1. Read the Stem Twice, Options Once |

Before looking at the options, read the question stem carefully — twice if needed. Many mistakes happen because students rush and misinterpret what is being asked. Look for keywords like ‘not’, ‘always’, ‘only’, ‘best describes’ or ‘immediately’. Once you understand the demand, scan the four options. Your brain now has a clear target, making it easier to eliminate irrelevancies.

Pay special attention to negative phrasing, e.g. ‘Which of the following is not a property of ionic compounds?’ If you miss the ‘not’, you will likely select a true property and lose the mark. A quick mental highlight of these words prevents such slips.

2. Elimination: Cross Out to See Clearly |

Even if you are unsure of the correct answer, you can often identify at least one or two options that are definitely wrong. Physically cross them out on the question paper. This narrows your choices from four to two or three, dramatically improving your odds. The elimination method works best with questions involving definitions, trends, or factual recall.

For example, if a question asks which substance is an element, and you see CO₂, H₂O, O₂, and NaCl, you can immediately eliminate carbon dioxide (compound), water (compound) and sodium chloride (compound), leaving only O₂ as the element. Cross out, and the right answer stares at you.

3. Use the Data Sheet as Your Cheat Sheet |

IGCSE Edexcel Chemistry provides a data sheet in the exam. It contains a periodic table, reactivity series, formulae of common ions, and other key information. Many students forget to use it during multiple-choice sections. Whenever a question involves relative atomic masses, ion charges, or predicting displacement reactions, glance at the data sheet — it often gives you the answer directly or helps you check your reasoning.

IGCSE Edexcel

For instance, to determine the formula of magnesium nitrate, you can quickly look up the nitrate ion (NO₃⁻) and know magnesium forms Mg²⁺. Crossing charges gives Mg(NO₃)₂ — no need to memorise every polyatomic ion formula. The data sheet is a legal aid; use it shamelessly.

4. Unit Tricks: Let the Numbers Do the Work | 单位技巧:让数字替你干活

In mole calculations, the units often reveal whether you should multiply or divide. If you are given mass in grams and relative formula mass in g/mol, dividing mass by Mᵣ gives moles. If a question gives concentration in mol/dm³ and volume in cm³, remember that 1 dm³ = 1000 cm³; conversion errors are common distractors. A quick dimensional check — does my calculation produce mol, g, or dm³? — can save you from picking a trap option.

An option with numerically correct value but in wrong units is designed to catch you. Always match the unit required by the question. For example, if the question asks for volume in dm³ and you calculate in cm³, the wrong option 24000 cm³ looks tempting when the correct one is 24 dm³. Spot the unit before finalising.

5. Mole Ratio Shortcuts Without Full Working |

Stoichiometry questions do not require full written steps in multiple-choice format. Use the mental shortcut: write the balanced equation, pick the relevant mole ratio, and scale directly. For example, if 2 moles of Mg produce 2 moles of MgO, the ratio is 1:1, and you can convert mass of Mg → moles of Mg → moles of MgO → mass of MgO by simply multiplying by the Mᵣ ratio. This chain can be compressed into one fraction: (mass of Mg / 24) × 40 = mass of MgO. Memorising recurring ratios for common reactions (like acid‑carbonate, combustion) also speeds up your thinking.

Beware of limiting reactant traps where both reactant masses are given. Quickly calculate moles of each reactant; the one that runs out first determines the amount of product. Often one option matches the product mass if you wrongly use the excess reactant — eliminate it if you know the correct limiting reactant.

6. Spot the Distractors: Common Wrong-Answer Patterns |

Edexcel examiners craft distractors based on typical mistakes. Recognising these patterns lets you eliminate options even when you are unsure. Common traps include: confusing ‘atom’ with ‘molecule’ (e.g. noble gases are monatomic, not diatomic); mixing up ionic and covalent properties; assuming all acids are strong; swapping anode and cathode products in electrolysis; and thinking higher concentration always means faster reaction in zero‑order contexts (which are not in IGCSE, but similar misconception about rate).

Another frequent distractor: giving an electronic configuration of an ion instead of the atom, or vice versa. For example, asking for the electronic structure of Na⁺ (2,8) while offering 2,8,1 as an option. Always check the charge before choosing. If you notice two options that are direct opposites, one of them is often the correct answer — but not always, so verify with chemistry logic.

7. Equations: Check State Symbols and Balancing |

Questions that ask ‘Which equation correctly represents…’ often test balancing and state symbols simultaneously. First, quickly check if the equation is balanced for all atoms. If three options are balanced and one is not, eliminate the unbalanced one immediately. Next, look at state symbols: in precipitation reactions, one product must be (s); in neutralisation, water is (l); in combustion, water is usually (g) due to heat of reaction, but be cautious with standard conditions. If the question mentions ‘aqueous solution’, the ionic equation should have (aq) for soluble salts.

A sneaky trick: an ionic equation may look correct but shows spectator ions that should be cancelled. If you see Na⁺ or NO₃⁻ appearing unchanged on both sides in a question about precipitation, that option is incorrect because spectator ions must be omitted from the net ionic equation. Know your solubility rules to identify precipitates quickly.

8. Electrolysis: Predict Products Using Reactivity |

Electrolysis questions often puzzle students, but a simple rule of thumb works for multiple choice: at the cathode, the less reactive element (metal or hydrogen) is discharged; at the anode, the halide > hydroxide > other common anions like sulfate or nitrate (unless concentrated solution changes the order). For molten compounds, it is straightforward — the metal goes to cathode, non‑metal to anode. Use the reactivity series from your data sheet: if the metal is more reactive than hydrogen, hydrogen gas is produced at the cathode in aqueous solution; if less reactive, the metal plates out.

E.g., electrolysis of aqueous copper(II) sulfate with copper electrodes: copper anode dissolves (Cu → Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻), cathode gains copper (Cu²⁺ + 2e⁻ → Cu). A classic distractor says oxygen forms at the anode; recognize that copper electrodes are non‑inert, so the anode reaction differs. Always check electrode material — inert (graphite/platinum) or reactive metal.

9. Energetics: Read Graphs and Sign Conventions |

Exothermic and endothermic questions frequently use energy profile diagrams. The key trick: exothermic reactions go downwards from reactants to products (ΔH negative), endothermic go upwards (ΔH positive). In a multiple‑choice diagram, the arrow length representing activation energy or ΔH can be directly compared. If asked to calculate ΔH from bond energies, use bonds broken minus bonds formed; many students reverse this. Remember, breaking bonds absorbs energy (+), making bonds releases energy (−). The option with the sign reversed is almost always present — pick the correct sign by thinking ‘exo = exit heat, negative’.

Calorimetry questions: q = mcΔT. The mass m is usually the mass of water or solution, not the mass of fuel burnt. Read carefully. If the question gives mass of spirit burner before and after, that difference is the mass of fuel, not the m in the equation. Being aware of this typical switch prevents a costly mistake.

量热法题:q = mcΔT。

10. Rates: Interpret Graphs Without Calculations |

Rate of reaction multiple‑choice items often include a graph of volume of gas vs time, or mass loss vs time. The trick: a steeper initial slope means faster reaction. A higher final volume or mass loss means more product, which could be due to larger amount of reactant, not necessarily faster rate. Distractors confuse rate with extent. If two curves start at the same steepness but one levels off higher, the reaction rates are initially the same (same conditions) but one had more reactant. If one curve is steeper throughout, that reaction had a higher concentration, temperature, or catalyst.

For explaining rate differences, apply collision theory: any factor that increases collision frequency or energy of collisions (concentration, pressure, temperature, surface area, catalyst) increases rate. A question might ask ‘Which change decreases the rate?’ and list ‘increase particle size’ (decreases surface area) — that’s correct, while ‘increase concentration’ or ‘increase temperature’ would increase rate. Watch for phrase ‘particle size’ meaning the size of individual pieces, not surface area directly.

11. Equilibrium: Le Chatelier on the Fly |

For reversible reaction questions, use Le Chatelier’s principle in seconds. If a change is imposed, the equilibrium shifts to oppose it. In multiple choice, you can often find the correct shift by seeing which direction consumes the added substance or counteracts the change. For temperature: if forward reaction is exothermic, increasing temperature favours the endothermic reverse reaction, so yield of products decreases. Distractors will often state the opposite shift. Also, a catalyst does not affect the position of equilibrium — it only speeds up reaching equilibrium. Any option claiming catalyst increases yield is wrong.

Pressure changes only affect equilibria involving gases with unequal numbers of molecules on each side. Count the moles of gas: higher pressure favours side with fewer gas molecules. If the number of gas molecules is the same on both sides, pressure has no effect. A common distractor says pressure shifts the equilibrium when it actually does not. Count the molecules quickly.

12. Organic Chemistry: Names and Formulae Shortcuts |

Organic questions test naming, formulae, and reactions. For alkanes, alkenes, alcohols and carboxylic acids, memorise the functional group and general formula. A quick trick: to find the molecular formula of an alkane, use CₙH₂ₙ₊₂; for alkene CₙH₂ₙ; for alcohol CₙH₂ₙ₊₁OH (or CₙH₂ₙ₊₂O); carboxylic acid CₙH₂ₙ₊₁COOH (or CₙH₂ₙO₂). If an option gives a formula that does not match the homologous series pattern, eliminate it. Displayed formula questions often hide a different functional group or isomer — check the group attached to the chain.

For reactions: alkenes decolourise bromine water (addition), alkanes do not (substitution only under UV). A classic distractor says alkanes decolourise bromine water rapidly. Fermentation produces ethanol and CO₂, while hydration of ethene produces only ethanol. Multiple choice often swaps products. When a question asks what is formed from oxidation of ethanol, remember: mild oxidation (acidified potassium dichromate(VI)) gives ethanoic acid; complete combustion gives CO₂ and H₂O. Know these pathways to avoid the ‘wrong product’ trap.
