1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy literally means ‘love of wisdom’. It comes from the Greek words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom). Unlike subjects that focus on one area of knowledge, philosophy asks the most fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, morality, and the mind. It does not rely on experiments or observation alone; instead, philosophers use logic, reasoning, and debate to examine ideas carefully.

Philosophy can be divided into several branches. Metaphysics asks: ‘What is real?’ Epistemology asks: ‘What is knowledge and how do we acquire it?’ Ethics asks: ‘What is right and wrong?’ Logic studies the rules of valid reasoning, and aesthetics examines beauty and art. When you study OCR Philosophy, you begin to explore each of these areas and learn to think like a philosopher.

2. The Big Questions of Philosophy |

Philosophers are not satisfied with simple answers. They keep asking ‘why?’ until they reach the deepest layers of a problem. Some of the big questions you will encounter in Year 8 include: What is a person? Do we have free will? Can we trust our senses? Is there a God? What is justice? These questions have no single correct answer, and exploring different viewpoints is at the heart of doing philosophy.

Asking big questions helps you develop critical thinking. In OCR Philosophy, you will learn to spot assumptions, construct arguments, and evaluate evidence. You will also discover that many of these questions have been debated for thousands of years, and you are joining a long tradition of thinkers who seek understanding rather than easy answers.

3. Ancient Greek Philosophers: Socrates |

Socrates (470–399 BCE) is one of the founding figures of Western philosophy. He did not write books; instead, he spent his days in the marketplace of Athens asking people questions about justice, courage, and wisdom. His goal was not to win arguments but to help others examine their own beliefs and discover truth for themselves.

The Socratic method is a form of cooperative dialogue. Socrates would ask a simple question like ‘What is justice?’ When someone gave an answer, he would ask further questions to test whether the definition held up. Often this revealed contradictions, showing that the person did not truly understand the concept. This process is known as ‘Socratic irony’ and it is still used in classrooms today to deepen understanding.

4. Plato and the Theory of Forms |

Plato was a student of Socrates and wrote many dialogues featuring his teacher. He developed the Theory of Forms, which says that the physical world we see around us is only a shadow of a higher, more real world of perfect Forms or Ideas. For example, every beautiful object in our world is beautiful because it participates in the Form of Beauty, which is perfect and unchanging.

Plato’s famous Allegory of the Cave illustrates this idea. Prisoners are chained in a cave, seeing only shadows on the wall and believing them to be reality. When one prisoner escapes and sees the sun, he realises the shadows are mere copies. The escaped prisoner represents the philosopher, who seeks true knowledge beyond appearances. This allegory helps young philosophers think about the difference between appearance and reality.

5. Aristotle and Empiricism |

Aristotle was Plato’s student, but he disagreed with his teacher on many points. Instead of believing that true reality is in a separate world of Forms, Aristotle argued that we must study the world we experience through our senses. He believed that knowledge begins with observation, and by examining particular things we can understand their essence or purpose. This approach is known as empiricism.

Aristotle’s emphasis on evidence and classification influenced the development of science. He taught that everything has a ‘telos’ – a final purpose. For example, an acorn’s purpose is to become an oak tree. In OCR Philosophy, comparing Plato’s rationalism with Aristotle’s empiricism helps you see two contrasting ways of thinking about knowledge and reality that still shape debates today.

6. What is Reality? Metaphysics for Beginners |

Metaphysics is the branch of philosophy that deals with the nature of reality. It asks: What exists? Is the world entirely physical, or are there non-physical things like minds or souls? Two major positions are materialism (the view that only physical matter exists) and dualism (the view that both physical and non-physical things exist). Most young philosophers find the mind-body problem especially fascinating.

Another key metaphysical question is whether the world is as we perceive it. Our senses can be deceived: optical illusions show that we do not always see things as they are. Philosophers like René Descartes asked whether we can ever be certain that an external world exists. These questions encourage you to doubt your assumptions and look for solid foundations for knowledge.

7. How Do We Know Things? Epistemology |

Epistemology is the study of knowledge. In Year 8, you learn to distinguish between knowledge, belief, and opinion. For something to count as knowledge, philosophers often say it must be a justified true belief. That means you must believe it, it must be true, and you must have good reasons or evidence for believing it.

Two great traditions in epistemology are rationalism and empiricism. Rationalists, like Plato and Descartes, argue that reason is the primary source of knowledge; some ideas are innate. Empiricists, like Aristotle and John Locke, claim that all knowledge comes from sensory experience. You will be asked to consider which view is more convincing and to give examples that support each side.

8. Ethics: What is Right and Wrong? |

Ethics is the branch of philosophy that examines moral values and rules. You will encounter two important approaches: absolutism and relativism. Absolutism holds that certain actions are always right or always wrong, regardless of circumstances. For example, an absolutist might say that lying is always morally wrong. Relativism argues that what is right or wrong depends on the culture, situation, or individual.

In OCR Philosophy, you also begin to explore ethical theories such as utilitarianism, which says the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number, and Kantian ethics, which focuses on duty and universal rules. By applying these theories to real-life dilemmas, you learn how abstract principles can guide practical decisions.

9. Moral Dilemmas: The Trolley Problem |

The Trolley Problem is a classic thought experiment in ethics. Imagine a runaway trolley is heading toward five people tied to the track. You can pull a lever to divert the trolley onto another track, but one person is tied there. Is it morally right to pull the lever? Utilitarians would argue it is, because saving five lives produces more happiness than saving one. Others disagree, saying that deliberately choosing to sacrifice one person is wrong.

This dilemma helps you see the tension between thinking about consequences and thinking about duties. Variations of the problem, such as pushing a large man off a bridge to stop the trolley, raise even deeper questions about action, intention, and moral responsibility. Discussing the Trolley Problem in class is a great way to practise constructing ethical arguments.

10. Free Will vs. Determinism |

Do we genuinely choose our actions, or are they determined by forces beyond our control? Determinism is the view that every event, including human choices, is caused by previous events in accordance with fixed laws. If determinism is true, then free will seems to be an illusion. Libertarianism (in philosophy) holds that we do have free will, and that some choices are not determined by prior causes.

Most young people find this debate challenging because it touches on personal responsibility and morality. If our actions are determined, can we be held responsible for them? Compatibilism tries to find a middle ground, arguing that free will and determinism can coexist if we define free will as acting according to one’s own desires without external coercion. Reflecting on these ideas helps you think about what it means to be human.

11. Philosophy of Religion: Does God Exist? |

Philosophy of religion examines arguments for and against belief in God. Two traditional arguments for God’s existence are the Design Argument and the Cosmological Argument. The Design Argument (also called the Teleological Argument) claims that the universe shows evidence of design, like a watch implies a watchmaker; therefore, a designer God must exist.

The Cosmological Argument says that everything has a cause, and there cannot be an infinite chain of causes; therefore, there must be a first cause, which is God. Critics, such as David Hume and Immanuel Kant, have offered counter-arguments, pointing out flaws in both arguments. You will learn that philosophy respects both belief and scepticism, and that it is possible to analyse these arguments without taking sides.

12. Revision and Exam Tips for OCR Philosophy | OCR

To succeed in Year 8 OCR Philosophy, you need to do more than memorise facts. You must show that you can explain ideas clearly, compare different viewpoints, and present reasoned conclusions. Practise writing short paragraphs that follow the PEE structure: Point, Evidence (or example), and Explanation. For instance, ‘Plato believed in Forms (Point). In the Allegory of the Cave, the shadows represent imperfect copies (Evidence). This shows how everyday reality is less real than the world of Forms (Explanation).’

Use key philosophical vocabulary correctly. Terms like ‘absolute’, ‘relative’, ‘rationalism’, ’empiricism’, ‘utilitarianism’, and ‘determinism’ should appear in your answers when relevant. Create mind maps linking philosophers to their key ideas. When revising, practise answering big questions aloud, and always ask yourself: What reasons support this view? What might an opponent say? How would I reply? This habit is the very essence of philosophy.
