📚 Case Study Practice in Year 7 Cambridge Psychology |
Welcome to this practise session on psychological case studies. In Year 7 Cambridge Psychology, you will learn how psychologists use the case study method to explore behaviour in depth. A case study involves detailed investigation into the life, experiences and behaviour of an individual or a small group. By working through real-life scenarios, you can sharpen your analytical skills and apply psychological concepts. This article will guide you step by step through a classic case, then offer you a chance to try your own analysis.
1. What is a Case Study? |
In psychology, a case study focuses on a single individual or a small group in great detail.
It uses multiple sources of information such as interviews, questionnaires, observation and medical records.
Because the data is in-depth, case studies are especially useful for studying rare or unusual behaviours.
However, findings from a case study may not apply to everyone, so generalisation can be limited.
Case studies also rely heavily on the researcher’s interpretation, which can introduce subjectivity.
2. Meet Tom – The Case |
Tom is a 10-year-old boy who has developed an intense fear of dogs. He lives with his parents and older sister. Up until six months ago, Tom was happy to play in the park and would sometimes stroke friendly dogs.
One afternoon, while walking home alone, a large dog jumped over a fence and barked aggressively at him. The dog chased him until he reached his front door. Although he was not bitten, Tom felt terrified and his heart pounded. After this incident, Tom began avoiding dogs. He refuses to walk past houses where he knows dogs live, and even seeing a picture of a dog in a book makes him anxious.
3. Gathering Background Information |
To understand Tom’s fear, a psychologist gathers background information from his parents and school records. Before the incident, Tom had no history of anxiety. He was described as a cheerful, active child. His mother reports that Tom now has trouble sleeping and often asks to check if the street is clear of dogs before going out.
The school counsellor noticed that during a lesson on pets, Tom became visibly distressed and asked to leave the room. His academic performance has not dropped, but his teachers note he is less willing to participate in group activities that involve outdoor trips.
4. Observing Behaviour |
A psychologist might observe Tom in different settings. In a controlled playroom with toys including a stuffed dog, Tom initially avoided that area. When the toy was placed near him, his hands trembled and he moved his chair back. At home, the psychologist witnessed Tom refuse to go into the garden after hearing a neighbour’s dog bark.
These observations suggest that the fear has generalised from the original stimulus (the aggressive dog) to other dog-related cues, including toys and sounds.
5. Interview Data |
During a semi-structured interview, Tom described the chasing event in vivid detail. He said, ‘I thought the dog was going to bite me. My legs felt weak and I couldn’t breathe properly.’ He also stated, ‘I don’t know why I’m still scared, because I know not all dogs are mean, but my body just panics.’
His mother added that she had tried to comfort Tom by explaining that dogs can be friendly, but this did not reduce his fear. The interview data helps the psychologist understand that the fear is not purely rational and has strong emotional and physical components.
6. Applying Psychological Concepts |
This case can be explained by classical conditioning, a concept from the behaviourist approach. Before the incident, the dog (neutral stimulus) produced no fear. The frightening chase (unconditioned stimulus) triggered a natural fear response (unconditioned response). After being paired with the chase, the dog became a conditioned stimulus that now produces a conditioned fear response.
Furthermore, stimulus generalisation has occurred: Tom fears not only the original large dog but also smaller dogs, toys, and barks. This fits with the principles of generalisation in classical conditioning. Operant conditioning might also be involved: avoiding dogs reduces his anxiety (negative reinforcement), making him more likely to avoid them in the future.
7. Linking Theory to the Case |
By linking theory to Tom’s experience, we can develop a more complete explanation. The initial fear was a conditioned emotional response. Over time, avoidance behaviours were strengthened because they offered temporary relief. This creates a cycle that maintains the phobia.
Psychologists might also consider the role of observational learning: Tom’s sister once screamed when a small dog approached, but there is no strong evidence that this influenced Tom. The main mechanism appears to be direct conditioning. In a case study, it is important to consider alternative explanations but to base conclusions on the evidence collected.
8. Strengths and Weaknesses of This Case Study |
One strength is the richness of data. Combining interviews, observations and background reports provides a holistic view of Tom’s fear. This depth is impossible with large-scale surveys. The case study also allows for the exploration of unique details, such as the specific sound of the bark that triggered a panic attack.
However, a key weakness is low generalisability. Tom’s experience and his way of coping may not be the same as other children with dog phobias. Additionally, the psychologist’s interpretation may be subjective. Remember that in a case study, the researcher must be cautious about drawing cause-and-effect conclusions, as there is no experimental manipulation.
9. Ethical Considerations |
When a psychologist works with a child like Tom, ethical guidelines must be followed. Informed consent was obtained from Tom’s parents, and Tom himself gave assent after the study was explained in simple terms. Confidentiality is maintained: we do not use Tom’s real surname or school name. The psychologist also ensured that no procedures caused distress; for example, exposure to a real dog was not attempted without proper preparation.
Right to withdraw was respected: Tom was reminded he could stop any activity at any time. Debriefing is planned for the future, once Tom has overcome his fear, to explain how the data helped. Ethical practice is central to any psychological research in schools and clinics.
