1. What Is Psychology? |

Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behaviour. It is not just about reading people’s thoughts or sitting on a couch talking about dreams. Instead, psychologists use careful observations, experiments, and evidence to understand why we act, think, and feel the way we do. From why we forget things to why we help strangers, psychology seeks answers.

One fascinating aspect is that psychology covers many areas. Some psychologists focus on biological processes in the brain, while others study how groups influence us or how we develop from babies into adults. This diversity means there is something for everyone, making it an exciting subject to study at school.

2. The Scientific Approach in Psychology |

Unlike everyday opinions, psychology relies on the scientific method. Psychologists start with a question, form a hypothesis (a testable prediction), and then collect data to see if the hypothesis is supported. For example, a hypothesis might be ‘Students who sleep 8 hours perform better on memory tests than those who sleep 5 hours’.

By using controlled experiments and measurements, psychologists can rule out other explanations. This means we can have more confidence in the findings. Understanding this scientific approach will help you evaluate psychological claims you encounter in the media or everyday life.

3. Memory: How We Remember and Forget |

Memory is much more than a simple recording device. According to the multi-store model, information flows through three stages: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory holds very brief impressions, like the sight of a sparkler’s trail. If we pay attention, it moves to short-term memory (STM), which can hold about 7 items for around 15–30 seconds.

Rehearsal, such as repeating a phone number, can keep information in STM and help transfer it to long-term memory (LTM). LTM has a virtually unlimited capacity and can store memories for a lifetime. However, we still forget things, which can be caused by interference, decay, or retrieval failure. Classic studies, such as those by Peterson and Peterson, showed how quickly STM fades without rehearsal.

4. Social Influence: Conformity and Obedience |

Why do we sometimes change our behaviour to fit in with a group? This is called conformity. Solomon Asch conducted a famous experiment where participants were asked to match line lengths. When confederates (actors) unanimously gave a wrong answer, many real participants conformed and also gave the wrong answer, even though the correct answer was obvious. This showed the power of group pressure.

Obedience involves following orders from an authority figure. Stanley Milgram’s well-known study tested how far people would go in obeying instructions to give electric shocks to a ‘learner’. The results surprised the world: many ordinary people were willing to deliver what they believed were dangerous shocks simply because an experimenter told them to. Ethical questions from these studies are just as important today.

5. Attachment: Early Bonds and Later Life | 依恋:早期纽带与未来生活

Attachment is the strong emotional bond between an infant and their primary caregiver. John Bowlby suggested that this bond is crucial for survival and later emotional development. He believed that infants are born with an innate drive to seek closeness to caregivers, especially when frightened or upset.

Mary Ainsworth developed the ‘Strange Situation’ procedure to observe different attachment styles. She identified secure attachment, where infants are distressed when separated but easily comforted upon reunion, and insecure attachments, where responses are avoidant or resistant. Early attachment experiences can shape relationships into adolescence and beyond, a key topic in OCR Psychology.

6. Cognitive Development: Piaget’s Theory |

Jean Piaget proposed that children think differently from adults and progress through four distinct stages of cognitive development. The first stage, the sensorimotor stage (0–2 years), involves learning through senses and actions. A major milestone is object permanence — understanding that objects continue to exist even when out of sight.

In the preoperational stage (2–7 years), children use symbols and language but struggle with logic and seeing other viewpoints (egocentrism). The concrete operational stage (7–11 years) brings logical thinking about concrete objects, and conservation (understanding that quantity stays the same despite changes in appearance) develops. Finally, the formal operational stage (11+ years) allows abstract reasoning. As Year 7 students, you are beginning to develop this abstract thinking!

7. Research Methods: How Psychologists Investigate |

Psychologists use a range of methods to study behaviour. The table below summarises some key approaches you will encounter in Year 7 OCR Psychology.

The researcher manipulates an independent variable to measure its effect on a dependent variable, while controlling other factors.
Behaviour is watched and recorded in a natural or controlled setting. Can be overt (participants know) or covert (they do not).
A set of written questions given to many people to gather self-reported data on attitudes or behaviours. May use open or closed questions.
A conversation where the researcher asks questions. Can be structured, unstructured, or semi-structured.
An in-depth investigation of a single person, group, or event. Provides rich detail but may not generalise widely.

Each method has strengths and weaknesses. For instance, experiments give strong control over variables but may lack realism, whereas observations capture natural behaviour but can be affected by observer bias. Learning to evaluate methods is a critical skill.

8. Ethical Guidelines in Psychological Research |

When conducting research with humans or animals, psychologists must follow ethical guidelines. In the UK, the British Psychological Society (BPS) provides rules to protect participants. Key principles include:

  • Informed consent: Participants should know what the study involves and agree to take part.
  • Deception should be avoided, but if necessary, a full debrief must be given afterward.
  • Right to withdraw: Participants can leave the study at any time without penalty.
  • Confidentiality: Personal data must be kept private.
  • Protection from harm: Physical and psychological harm must be minimised.

As a psychology student, you will not only learn these rules but also discuss why they matter, especially when we look back at older studies that today would not be considered ethical.

9. Key Debate: Nature vs Nurture |

One of the oldest and most exciting debates in psychology is the nature versus nurture debate. The nature side argues that our behaviour is mainly determined by our genes and biology. For example, some researchers suggest intelligence or personality traits are inherited.

The nurture side emphasises the influence of the environment — our upbringing, culture, and experiences. A child who grows up in a multilingual home will speak multiple languages, not because of a ‘language gene’, but because of exposure and learning. Most psychologists today agree that both nature and nurture interact in complex ways to shape who we are. Throughout your course, you will be asked to consider where you stand on this debate for different topics.

10. Getting Ready for Year 7 Psychology |

To make the most of your Year 7 psychology course, keep a curious mind over the summer. Start a ‘psychology diary’ where you jot down interesting behaviours you observe — maybe how people queue, or how your younger sibling learns a new game. Ask yourself questions: Why did that happen? What might be the cause?

Familiarise yourself with basic terminology using simple online glossaries or age-appropriate psychology websites. You do not need to memorise anything; just getting comfortable with words like ‘experiment’, ‘hypothesis’, and ‘variable’ will help. Also, practising how to write clear explanations in your own words will support your coursework.

Finally, talk to family members about psychology topics you find interesting. Explaining ideas out loud is one of the best ways to deepen understanding. Your journey into the fascinating world of the mind is about to begin — enjoy every discovery!
