1. Understanding Case Studies in Sociology |
A sociological case study is a focused investigation of a real or imagined social situation. It could describe a family, a school, an incident of crime, or a community experiencing change. Your job is to read the clues, spot sociological patterns, and then explain them using accurate subject vocabulary. This is not about personal opinions; it is about applying what you have learned about social structures, inequalities, culture and identity to make sense of the material in front of you.
In SQA assessments, case studies often appear in the ‘Describe’ and ‘Explain’ questions. A typical National 5-style question might give you a short paragraph about a pupil who has been excluded from school and then ask you to use two sociological concepts to explain what is happening. Similarly, a Year 9 classroom exercise might present a case of a family where gender roles are changing and ask you to link it to feminist or functionalist views. The core skill is linking evidence to theory.
2. The PEEL Structure for Analysis | PEEL
To write an answer that meets SQA marking standards, you need a clear paragraph structure. One of the most reliable frameworks is PEEL: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start by making a clear sociological point that answers the question. Then introduce a piece of evidence from the case study or from your wider sociological knowledge. Next, explain what the evidence shows and why it matters, using concepts like socialisation, inequality, conformity or labelling. Finally, link back to the question or to a theoretical perspective, such as Marxism or functionalism, to show deeper understanding.
For example, a ‘Point’ might be: ‘The case study shows a clear link between poverty and educational underachievement.’ The ‘Evidence’ could be: ‘Lena’s family lives in a deprived area and she works part-time to help with household bills, which leaves little time for homework.’ The ‘Explanation’ uses the concept of material deprivation and possibly relative deprivation. The ‘Link’ could connect to the Marxist idea that the education system serves to reproduce class inequality. Practising this pattern turns messy ideas into tight, exam-ready arguments.
3. Case Study 1: Socialisation & Identity |
Read the following scenario carefully. Liam is 14 and lives with his mum and older sister. His mum works shifts in a care home and often relies on Liam to cook dinner and look after his younger cousin after school. At weekends Liam helps his uncle at a car repair garage, where he is called ‘little mechanic’ and praised for being practical. At school, however, Liam feels invisible because teachers seem to value academic subjects more than vocational skills. He has started saying he is ‘not a school person’ and his attendance has dropped.
This case is rich with clues about primary and secondary socialisation, roles, identity formation and institutional labelling. The family acts as an agent of primary socialisation, shaping Liam’s practical skills and sense of responsibility. The garage functions as a secondary agent of socialisation that reinforces a positive, work-based identity. The school is also an agent of secondary socialisation, but here Liam experiences a status clash: the identity he is rewarded for outside school is devalued inside it. The concept of self-fulfilling prophecy becomes highly relevant.
4. Applying PEEL to Case Study 1 | PEEL
Let’s build a PEEL paragraph step by step. Point: Liam’s declining school attendance can be explained through labelling theory and the self-fulfilling prophecy. Evidence: The case states that teachers seem to value only academic ability and Liam now calls himself ‘not a school person’. Explanation: When an institution applies a label – in this case treating vocational ability as less important – the individual may internalise that label. Liam begins to see himself as unsuitable for academic success, which fits the idea of a self-fulfilling prophecy where behaviour aligns with the label given. His dropping attendance is both a consequence and a further reinforcement of this negative educational identity.
Link: This case supports the interactionist perspective, which focuses on small-scale interactions within schools, rather than just structural inequalities. It also highlights how a mismatch between home culture and school culture can lead to educational alienation, a theme also explored by Pierre Bourdieu through the concept of cultural capital. In an SQA answer, naming a theorist or perspective in the link section shows evaluative skill.
5. Case Study 2: Education & Inequality |
Consider a second brief case. Aisha has recently moved to Scotland. Her parents work long hours in low-paid jobs and do not speak fluent English. At home there are very few books, but Aisha borrows novels from the school library and is a keen reader. Despite her enthusiasm, her teachers notice that her written English lags behind her classmates and she rarely contributes in class discussions. The school organises a free homework club and a buddy system, and after a term Aisha’s confidence grows visibly. However, her parents cannot attend parents’ evenings because of work.
This case invites analysis of material and cultural factors in educational achievement. On one hand, material deprivation is present: low income, long working hours and limited parental time. Yet the school compensates with resources, illustrating the compensatory education approach. Culturally, Aisha’s parents may lack the cultural capital valued by the school system, but Aisha herself is acquiring it through reading. The case demonstrates that inequality is not a single fixed barrier; it is a process shaped by home, school and individual agency.
6. Applying PEEL to Case Study 2 | PEEL
Write a fresh PEEL paragraph. Point: Aisha’s early difficulties illustrate the concept of cultural capital, while the school intervention shows how policy can reduce its effects. Evidence: Her parents’ limited English and inability to attend parents’ evenings reduce their engagement with the school, a form of institutional involvement that middle-class families typically provide. Meanwhile, the school provides a homework club and buddy system that help Aisha access the dominant language codes. Explanation: According to Bourdieu, cultural capital includes language, knowledge and familiarity with the education system. Aisha initially lacks some of these resources. However, the school acts as an agent of secondary socialisation offering alternative pathways to acquire that capital, which challenges the deterministic view that working-class pupils are inevitably disadvantaged.
Link: This case aligns most closely with the social democratic perspective, which believes that targeted state intervention can level the playing field. It also shows the difference between material deprivation (which demands economic solutions) and cultural deprivation (which requires educational and social support). Remember that in SQA answers you can combine perspectives: you might acknowledge a Marxist view but then explain why this case offers a more hopeful picture.
7. Case Study 3: Crime & Deviance |
New scenario: Jamie is 15 and has been caught shoplifting for the third time. His friends dare him each time, and he feels he has to prove he is ‘not soft’. The youth offending team discovers that Jamie’s father is unemployed and his older brother has already been through the criminal justice system. Jamie’s school report notes repeated low-level disruption, and teachers describe him as easily led. In his neighbourhood, many young people see carrying a criminal record as almost normal. A youth worker argues that Jamie’s behaviour is not simply individual choice but reflects social strain and subcultural norms.
This case sets up classic crime and deviance themes: peer pressure, subcultural theory, anomie, social control and labelling. The concept of differential association – where criminal behaviour is learned through interaction within intimate personal groups – fits Jamie’s family and friends. Strain theory, from Robert Merton, helps explain how a society that values material success but blocks legitimate opportunities can generate deviant adaptations. Meanwhile, the neighbourhood’s normalisation of criminal records points to a deviant subculture where values have diverged from mainstream society.
8. Applying PEEL to Case Study 3 | PEEL
Construct another PEEL paragraph focusing on a sociological explanation. Point: Jamie’s offending can be understood through a combination of strain theory and Albert Cohen’s status frustration. Evidence: He comes from a low-income household with limited legitimate opportunities. In school he is labelled as disruptive and easily led, which denies him a positive status. The shoplifting provides recognition from his peer group. Explanation: Merton’s strain theory suggests that when people cannot achieve culturally approved goals through legitimate means, they may innovate, turning to crime. Cohen adds that working-class boys, frustrated by their inability to meet middle-class standards of success, seek status within a delinquent subculture that reverses conventional values. Jamie’s bravado and desire not to appear ‘soft’ exemplify this status-seeking rebellion.
Link: This explanation highlights the structural roots of crime, which contrasts with purely individualistic or biological explanations. A strong SQA answer might go further and evaluate the theory by noting that not all working-class youths respond this way, a point that Cohen himself acknowledged. You could also mention that interactionist labelling theory provides an additional layer: once Jamie is officially labelled a thief, the label may become his master status, making rehabilitation harder.
9. Evaluating Perspectives |
In SQA sociology, evaluation is what lifts an answer from the middle to the top of the mark scheme. Evaluation means discussing the strengths and weaknesses of a theory, comparing two different theoretical approaches, or recognising that a case study might be interpreted in more than one way. For the three cases above, you could contrast, for example, a Marxist explanation with a functionalist one, or an interactionist with a feminist interpretation.
For the Liam case, a functionalist might argue that the education system is merely performing its role of sorting individuals by talent and that vocational pathways are available. A Marxist, on the other hand, would see Liam’s experience as evidence of a system that reproduces an obedient, low-paid workforce. A feminist might add that care responsibilities and vocational roles are gendered. By bringing in these contrasts, you show the examiner that you understand sociology is a discipline of multiple interpretations, which is exactly what the ‘analyse and evaluate’ skills require.
10. Common Pitfalls & How to Avoid Them | 常见错误与避免方法
One typical error is telling the story of the case study without any sociological language. Do not simply rewrite the scenario. Use words like ‘agent of socialisation’, ‘norms’, ‘values’, ‘status’, ‘inequality’, ‘deprivation’ and ‘subculture’ to frame your answer. Another mistake is making statements without linking them to a concept or theorist. If you say ‘Liam helped at home so he was responsible’, you are describing but not explaining. You must explain through a lens: ‘This reflects the primary socialisation of gender and family roles, which functionalists argue is necessary for social order.’
Finally, avoid the drift into common-sense reasoning or personal opinion. Saying ‘I think Jamie just needs a stricter dad’ has no place in sociology. Instead, connect to concepts like informal social control, parental supervision and the impact of absent role models, using sociological vocabulary. Always ask yourself: would this sentence appear in a sociology textbook? If not, rework it until it does.
11. Practice Prompt with Guidance |
Try this new short prompt independently, then check the guidance. Prompt: Maya is a high-achieving pupil at a selective school. Her family is middle class and pays for private mathematics tuition. At parents’ evenings her father asks detailed questions about exam tiers and predicted grades. Meanwhile, her friend Kyle lives on a council estate, receives free school meals, and his parents trust the school to do what is best without further involvement. Explain why Maya and Kyle may have different educational outcomes. Use at least two sociological concepts.
Guidance: You could select concepts such as cultural capital, material deprivation, parental involvement, the hidden curriculum, setting and streaming, or the self-fulfilling prophecy. Start with a point about how cultural and economic capital interact. Evidence from the prompt: private tuition and questioning style versus free school meals and passive trust. Explain through Bourdieu’s idea that middle-class parents can convert economic capital into cultural advantages that align with school expectations. Then link to wider theories of educational inequality. Always end by evaluating: does this inevitably mean Kyle will fail? Not necessarily – mention the possibility of school compensation or individual resilience.
12. Summary & Exam Tips |
Case studies are not just stories; they are puzzles that test your ability to see society in miniature. Practice the PEEL structure until it becomes automatic. Before you write, identify which area of the course the case links to – socialisation, inequality, crime, family or education. Read the question carefully: does it ask you to describe, explain, or analyse and evaluate? Underline the command word. Plan three key sociological points you could make, each supported by evidence from the case.
Finally, use the last minutes of a timed exercise to check that every paragraph contains a link back to the question and that you have varied your vocabulary. Avoid repeating ‘this shows’ – try ‘this illustrates’, ‘this reinforces’, ‘this challenges’, ‘this reflects’, ‘this supports the view that’. For top marks, show that you can think critically: no single theory explains everything. A quick contrasts sentence like ‘However, a Marxist would argue that…’ or ‘Interactionists might focus instead on…’ can make a large difference.
避免重复使用 ‘this shows’——尝试 ‘this illustrates’、’this reinforces’、’this challenges’、’this reflects’、’this supports the view that’。
