Media Theories and Formulas Quick Reference Handbook | 媒体公式定理速查手册

📚 Media Theories and Formulas Quick Reference Handbook | 媒体公式定理速查手册

This handbook brings together the essential theories, concepts and structural ‘formulas’ that underpin AQA GCSE Media Studies. Designed for Year 9 revision, it presents key frameworks for analysing media language, representation, audience and industry in paired English‑Chinese explanations. Use it to decode texts, spot patterns and write convincing exam responses.

本手册汇集了支撑 AQA 普通中等教育证书媒体研究的基本理论、概念与结构性‘公式’。为九年级复习设计,以中英对照方式呈现分析媒体语言、表征、受众与产业的核心框架。用它来解码文本、发现模式并写出有说服力的考试答案。

1. Semiotics: The Science of Signs | 符号学:符号的科学

Semiotics is the study of how meaning is created through signs. A sign is anything that stands for something else. It consists of two inseparable parts: the signifier – the physical form (a word, image or sound) – and the signified – the mental concept it triggers. In media texts, producers carefully select signifiers to anchor preferred meanings.

符号学研究符号如何产生意义。符号是代表他物的任何事物。它由不可分割的两部分组成:能指 —— 物理形式(词语、图像或声音)—— 以及所指 —— 它触发的心智概念。在媒体文本中,制作者精心选择能指来锚定首选意义。

Sign = Signifier + Signified

符号 = 能指 + 所指

2. Todorov’s Narrative Formula | 托多罗夫叙事公式

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narratives follow a five‑stage pattern moving from stability through disruption to a new equilibrium. This formula helps analysts identify the underlying structure of a story, whether it is a film, a news report or an advertisement. The stages represent a complete journey from order to restored (or altered) order.

茨维坦·托多罗夫提出了大多数叙事遵循的五阶段模式,从稳定到打破再到新的平衡。这个公式帮助分析者识别故事的基本结构,无论是电影、新闻报道还是广告。这些阶段代表从秩序到恢复(或改变)的完整旅程。

Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium

平衡 → 打破平衡 → 认识打破 → 尝试修复 → 新平衡

3. Propp’s Character Archetypes | 普罗普角色原型

Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character roles (or spheres of action). While not every narrative uses all of them, these archetypes offer a powerful toolkit for discussing characters’ functions in media products. A single character can fulfil more than one role.

弗拉基米尔·普罗普分析了俄罗斯民间故事并识别出七种反复出现的角色(或行动范畴)。虽然不是每个叙事都会全部使用,但这些原型为讨论媒体产品中角色的功能提供了强大工具。一个角色可以承担不止一种功能。

  • Hero – The protagonist who undertakes a quest and often restores equilibrium.

    英雄 – 承担征程并常恢复平衡的主角。

  • Villain – Opposes the hero and creates disruption.

    恶棍 – 与英雄作对并制造混乱。

  • Princess – A sought‑after figure (can be a person or an object) and a reward for the hero.

    公主 – 被追寻的角色(可为人或物),也是英雄的奖赏。

  • Dispatcher – Sends the hero on the mission.

    派遣者 – 派遣英雄出征。

  • Donor – Provides the hero with a magical object or vital knowledge.

    捐赠者 – 为英雄提供魔法物品或关键知识。

  • Helper – Assists the hero during the quest.

    帮手 – 在征程中协助英雄。

  • False Hero – Appears good but turns out to be fraudulent or claims the reward unjustly.

    假英雄 – 表面善良,实际欺骗或不当索取奖赏。

4. Barthes’ Codes: Enigma and Action | 巴特的符号:谜题与行动

Roland Barthes suggested that narratives are woven from several codes. Two of the most accessible for media study are the enigma code and the action code. The enigma code sets up puzzles that the audience wants resolved, creating suspense. The action code refers to events that drive the plot forward sequentially, where one action leads logically to the next.

罗兰·巴特提出叙事由若干符码编织而成。对媒体研究最易上手的两个是谜题符码行动符码。谜题符码设置观众迫切希望解开的迷题,制造悬念。行动符码指以序列方式推动情节的事件,一个行动合逻辑地导向下一个。

Enigma Code → Puzzle, Mystery, Suspense

谜题符码 → 迷题、神秘、悬念

Action Code → Sequential Events → Progression of Plot

行动符码 → 序列事件 → 情节推进

5. Levi-Strauss and Binary Oppositions | 列维-斯特劳斯与二元对立

Claude Levi-Strauss argued that meaning in narratives is constructed through binary oppositions – a conflict between two opposing forces or qualities. By examining these pairs, we can uncover the value system a text is promoting. Examples include good vs. evil, civilisation vs. wilderness, past vs. future, and human vs. technology.

克劳德·列维-斯特劳斯主张叙事中的意义通过二元对立—— 两种相反力量或性质的冲突 —— 来构建。通过审视这些配对,我们可以揭示文本所倡导的价值体系。例子包括善与恶、文明与荒野、过去与未来、人类与科技。

Good ↔ Evil | Order ↔ Chaos | Known ↔ Unknown

善 ↔ 恶 | 秩序 ↔ 混乱 | 已知 ↔ 未知

6. Representation and Stereotypes | 表征与刻板印象

Representation is the way media re‑presents reality – it is never a simple reflection. Producers select and construct images and narratives to create meaning. A stereotype is a simplified, repetitive representation that reduces a group to a few exaggerated traits. While stereotypes can be negative, they are sometimes used for quick character recognition; counter‑stereotypes challenge typical expectations.

表征是媒体再现现实的方式 —— 它从来不是简单的反映。制作者选择并建构图像与叙事来创造意义。刻板印象是一种简化、重复的表征,将某个群体缩减为几个夸张的特征。虽然刻板印象可能是消极的,它们有时被用来快速识别角色;反刻板印象挑战惯常预期。

Representation = Selection + Construction + Mediation

表征 = 挑选 + 建构 + 中介

7. Audience Theories: Uses and Gratifications | 受众理论:使用与满足

The uses and gratifications model treats audiences as active users who select media to meet specific needs. Instead of asking ‘What does media do to people?’, it asks ‘What do people do with media?’. The four main categories of need are surveillance, personal identity, social integration and entertainment. In an exam answer, you can apply these to explain why an audience might choose a particular website or show.

使用与满足模型将受众视作为满足特定需求而主动选择媒体的使用者。它不再问‘媒体对人做了什么’,而是问‘人们用媒体做什么’。四个主要需求类别是信息监测、个人身份、社会整合与娱乐。在考试答案中,你可以运用它们来解释受众为什么选择某个网站或节目。

  • Information (Surveillance) – seeking knowledge about the world.

    信息(监测) – 寻求关于世界的知识。

  • Personal Identity – reinforcing one’s own values and identity.

    个人认同 – 强化自身的价值观与身份。

  • Integration and Social Interaction – connecting with others, finding a sense of belonging.

    整合与社会互动 – 与人连接,寻找归属感。

  • Entertainment – escapism, relaxation and enjoyment.

    娱乐 – 逃避现实、放松和享受。

8. Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Model | 斯图亚特·霍尔的编码/解码模型

Stuart Hall argued that media texts are encoded with preferred meanings by producers and then decoded by audiences, who may not always accept the intended message. He identified three reading positions: the dominant‑hegemonic reading (audience fully accepts the preferred meaning), the negotiated reading (broadly accepts but modifies some elements to fit personal experience) and the oppositional reading (audience rejects the preferred meaning entirely).

斯图亚特·霍尔指出,媒体文本由制作者编码进首选意义,然后由受众解码,而受众不一定接受原意。他识别出三种解读立场:主导-霸权式解读(受众完全接受首选意义),协商式解读(大体接受但修改某些元素以适应个人经验),对抗式解读(受众完全拒绝首选意义)。

Encoder → Message → Decoder

编码者 → 讯息 → 解码者

Readings: Dominant | Negotiated | Oppositional

解读:主导式 | 协商式 | 对抗式

9. Genre Theory: Neale’s Repetition and Difference | 类型理论:尼尔的重复与差异

Steve Neale argued that genre relies on a balance of repetition (the familiar conventions that audiences expect) and difference (variations and innovations that keep the genre fresh). Too much repetition leads to staleness; too much difference and the genre becomes unrecognisable. Applying this formula can help you analyse why a sci‑fi film feels both familiar and surprising.

史蒂夫·尼尔提出,类型依赖重复(观众期待的熟悉惯例)与差异(保持新鲜感的变体与新意)之间的平衡。过多的重复导致陈旧;过多的差异会使类型无法辨认。运用这一公式可以帮助你分析为何一部科幻片既熟悉又令人惊喜。

Genre = Repetition + Difference

类型 = 重复 + 差异

10. Key Media Language Terms | 核心媒体语言术语

Mastering the vocabulary of media language strengthens every analysis. Below is a quick‑reference table of essential shot types, camera angles and editing techniques. In the exam, always pair the term with a specific denotation and a connotation linked to the text you are studying.
