📚 IGCSE AQA Chemistry: Electrochemistry Essentials | IGCSE AQA

This comprehensive revision guide covers the essential topics in electrochemistry for the AQA IGCSE Chemistry specification. Electrochemistry deals with the relationship between electricity and chemical reactions, split into two main areas: electrolysis, where electricity drives non-spontaneous reactions, and electrochemical cells, where spontaneous reactions produce electricity. Mastering these concepts is vital for understanding metal extraction, electroplating, and modern energy systems like fuel cells.

1. What is Electrolysis? |

Electrolysis is the process of using a direct electric current to decompose a molten or dissolved ionic compound (the electrolyte) into its elements. The compound must contain freely moving ions, achieved by melting or dissolving in water.

A power source forces electrons through the external circuit. Positive ions (cations) migrate to the negative electrode (cathode) and gain electrons, undergoing reduction. Negative ions (anions) migrate to the positive electrode (anode) and lose electrons, undergoing oxidation.

Electrolysis is essential for extracting reactive metals (e.g. aluminium) and for purifying copper or coating objects in electroplating. It is an endothermic process requiring energy input.

2. Key Terms in Electrolysis |

It is important to be clear about the definitions used in electrolysis. The electrolyte is the ionic compound (molten or in solution) that conducts electricity and is decomposed. The electrodes are rods of either graphite (inert) or metal that make contact with the electrolyte.

The cathode is the negative electrode where reduction occurs, attracting cations. The anode is the positive electrode where oxidation occurs
