1. Erosion, Transportation and Deposition |

Rivers and coasts shape the land through three linked processes. Erosion wears away rock, transportation moves the broken pieces, and deposition drops them. Think of the acronym ETD – ‘Eat, Travel, Drop’ – just like a monster chewing rocks, carrying them downstream, and spitting them out.

Within erosion, remember the four specific methods with AACH: Abrasion (sandpaper effect), Attrition (rocks hit each other), Corrosion (acid in water dissolves rock), and Hydraulic action (force of water). Picture ‘AACH’ as a cough – a sudden force, just like water hitting the banks.

Transportation methods form SSTT: Suspension (fine particles floating), Solution (dissolved minerals), Saltation (bouncing pebbles), and Traction (rolling boulders). Visualise a ‘salty tractor’ bouncing along – Saltation and Traction come alive.

2. Weathering vs Erosion |

Many students confuse weathering with erosion. Weathering is the breakdown of rock in situ – it stays put. Erosion involves movement. Link ‘W’ for weathering to ‘worn where it is’, and ‘E’ for erosion to ‘escape’. Think of a biscuit crumbling on a plate (weathering) versus someone sweeping the crumbs away (erosion).

把风化的 ‘W’ 联想成“就位磨损”(worn where it is),侵蚀的 ‘E’ 联想成“逃离”(escape)。

Biological, chemical and physical weathering can be recalled with BCP: Bugs (living organisms), Chemicals (acid rain), and Physical (freeze-thaw). If you see a cracked rock with no sign of movement, say weathering.

3. Longitude and Latitude |

Mix up latitude and longitude? Picture a ladder: the rungs go horizontally around Earth – that is latitude (ladder-tude). Longitude lines run from pole to pole, making them ‘long’ up and down. Another trick: ‘Lat is fat’ – the parallel lines spread wide around the globe.

Key lines include the Equator (0° latitude), Tropic of Cancer (23.5°N), Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°S), and the Prime Meridian (0° longitude). Use the phrase ‘Cancer is North, Capricorn is South’ – the ‘C’ words mirror each other.

4. Scale on Maps |

Map scale shows the relationship between a distance on paper and the real world. The three types are WSF: Word (e.g., ‘1 cm represents 1 km’), Scale line (a ruler-like bar), and Fraction (1:50 000). Memorise ‘Wise Scale Friend’ as your WSF helper.

When using a 1:50 000 map, every 1 cm on the map equals 500 m on the ground. Turn the fraction into a metric conversion: 50 000 cm is 500 m, then 1 km is 1 000 m, so 2 cm is 1 km. This ‘half-kilo’ per cm rule saves time.

5. Sustainable Development |

Sustainability means meeting our needs without harming future generations. It balances three pillars: Society, Economy, and Environment – SEE. Think of a three-legged stool: if one leg is weak, the whole thing wobbles. ‘SEE the future’ reminds you to check all three.

Examples of sustainable actions include using solar power (environmental benefit, economic long-term saving, social acceptance through green jobs). Whenever you write an evaluation, ‘SEE’ ensures you don’t miss a dimension.

6. Push and Pull Factors |

In migration studies, push factors drive people away from a place, while pull factors attract them to a new one. Remember: Push = Problems, Pull = Pleasures. War, unemployment, and natural disasters push; jobs, safety, and better services pull.

Link this to the letter ‘P’ – both Push and Problems begin with P, and Pull and Pleasures also share a P. Picture a door marked ‘Problems’ at the back and a sign ‘Pleasures’ ahead; people move from one to the other.

7. Primary, Secondary, Tertiary Sectors |

Economic activities split into three sectors. Primary extracts raw materials (farming, fishing), secondary manufactures goods (factories, construction), and tertiary provides services (teachers, shops). Use the mnemonic PST: ‘People Start Transforming’ – Primary, Secondary, Tertiary.

Think of a tree (primary) becoming a chair (secondary) sold in a furniture store (tertiary). To check understanding, ask: ‘Am I taking, making, or serving?’

8. Climate Zones | 气候带

Global climate zones range from tropical near the Equator, through temperate in mid-latitudes, to cold at the poles. Remember TTC – Tropical, Temperate, Cold. It sounds like ‘tick-tock-clock’, moving from hot to cold as time ticks from equator to poles.

Precipitation and temperature graphs help identify zones. A tropical climate is hot and wet all year; temperate shows seasonal variation; cold zones have short summers. Sketch a simple ‘TTC strip’ on your page and shade it from red (hot) to blue (cold).

9. Hydrological Cycle |

The water cycle contains key processes: Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Infiltration, Run-off. Rearrange them into a silly story: ‘Every Cat Prefers Ice-cream Regularly’. E = Evaporation, C = Condensation, P = Precipitation, I = Infiltration, R = Run-off. Say it three times and you have the sequence.

Transpiration from plants is sometimes included. If so, expand the story to ‘Every Cat Prefers Ice-cream Regularly, Thank-you’ – T for Transpiration. Remember that infiltration refills underground aquifers, while run-off returns water to seas.

10. Plate Tectonics |

Earth’s crust is broken into plates that move. Boundaries are Convergent (come together, collide), Divergent (divide, move apart), and Transform (slide past). Link ‘Con-‘ with ‘collide’, ‘Di-‘ with ‘divide’, and ‘Trans-‘ with ‘transport sideways’.

Picture a car crash (convergent), a zip opening (divergent), and a sliding glass door (transform). These images will help you instantly identify boundary types in a diagram-based question.

11. Population Density and Distribution |

Density tells ‘how many’ people live in a given area, normally expressed as people per km². Distribution describes ‘where’ people live – clustered, linear, dispersed. Use Dens = Dots per area and Distrib = Where the dots sit. One is counting, the other is describing patterns.

High population density occurs in cities and fertile plains; sparse distribution is typical of deserts and mountains. On a map, dense areas look crowded with symbols, while sparse areas have lots of white space.

12. Renewable and Non-renewable Resources |

Renewable resources regenerate on a human timescale (solar, wind, biomass). Non-renewable resources are finite and take millions of years to form (coal, oil, natural gas). Think of Renewable as Regularly available and Non-renewable as Never again once used.

Beware: some resources seem renewable but are only sustainable if managed carefully, such as wood or fish stocks. These are sometimes called ‘potentially renewable’. Link care with sustainability – ‘Use it, but don’t use it up.’
