Understand the basic building blocks of colour. With just red, blue, and yellow, you can create almost any hue. The formulas below show what happens when you mix two primary colours in equal amounts – these are the secondary colours.

Place LVP and RVP far apart to avoid distortion. All vertical lines remain strictly vertical. This system gives a realistic sense of space to cubes, buildings, and street scenes.

Applying the rule of thirds prevents static, bullseye-centred arrangements and leads the viewer’s eye through the artwork naturally. Break the rule only once you understand how it works.

10. Shape & Form – The 2D-to-3D Theorem | 形状与形体——二维转三维定理
Shape is a 2D enclosed area; form is its 3D counterpart. The transformation from shape to form follows a clear rule: add shading and shadow according to a light source. We call this the ‘light-and-shadow formula’.

Keep a single light-source direction for all objects in your composition. The side closest to the light gets the highlight; the opposite side gets the core shadow. A cast shadow anchors the form to the ground.

Creating the illusion of depth on a flat surface involves more than just perspective. Several strategies work together according to the ‘layering theorem’: overlap, size change, placement, and atmospheric perspective.

Overlap: object in front blocks part of object behind → depth cue

Placement: higher on the picture plane = farther away (in landscapes)
