The Year 9 OCR Philosophy course introduces students to core philosophical questions about existence, knowledge, ethics, and the divine. Analysing past papers is one of the most effective ways to understand what examiners look for, how to structure answers, and how to apply philosophical ideas to unfamiliar scenarios. This guide offers a topic-by-topic breakdown of recurring question styles while providing bilingual commentary to support both English and Chinese learners. By examining real exam patterns, we will explore how to move beyond simple description towards critical evaluation, a skill that marks the difference between a pass and a top grade.

Year 9 OCR

1. Understanding the OCR Philosophy Question Types | 理解OCR哲学题型

OCR philosophy papers typically feature a mix of short-answer knowledge questions, explanation questions, and extended evaluation essays. Short questions might ask you to ‘state’ or ‘define’ a key term, such as ‘omnipotence’ or ‘utilitarianism’. These test recall and precision, awarding one or two marks for a clear, concise definition. A common pitfall is writing too much for a one-mark question, wasting time that could be used for higher-tariff tasks.

Explanation questions, often worth 5–8 marks, demand that you show how a philosophical argument works. For example, ‘Explain the design argument for the existence of God.’ Here you must outline the reasoning step by step, using examples such as the watchmaker analogy. Marks are awarded for accurate detail, logical order, and correct use of specialist vocabulary like ‘teleology’ or ‘analogy’.

Evaluation essays are the highest-scoring section, often worth 15–30 marks. You are expected to present a balanced discussion, considering strengths and weaknesses of an argument before reaching a justified conclusion. Crucially, OCR examiners reward students who engage with counterarguments and who can weigh up religious, scientific, and secular perspectives. A strong essay does not just list points but connects them in a critical thread.

2. Evaluating Arguments: The Design Argument |

The design argument, or teleological argument, claims that the order and complexity of the natural world point to an intelligent designer – God. In OCR past papers, this topic appears repeatedly, often with questions asking you to explain Paley’s watchmaker analogy or to evaluate the argument’s strengths and weaknesses.

William Paley argued that if you found a watch on a heath, you would infer a watchmaker because its intricate parts work together for a purpose. Similarly, the universe shows far greater complexity, with things like the human eye exhibiting purposeful arrangement. Therefore, a divine designer must exist.

However, critics point to the problem of natural evil and imperfections. David Hume, in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, questioned the analogy: the universe is not like a machine because we only experience one universe and cannot compare its design to anything else. Moreover, even if a designer exists, it does not prove the designer is the God of classical theism. The argument could equally suggest multiple gods or an imperfect craftsman.

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection offers a powerful alternative explanation. Complex organisms can arise gradually through random variations and environmental filtering without the need for a designer. Although some theists accept evolution as God’s mechanism, the design argument loses its force as a standalone proof.

In a typical evaluation essay, you should not dismiss the argument entirely. Recognise its emotional appeal and its alignment with the human tendency to seek purpose. Then balance this with the logical criticisms, ultimately concluding that while the design argument is intuitively attractive, it is not logically rigorous enough to compel belief.

3. The Problem of Evil and Suffering |

The problem of evil is one of the most challenging topics in OCR philosophy, frequently tested through both short questions and essays. It asks: if God is all-powerful, all-knowing, and all-good, why does evil exist? The logical form of the problem suggests that such a God and the existence of evil are logically incompatible, while the evidential form argues that the sheer amount and distribution of suffering make God’s existence improbable.

Past papers often ask students to outline the difference between moral evil (caused by human free will, such as murder) and natural evil (caused by nature, such as earthquakes). Be precise in definitions: moral evil stems from human choices, while natural evil arises from physical processes seemingly unrelated to human agency.

Common theodicies appear in exam answers. Augustine’s theodicy argues that evil is not a substance but a privation of good, caused by the fall of angels and humans. God allows evil because a world with free will is better than one without. Irenaeus’s theodicy sees evil as a tool for soul-making, allowing humans to grow morally and spiritually towards God’s likeness.

However, each theodicy faces challenges. If free will is so valuable, why doesn’t God prevent extreme suffering that crushes freedom? The soul-making theodicy struggles to explain the suffering of infants or animals who have no opportunity for moral growth. Exam markers look for this critical engagement, not mere description of theodices.

For high marks, discuss the evidential problem through examples like the Holocaust or the 2004 tsunami. Show that the volume of seemingly pointless suffering challenges the idea of a loving, powerful God. A balanced conclusion might recognise that while the problem of evil does not disprove God, it makes traditional theism intellectually costly.

4. Life After Death: Philosophical Perspectives |

OCR philosophy often tests the concept of life after death, asking whether personal identity can survive bodily death. Key theories include resurrection, reincarnation, and the immortality of the soul. Past paper questions frequently ask for comparisons between dualist and materialist views.

Dualism, associated with Plato and Descartes, holds that the mind or soul is a distinct substance separable from the physical body. Plato argued that the soul exists before birth, is the source of knowledge, and returns to the realm of Forms after death. This view supports the notion of an afterlife where the soul continues independently.

In contrast, materialism argues that mental states are brain states. When the brain dies, consciousness ceases. John Hick’s replica theory offers a middle ground, suggesting that God could recreate an exact replica of a person in a new spiritual body, preserving personal identity through continuity of memory and character. This avoids problems of soul-body interaction while allowing resurrection.

OCR questions may ask you to evaluate whether near-death experiences provide evidence for an afterlife. Critics argue NDEs can be explained by oxygen deprivation, drugs, or psychological expectation. Supporters claim that consistent reports across cultures hint at a transcendent reality. You should weigh both sides, noting that correlation is not causation.

A high-level answer will link this topic to the problem of evil or the nature of God, demonstrating how beliefs about afterlife affect the overall coherence of theistic belief. For instance, without afterlife, the justice of God in the face of earthly injustice becomes harder to defend.

5. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism vs. Kantian Ethics |

Ethics is a major component of OCR philosophy. You must be able to explain and evaluate two contrasting theories, often utilitarianism and Kantian ethics. Exam questions may ask you to apply these theories to a specific moral dilemma, such as lying to save a life or allocating scarce medical resources.

Utilitarianism, developed by Bentham and Mill, holds that the right action is the one that maximises overall happiness or pleasure and minimises pain. Bentham’s hedonic calculus quantifies pleasure based on intensity, duration, certainty, and extent. Mill introduced higher and lower pleasures, arguing that intellectual pleasures are superior. A key exam tip is to distinguish between act utilitarianism (judge each act individually) and rule utilitarianism (follow rules that generally maximise happiness).

Critics say utilitarianism can justify immoral acts if they produce greater happiness, such as punishing an innocent person to pacify a mob. It also ignores the separateness of persons, treating individuals as mere containers of pleasure. In past paper evaluations, these objections carry significant weight.

Kantian ethics is deontological, focusing on duty and the intention behind an act, not its consequences. The categorical imperative requires that you act only according to maxims that you could will to become universal law, and that you treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means. This avoids the problem of instrumentalising people.

Kant’s theory faces the objection of rigidity. If a murderer asks where your friend is, Kant seems committed to telling the truth because lying cannot be universalised. Many find this counterintuitive. Exam essays should acknowledge such difficulties while recognising Kant’s profound respect for human dignity.

6. The Nature of God: Omnipotence and Benevolence |

The classical theistic concept of God includes the attributes of omnipotence (all-powerful), omniscience (all-knowing), and omnibenevolence (all-good). OCR questions often probe the coherence of these attributes, especially when considered together. Can an omnipotent being create a stone so heavy it cannot lift it? This paradox challenges the logical possibility of omnipotence.

One solution is to define omnipotence as the power to do anything that is logically possible. Creating a stone that an omnipotent being cannot lift is logically absurd, so not a failure of power. Similarly, God cannot sin because sin is incompatible with perfect goodness, not due to a lack of power.

The problem of divine foreknowledge and free will is another recurrent exam theme. If God knows everything you will do before you do it, it seems you cannot do otherwise, thus you lack genuine free will. Some philosophers argue that knowledge does not cause the action; just as I know what a friend will order in a familiar restaurant, my knowledge does not force her choice.

The compatibility of divine goodness with eternal punishment is another tension. If God is all-loving, how can he send people to hell forever? Universalists claim all will eventually be saved. Others argue that hell is self-chosen exclusion from God. Present these viewpoints in a balanced evaluation.

When tackling such questions, use precise terminology: ‘intrinsic maximum’, ‘middle knowledge’, and ‘libertarian free will’. Demonstrate your understanding that these are live philosophical debates, not merely scriptural puzzles.

7. The Cosmological Argument: First Cause |

The cosmological argument moves from the existence of the universe to the existence of God as its first cause or necessary foundation. Aquinas’s ‘Third Way’ is a staple of OCR papers. It argues that contingent beings exist, not everything can be contingent, therefore a necessary being exists. This argument requires careful explanation of contingency and necessity.

Past paper marks are often lost by confusing the cosmological argument with the design argument. Remember: the cosmological argument focuses on causal chains and the need for a terminus, not on order or complexity. The Kalam version, popularised by William Lane Craig, argues that the universe began to exist, and whatever begins to exist has a cause, so the universe has a cause which is God.

David Hume and Bertrand Russell raised the objection: why must the chain stop at God? Maybe the universe itself is the necessary being, or it has an infinite regress of causes. Russell claimed that the universe is ‘just there, and that’s all’. The principle of sufficient reason, which underpins the argument, may not hold universally.

A strength often credited in exams is that the cosmological argument aligns with common intuition: things do not pop into existence uncaused. But quantum physics suggests that at the subatomic level, particles can appear without discernible cause. This scientific point, if used precisely, enriches an evaluation.

Note that OCR examiners appreciate interdisciplinary references. You can mention that the Big Bang theory gives a temporal starting point but does not resolve the question of why there is something rather than nothing.

8. Science and Religion: Conflict or Dialogue? |

The relationship between science and religion is a common topic in OCR philosophy, often examined through the lens of creation accounts, evolution, and the scientific method. You may face questions asking whether science has made religion redundant or whether they can coexist harmoniously.

The conflict thesis argues that science and religion make incompatible claims about the world. Literal interpretations of Genesis contradict the fossil record and genetic evidence for evolution. Richard Dawkins asserts that evolution by natural selection makes belief in a designer implausible. Scientific explanations seem to close the gaps once occupied by God.

However, the dialogue model suggests science and religion address different questions. Science explains the ‘how’ of the physical world, while religion addresses the ‘why’ of meaning and purpose. Stephen Jay Gould’s NOMA (Non-Overlapping Magisteria) proposes that science and religion are distinct domains that do not conflict. Many religious scientists, such as Francis Collins, hold that understanding genetics deepens their awe for God’s creative wisdom.

OCR essays can be structured around key case studies: the Galileo affair, Darwin’s reception, and modern debates on intelligent design. Show historical awareness that concord is possible but tension persists when religions make empirical claims. The Catholic Church, for example, now accepts evolution as more than a hypothesis.

Your conclusion might argue that conflict is not inevitable, but requires both sides to respect the limits of their methods. Scientists must avoid claiming that only the physical is real, while religious believers should not use sacred texts as scientific textbooks.

9. Miracles: Definition and Challenges |

Miracles are a popular topic in OCR philosophy. A common question asks you to define ‘miracle’. St. Thomas Aquinas defined a miracle as an event caused by God that goes beyond the ordinary powers of nature. David Hume defined a miracle as ‘a violation of the laws of nature’. The difference matters: Aquinas’s definition allows for extraordinary events that are still lawful; Hume’s definition sets up a direct clash with science.

Hume’s challenge to belief in miracles is often the focus of evaluation essays. He argued that it is always more probable that the testimony is mistaken than that a law of nature has been violated. His criteria for assessing miracle testimonies include: the witnesses must be credible, educated, and free from emotional bias, and the event must be publicly observed. Apply these criteria to specific biblical miracles or modern claims.

Critics of Hume argue that his definition of miracles as violations of natural laws already prejudices the case. If one defines a miracle as a divinely caused extraordinary event within nature, then the conflict with science is less sharp. Moreover, the uniformity of nature that Hume presupposes may be exactly what is in question when one claims a miracle.

Another angle is the theological significance of miracles. In the Bible, miracles are ‘signs’ that reveal God’s character and purpose, not just spectacular events. The resurrection of Jesus is the central miracle of Christianity. Past papers may ask you to discuss whether the resurrection can be evaluated historically or only by faith.

Include a table in your revision notes comparing Humean and theistic perspectives on miracles. Such organisation helps structure exam answers quickly.

Reliable if God’s purpose is clear
Warranted within a theistic worldview

10. Exam Technique: Structuring a High-Scoring Answer |

Excellent exam technique can elevate a B-grade answer to an A*. Start by reading the question twice, underlining command words like ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’, or ‘to what extent’. A common mistake is to write descriptively when evaluation is required. Plan your response for two minutes: jot down key points, counterarguments, and a provisional conclusion.

For explanation questions, use the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence or Example, Explain how the point answers the question, Link back to the question. For instance, when explaining the design argument: Point – Paley’s watchmaker analogy; Evidence – describe the watch and its parts; Explain – analogy to the universe; Link – this shows purpose implies design.

Evaluation essays should follow an integrated structure, not a ‘for and against’ list. Introduce the debate, present the first argument with its counterargument, then the second, and so on. Every paragraph should contribute to a developing judgement. Use signposting language: ‘A strength of this argument is…’, ‘However, a significant objection is…’, ‘On balance…’

OCR mark schemes reward precise terminology. Use words like ‘analogy’, ‘contingent’, ‘a posteriori’, ‘a priori’, ‘inductive’, ‘deontological’. But never drop jargon without explanation. Define terms concisely to show understanding. Also, reference specific philosophers by name and, where possible, by their key works, e.g., ‘Hume’s Enquiry‘ or ‘Mill’s Utilitarianism‘.

Manage your time carefully. For a 60-minute paper with 50 marks, allocate roughly 1.2 minutes per mark. So a 15-mark evaluative essay should take about 18-20 minutes. Leave three minutes at the end to review spelling of philosophical terms and clarity of argument.

Finally, practice with real past papers under timed conditions. Self-mark using official mark schemes, noting the specific points where you missed out. Over time, you will internalise the examiner’s expectations and produce answers that are concise, critical, and analytically sharp.
