用自己语言简洁表达的能力。成功取决于仔细阅读、选择相关要点以及在不变更原意的前提下进行释义的能力。
1. What Is Summary Writing? | 什么是Summary写作?
A summary is a short, clear version of a longer text that captures only the main ideas and key supporting details. It does not include personal opinion, minor examples or repetition. The WJEC summary task usually asks you to condense a given passage into a specified number of words while preserving the original meaning.
摘要是较长文本的简短、清晰版本,仅包含主要观点和关键支持细节。它不包括个人观点、次要例子或重复内容。WJEC的摘要任务通常要求将指定段落压缩到规定的字数,同时保留原意。
WJEC exam papers often feature a non-fiction source, such as an article, a report or a letter. You will be asked to summarise the text in your own words, demonstrating both reading comprehension and writing control.
WJEC试卷通常提供非虚构类原文,如文章、报告或信件。你需要用自己的语言总结文本,展示阅读理解能力和写作控制力。
2. Assessment Objectives | 评估目标
The summary task is primarily linked to AO1 (Read and understand texts, select relevant information and use inference and deduction) and AO5 (Communicate clearly, effectively and imaginatively, in well-structured forms). You are marked on your ability to pick out the relevant points and express them in a concise, logical order.
摘要任务主要对应AO1(阅读并理解文本,选择相关信息并进行推断和演绎)和AO5(以结构良好的形式清晰、有效、富有想象力地交流)。你的得分取决于筛选相关观点并以简洁、逻辑的顺序表达的能力。
Specific mark schemes reward the accurate identification of key ideas, the use of paraphrase, and the coherent structuring of the summary. Copying large chunks of the original text or missing the central argument will lose marks.
具体评分方案奖励准确识别关键观点、运用释义以及连贯组织摘要结构。照搬大段原文或遗漏核心论点会失分。
3. Reading the Source Text | 阅读原文
Start by reading the text carefully at least twice. On the first reading, focus on understanding the overall topic and the writer’s main purpose. On the second reading, underline or highlight the sentences and phrases that carry the most important information — often topic sentences, conclusions and key data.
开始时要仔细阅读文本至少两遍。第一遍阅读时,专注于理解整体话题和作者的主要目的。第二遍时,在承载最重要信息的句子和短语下划线或高亮——通常是主题句、结论和关键数据。
Pay attention to the question prompt. WJEC tasks often specify a focus, such as ‘Summarise the benefits and risks of solar energy’ or ‘Summarise the main arguments for and against a four-day school week’. Your underlined points must directly answer this focus.
注意题目提示。WJEC任务通常会指定一个焦点,例如“概括太阳能的益处和风险”或“概括支持和反对每周四天上学的主要论据”。你标记的要点必须直接回应这个焦点。
4. Identifying Main Ideas | 识别主要观点
A main idea is the central point a writer develops in a paragraph or a section. It is usually supported by examples, statistics or quotations. In summary writing, you need to separate the main idea from the supporting details and decide whether the detail is essential or can be omitted.
主要观点是作者在一个段落或章节中展开的核心论点。它通常有例子、统计数据或引文支持。在摘要写作中,你需要将主要观点与支持细节分离,并判断细节是必不可少还是可以省略。
Ask yourself: if I remove this sentence, does the meaning of the whole text change? If the answer is no, that sentence is probably a minor detail. If the answer is yes, it is a main idea that must be included in your summary.
问自己:如果我删除这个句子,整篇文章的意思会改变吗?如果答案是不会,那么这个句子很可能是一个次要细节。如果答案是会,这就是一个必须纳入摘要的主要观点。
- Main idea: Solar energy reduces carbon emissions.
- Minor detail: A typical solar panel generates 300 watts per hour.
- 主要观点:太阳能减少碳排放。
- 次要细节:一块典型的太阳能电池板每小时发电300瓦。
5. Selecting Relevant Details | 选择相关细节
Not all details are equally important. Once you have identified the main ideas, select a few key supporting details that are essential to clarify or prove those ideas. Use your word limit as a guide: if you are asked to write 120 words, you cannot include every statistic.
并非所有细节都同等重要。一旦识别出主要观点,选择几个对阐明或证明这些观点必不可少的关键支持细节。以你的字数限制为指引:如果要求写120词,就不能囊括每个统计数据。
Avoid including repeated information, anecdotes, rhetorical questions from the original text, or any evaluation or commentary. The WJEC summary is purely a condensed version of the source content, not a critical review.
避免纳入重复信息、轶事、原文中的修辞性问题,或任何评价和评论。WJEC摘要纯粹是原文内容的浓缩版本,不是批评性评论。
6. Paraphrasing Techniques | 释义技巧
Paraphrasing means rewriting someone else’s ideas in your own words without changing the original meaning. It is the most important language skill for the summary task because direct copying counts against you. Effective paraphrasing involves changing vocabulary, sentence structure and word order.
释义意味着用你自己的语言重写他人的观点而不改变原意。这是摘要任务中最重要的语言技能,因为直接照抄会扣分。有效的释义包括改变词汇、句子结构和词序。
Use synonyms carefully. For example, instead of ‘The government implemented a new policy’, you could write ‘The authorities introduced a new initiative’. However, do not change technical terms or proper nouns, as these carry specific meanings.
仔细使用同义词。例如,不用“政府实施了一项新政策”,你可以写“当局推出了一项新倡议”。但不要改动技术术语或专有名词,因为它们有特定含义。
Change the sentence structure. Transform a passive sentence into an active one: ‘Pollution is caused by factories’ becomes ‘Factories cause pollution’. Combine two short sentences into one longer sentence, or split a complex sentence into simpler ones, as long as the logical relationship remains clear.
改变句子结构。将被动句变为主动句:“污染是由工厂造成的”变为“工厂造成污染”。将两个短句合并为一个长句,或把复杂句拆分为简单句,只要逻辑关系保持清晰即可。
7. Structuring Your Summary | 结构组织
A well-structured summary follows a logical order that reflects the original text. Usually, you should present the ideas in the same sequence they appear in the source, unless the question asks you to reorganise them. Begin with a clear opening sentence that states the topic and the author’s central contention.
结构良好的摘要遵循反映原文的逻辑顺序。通常,你应该按照原文出现的顺序呈现观点,除非题目要求重组。以一个清晰的开头句开始,说明主题和作者的中心论点。
Use linking words and phrases to connect ideas smoothly. Words like ‘furthermore’, ‘in addition’, ‘however’ and ‘consequently’ help the summary flow and show the relationship between points. Ensure each sentence contributes new, relevant information without redundancy.
使用连接词和短语流畅地连接观点。诸如“此外”、“另外”、“然而”和“因此”等词语有助于摘要的流畅性,并展示要点之间的关系。确保每个句子都提供新的、相关的信息,没有冗余。
| Original order | Summary structure |
| 1. Problem of plastic waste | 1. 塑料垃圾问题 | 1. Plastic waste threatens the environment. | 1. 塑料垃圾威胁环境。 |
| 2. Recycling methods | 2. 回收方法 | 2. Various recycling methods can reduce pollution. | 2. 多种回收方法可以减少污染。 |
| 3. Economic benefits | 3. 经济效益 | 3. These methods also bring economic gains. | 3. 这些方法还带来经济收益。 |
8. Writing Concisely | 简洁写作
Conciseness means using the fewest words possible to convey a point without losing clarity. Eliminate unnecessary adjectives, adverbs and redundant phrases. For instance, ‘The results were completely and totally surprising’ can be written simply as ‘The results were surprising’.
简洁意味着用最少的词传达观点而不失清晰。删除不必要的形容词、副词和冗余短语。例如,“结果完全且彻底令人惊讶”可以直接写成“结果令人惊讶”。
Use one precise verb instead of a long phrase. Compare ‘The company made the decision to expand’ with ‘The company decided to expand’. The second version is tighter and saves words. Avoid over-nominalisation, which makes your writing heavy and vague.
使用一个精确的动词代替长短语。比较“公司做出了扩张的决定”和“公司决定扩张”。第二个版本更紧凑,也节省字数。避免过度名词化,这会使你的文章沉重而模糊。
In the WJEC exam, you are often given a specific word count, such as 50–60 words. This forces you to be disciplined with language. Once you have drafted your summary, check each word and ask, ‘Is this necessary?’
在WJEC考试中,常常会给出特定的字数要求,如50-60词。这迫使你对语言加以约束。一旦完成摘要草稿,检查每一个词并问:“这有必要吗?”
9. Common Mistakes to Avoid | 常见错误
Many students lose marks by including too much information from a single section of the text while ignoring others. This unbalances the summary. Another frequent error is copying the exact wording of the source, which shows an inability to paraphrase and may be treated as lifting.
许多学生因囊括文本单个部分的过多信息而忽略其他部分而失分。这会使摘要失衡。另一个常见错误是照搬原文的精确措辞,这表明无法释义,并可能被视为照抄。
Adding personal views, explanations or conclusions not present in the source is also a serious mistake. A summary must be objective and entirely based on the original text. Likewise, using bullet points or a list format instead of continuous prose may not meet the requirements of a written summary.
加入原文没有的个人观点、解释或结论也是一个严重错误。摘要必须客观,完全基于原文。同样,使用项目符号或列表格式而非连贯的散文可能不符合书面摘要的要求。
- Mistake: Including a personal evaluation (‘The author’s argument is convincing’).
- Correction: State only what the author argues, not your judgement.
- 错误:包含个人评价(“作者的论点令人信服”)。
- 纠正:只陈述作者的论点,不做判断。
10. Exam Tips and Time Management | 考试技巧与时间管理
Allocate your time wisely. The summary question is usually worth about 5–8 marks and should take around 10–15 minutes. Spend roughly 5 minutes reading and underlining key points, 5 minutes drafting, and the last 5 minutes editing and checking your word count.
合理分配时间。摘要题通常值5-8分,应花费约10-15分钟。花大约5分钟阅读和划出关键点,5分钟起草,最后5分钟编辑并检查字数。
Write your summary in third person and in the present tense, unless the original text clearly refers to the past. Maintain a formal, neutral tone. After writing, read through your summary to ensure it flows as a single coherent paragraph and contains no repetition or obvious gaps.
用第三人称和现在时写作摘要,除非原文明显指向过去。保持正式、中立的语气。写完后,通读摘要以确保它作为一个连贯的段落流畅,不含重复或明显的空白。
Practise with past papers under timed conditions. Use the mark schemes to self-assess: check if you identified all core points, used paraphrasing correctly and stayed within the word limit. Regular practice will sharpen your ability to separate what is essential from what is just interesting.
用往年的试卷在计时条件下练习。使用评分方案进行自我评估:检查是否识别了所有核心要点,正确使用释义,并在字数限制内。定期练习将提高你区分必要信息和有趣内容的能力。
11. Sample Task and Response | 示例任务与回答
Source text (extract): ‘In recent years, urban gardening has gained popularity as a way to grow fresh produce in limited spaces. Not only does it provide individuals with access to affordable vegetables, but it also promotes physical activity and mental well-being. However, gardeners must contend with challenges such as soil contamination and limited sunlight in high-rise buildings.’
原文(节选):“近年来,城市园艺作为一种在有限空间种植新鲜农产品的方式日益流行。它不仅为个人提供了获得可负担蔬菜的途径,还能促进身体活动和心理健康。然而,园丁必须应对高楼大厦中土壤污染和有限阳光等挑战。”
Summary (53 words): Urban gardening allows people to grow affordable fresh food in small spaces, while encouraging exercise and improving mental health. Nevertheless, issues like polluted soil and a lack of sunlight in tall buildings create obstacles. This activity has become more common recently due to its personal and environmental benefits.
摘要(53词):城市园艺使人们能在狭小空间种植可负担的新鲜食物,同时鼓励锻炼并改善心理健康。然而,污染土壤和高楼中缺乏阳光等问题构成了障碍。由于个人和环境益处,这项活动最近变得更加普遍。
Notice how the summary condenses two sentences of benefits, rephrases the contrast and avoids copying the structure ‘not only… but also…’. The central idea of popularity is moved to the end, showing flexibility in paraphrasing.
注意摘要如何压缩两处关于益处的句子,重述对比并避免照搬“不仅……而且……”的结构。流行的核心观点被移到末尾,展示了释义的灵活性。
