📚 Key Skills for Psychology Practical Assessments |

In Year 8 Cambridge Psychology, practical assessments require you to design, conduct, and evaluate simple experiments. This article highlights the key skills and knowledge you need to demonstrate when tackling an investigation task, helping you to maximise your marks and think like a budding psychologist.

1. Understanding Variables |

Every experiment involves variables. The independent variable (IV) is the factor you change or manipulate. The dependent variable (DV) is the factor you measure. Extraneous variables are other factors that could affect the DV and must be controlled so that you can be confident the IV caused any change in the DV.

  • Example: In an experiment to see if background music affects concentration on a puzzletask, the IV is the presence or absence of music, and the DV is the time taken to complete the puzzle. Extraneous variables might include temperature, noise from outside, or hunger.

2. Experimental Designs |

You need to understand basic experimental designs. In an independent groups design, different participants are used in each condition of the IV. In a repeated measures design, the same participants take part in all conditions. Each design has strengths and limitations.

  • Independent groups: avoids order effects (e.g. practice or boredom) but needs more participants and may be affected by individual differences between groups.
  • Repeated measures: fewer participants needed and controls for individual differences, but participants may show order effects, so counterbalancing is often used.

3. Writing Hypotheses |

A hypothesis is a clear, testable prediction. It should state the expected relationship between the IV and DV. Hypotheses can be directional (one-tailed), predicting the direction of the result, or non-directional (two-tailed), simply stating there will be a difference without specifying which direction.

  • Directional: ‘Participants who listen to music will complete the puzzle faster than those in silence.’
  • Non-directional: ‘There will be a difference in puzzle completion times between participants who listen to music and those who work in silence.’

4. Standardised Procedures |

To ensure reliability, you must use a standardised procedure, meaning you keep everything the same for all participants except the IV. Write clear step-by-step instructions and use the same materials, timing, and setting. This allows another researcher to replicate your study.

  • Include details like the exact puzzle used, the duration of music, volume level, and the wording of instructions given to participants.

5. Data Collection Methods |

Psychologists collect data through various means. Observations involve recording behaviour using tally charts or rating scales. Self-report methods include questionnaires and interviews, where participants answer questions. For practical assessments, you may combine observation with measurement of the DV.

  • In the puzzle experiment, you could measure completion time (a quantitative measure) and also observe signs of fidgeting or talkin(s)

6. Descriptive Statistics |

Once you have your data, you need to summarise it. Measures of central tendency include the mean (the average), median (the middle value), and mode (the most frequent). Measures of spread, such as the range (highest minus lowest), tell you about variability. For Year 8, you often calculate the mean and range.

Mean = (Sum of all scores) ÷ (Number of scores)

  • Example: music condition times: 45s, 50s, 42s. Mean = (45+50+42)÷3 = 45.7s. Range = 50 − 42 = 8s.

7. Presenting Data Graphically |

Graphs make data easier to understand. A bar chart is suitable for comparing the mean DV scores across different conditions of the IV. A line graph can show changes over time or when the IV is continuous. Always label axes, give the graph a title, and plot accurately.

  • For the puzzle experiment, a bar chart comparing mean completion times for ‘Music’ and ‘No Music’ conditions is ideal.

8. Ethical Considerations |

Psychological research must follow ethical guidelines. You need to obtain informed consent from participants (and parents/carers if under 16). Explain that they can withdraw at any time without penalty. Protect their anonymity and ensure no harm comes to them. After the study, provide a debrief.

  • In a puzzle experiment, ensure the task is not frustrating beyond what is normal, and let participants know the purpose afterwards.

9. Evaluating the Experiment |

After concluding, reflect on your experiment. Consider reliability: would repeating the experiment yield consistent results? Consider validity: did you measure what you intended to? Identify possible extraneous variables that weren’t fully controlled and suggest realistic improvements.

  • Example issue: some participants may have already practiced the puzzle. Improvement: use a puzzle all participants will be unfamiliar with.

10. Drawing Conclusions |

Your conclusion should state whether the results support the hypothesis, referring back to the data. Do not say you have ‘proven’ anything; instead, use language like ‘the results suggest…’ or ‘this experiment provides some evidence that…’ Mention any limitations that might weaken your conclusion.

  • ‘The mean time in the music condition was 45s compared to 58s in the silent condition. This supports the hypothesis that music improves puzzle speed, but the small sample size means we should be cautious.’
