1. Understanding Sensitive Majors in Canadian Context |

In the Canadian immigration context, a ‘sensitive major’ does not have a statutory definition but refers to fields of study that could contribute to the design, development, or production of weapons of mass destruction, advanced military technology, or activities detrimental to Canada’s national security. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) assess applications against indicators derived from the National Security Screening Manual, international non-proliferation regimes, and allied intelligence. Commonly flagged disciplines include nuclear physics, aerospace engineering, artificial intelligence, biochemistry, cryptography, and advanced materials.
