📚 Overseas Students’ Personal Safety Guide |
For young people studying abroad, independence brings new adventures and responsibilities. Personal safety is the foundation that allows you to explore, learn and grow with confidence. This guide covers essential practices to help you stay secure throughout your international study journey.
1. Understanding Your Surroundings |
From the moment you arrive, map out your neighbourhood carefully. Take a walk during daylight hours and identify the nearest police station, hospital, pharmacy and grocery store. The sooner you build a mental map, the more naturally you will move around with confidence.
Always know which streets are well-lit and which areas to avoid after dark. Ask your university’s international student office or local students for insight on neighbourhoods that may have higher crime rates or are unsafe late at night.
2. Secure Accommodation |
Whether you live in a dormitory, a shared apartment or a homestay, lock your doors and windows every time you leave, even if just for a few minutes. Use deadbolts and window locks if available, and never hide a spare key outside under obvious objects.
If you are renting privately, check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are in working order. Ensure the building has a fire escape route and that you understand how to exit in an emergency. Avoid ground-floor apartments with easy window access from the street.
When letting a repair person or delivery driver in, verify their identity through a peephole or video doorbell. A simple chain lock while partially opening the door gives you an extra moment to assess the situation.
3. Safe Travel Practices |
Use licensed taxi services or reputable ride-sharing apps instead of accepting rides from unmarked vehicles. Before getting in, match the number plate, car model and driver’s photo with the information on your app. Share your trip status with a friend you trust.
On public transport, sit near the driver or in designated safety zones if travelling late. Keep your bag on your lap and avoid falling asleep. Be discreet with your phone and wallet, particularly when the doors are about to open or close, as that is when snatch thefts often occur.
Walking alone at night should be avoided whenever possible. Stick to well-lit main roads, walk facing oncoming traffic, and carry a personal alarm or whistle. Remove headphones so you remain fully aware of footsteps or approaching vehicles.
4. Personal Belongings Protection |
Keep your passport, residence permit and other important documents in a secure location, such as a locked drawer or safe. Carry only photocopies or digital images for daily identification unless the original is specifically required.
When withdrawing cash from an ATM, shield the keypad and be aware of your environment. Use machines inside banks or well-monitored areas rather than isolated street-side kiosks. Split your money into different pockets so you never expose all your cash at once.
5. Online Safety and Scams |
International students are frequent targets for phishing emails and scam calls that claim to be from immigration authorities or Chinese embassies. No legitimate official will ever demand immediate payment by phone or threatening messages. Always verify through official websites and contact numbers you look up yourself.
Be careful about sharing your live location or daily routines on social media. Burglars and scammers can piece together information from posts to know when you are away from home. Adjust your privacy settings so only close friends can see your updates.
6. Social Situations and Night Safety |
When attending parties or gatherings, go with friends you trust and agree in advance that you will leave together. Never leave your drink unattended, and if you feel unexpectedly dizzy or disoriented, alert someone you trust immediately and seek help.
Avoid accepting open drinks from strangers or punch bowls where you cannot see the source. Stick to sealed bottles or watch your drink being poured directly in front of you. If you must temporarily leave your drink, discard it.
Know your limits with alcohol. Intoxication makes you an easier target for theft, assault or risky decisions. Eat a proper meal beforehand, and pace your drinking by alternating with water. Always carry enough cash or a charged phone to arrange a safe ride home.
7. Emergency Response and Contacts |
Memorise and store the local emergency number (112 in many European countries, 999 in the UK, 000 in Australia, 911 in the US and Canada). Save your university security hotline, international student office number and the nearest police station number in your phone contacts.
| Country/Region | Emergency Number | Chinese Embassy/Consulate Emergency |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | 999 or 112 | +44-20-74368294 (consular protection) |
| United States | 911 | +1-202-4952266 (consular protection) |
| Australia | 000 | +61-2-62283906 (consular protection) |
| Canada | 911 | +1-613-7893434 (consular protection) |
Practise what to say in a simple emergency call script in the local language: ‘My name is… I am at… I need police/ambulance/fire.’ Keep a card in your wallet with your address, emergency contacts and any medical conditions written in English and the local language.
8. Health and Mental Well-being | 健康与心理健康
Register with a local doctor as soon as you settle in, and understand how your health insurance works for routine visits and emergencies. Keep a small first-aid kit with bandages, antiseptic, pain relief and any personal prescriptions. Know where the nearest 24-hour pharmacy is located.
Loneliness and culture shock can lower your awareness of danger and lead to poor decision-making. Stay connected with supportive friends and family, but also build local networks through student societies or sports clubs. Mental well-being is an essential component of personal safety.
9. Legal Rights and Consular Assistance |
Familiarise yourself with the basic laws of the host country, particularly around alcohol consumption, drug possession, renting rights and traffic regulations. Ignorance of the law is never accepted as a valid excuse, and a minor offence can jeopardise your visa status.
If you are stopped by the police, stay calm, keep your hands visible and ask whether you are free to leave. You have the right to contact your consulate. Save the Chinese Embassy’s consular protection hotline in your phone and email yourself a copy of your passport and visa.
10. Cultural Adaptation and Confidence |
A confident, aware appearance can often deter potential offenders. Walk with purpose, keep your head up and scan your environment without looking nervous. Practice saying firmly and loudly in the local language phrases such as ‘Leave me alone’ or ‘I don’t know you’ if needed.
Learn about local customs and social etiquette so you can blend in more smoothly. Adapting to the culture does not mean abandoning your own identity, but it reduces unwanted attention and helps you build trust with neighbours and classmates. Safety grows when you are part of a community, not an isolated outsider.
