Cambridge Year 7 Chemistry: Essential Practical Exam Tips | 剑桥Year 7化学:实验考核要点

📚 Cambridge Year 7 Chemistry: Essential Practical Exam Tips | 剑桥Year 7化学:实验考核要点

Practical work is at the heart of the Cambridge Year 7 Chemistry course. You will be assessed not just on your knowledge of scientific facts, but also on your ability to work safely in a laboratory, use equipment correctly, make careful observations, record data and draw valid conclusions. This guide covers the key practical skills you need to master to succeed in your assessments.

1. Safety First in the Lab |

Always wear safety goggles and a lab coat to protect your eyes and clothing from chemicals and heat.

Tie back long hair and remove dangling jewellery that could catch fire or dip into chemicals.

Never eat, drink or taste any chemicals. Do not touch chemicals with bare hands unless instructed.

When smelling a substance, waft the vapour towards your nose with your hand — never put your nose directly over a container.

Report all spills, breakages and accidents to your teacher immediately, no matter how small.

2. Common Laboratory Apparatus |

A beaker is a wide glass container used for holding, mixing and heating larger volumes of liquid. It is not suitable for accurate volume measurement.

A measuring cylinder gives a more precise volume reading. Always read the bottom of the meniscus at eye level.

Test tubes are used for small-scale reactions, often held in a test tube rack. Heat them gently with a test tube holder.

A conical flask prevents splashing during swirling, making it ideal for titrations and mixing.

An evaporating dish is used to evaporate the liquid from a solution, leaving the solid residue behind.

A Bunsen burner provides a controllable flame for heating. Learn to adjust the air hole to change the flame type.

3. Making Measurements Accurately |

When using a measuring cylinder, your eye must be level with the surface of the liquid to avoid parallax error. Read the bottom of the curved meniscus.

For mass, use an electronic balance. Place a weighing boat or paper on the pan, then press the tare or zero button before adding your substance.

When measuring temperature, insert the thermometer so that the bulb is fully immersed in the substance but not touching the bottom or sides of the container.

Record all measurements with correct units: volume in cm³ or mL, mass in grams (g), temperature in degrees Celsius (°C), time in seconds (s).

4. Observation and Inference |

An observation is something you detect directly with your senses or instruments, such as a colour change, a gas being produced (bubbles), a precipitate forming, or a temperature rise.

An inference is a conclusion you draw based on those observations, for example ‘gas is produced therefore a chemical reaction has taken place’.

Never confuse observation with inference. ‘Bubbles appeared’ is an observation; ‘hydrogen gas was released’ is an inference that requires further testing.

Record all observations in a clear, chronological order. Note the initial appearance of reactants and the final appearance of products.

5. Recording and Presenting Data |

Draw a neat results table before starting your experiment. Each column must have a heading that includes the quantity measured and its unit, e.g. Time (s).

Record data directly into the table during the experiment, using a pencil to allow corrections. Never write on loose scraps of paper.

When plotting a graph, put the independent variable on the x‑axis and the dependent variable on the y‑axis. Label axes clearly with quantity and unit.

Choose a sensible scale that spreads data points across at least half of the grid. Draw a line of best fit — it does not have to pass through every point.

6. Variables and Fair Testing |

The independent variable is the factor you deliberately change. The dependent variable is the factor you measure or observe in response.

Control variables are kept constant to ensure a fair test. Only one independent variable should be changed at a time.

For example, if you investigate how temperature affects the rate at which salt dissolves, temperature is the independent variable, time to dissolve is the dependent variable, and the volume of water and amount of salt must stay the same.

Always list at least three control variables in your experimental plan to show you understand fair testing.

7. Heating with a Bunsen Burner |

Before lighting the burner, check that the air hole is closed. Connect the rubber tubing to the gas tap, then light the gas with a splint to produce a yellow safety flame.

The yellow flame is visible and cooler; it is used when you are not actively heating, or to show that the burner is on.

To obtain a hot blue flame, open the air hole slowly. This roaring flame is the hottest and is used for rapid heating, but is almost invisible.

When heating a liquid in a test tube, hold it at an angle pointing away from yourself and others, moving the tube gently through the flame.

Use an evaporating dish on a tripod and gauze when you want to evaporate water from a solution to obtain a solid.

8. Separating Mixtures |

Filtration separates an insoluble solid from a liquid. Fold filter paper into a cone, place it in a funnel, and pour the mixture; the solid (residue) stays on the paper, the liquid (filtrate) passes through.

Evaporation is used to separate a soluble solid from a solution. Heat the solution in an evaporating dish until the liquid evaporates, leaving dry crystals behind.

Distillation separates a solvent from a solution or a mixture of liquids with different boiling points. The substance with the lower boiling point evaporates first, then condenses back to liquid in a condenser.

Paper chromatography separates mixtures of coloured substances. A spot of ink is placed on chromatography paper, the paper is dipped in a solvent, and different colours travel up at different speeds.

In any separation practical, label all your apparatus clearly and record the appearance of the separated components.

9. Using Indicators and pH | 使用指示剂和pH

Litmus paper turns red in acidic solutions and blue in alkaline solutions. It is a simple indicator for acidity or alkalinity.

Universal indicator gives a range of colours across the pH scale (0-14). Red indicates strong acid, green is neutral (pH 7), and purple indicates strong alkali.

Always add only a few drops of indicator to the solution you are testing. Too much will affect the pH reading.

The pH scale is logarithmic — a change of one pH unit means a ten‑fold change in hydrogen ion concentration.

acid + alkali → salt + water

Handle acids and alkalis with care; even dilute solutions can irritate skin. Wash any splashes with plenty of water.

10. Drawing Conclusions and Evaluating |

A conclusion must directly answer the aim of the experiment. Refer back to your results and state clearly whether they support your prediction.

Do not just repeat the results — explain what the data tells you about the scientific idea being tested.

Evaluation involves identifying limitations in your method or anomalous data points that do not fit the pattern.

Suggest realistic improvements, such as ‘use a more precise thermometer’, ‘repeat the experiment more times’ or ‘insulate the beaker to reduce heat loss’.

A well‑written evaluation shows that you can think critically about practical work, a key skill at Year 7 and beyond.
