📚 Case Study Practice |

Welcome to your practical guide for tackling case studies in Edexcel Year 10 Philosophy. Case studies are not just stories – they are carefully constructed thought experiments that test your ability to apply philosophical theories, identify assumptions, and build reasoned arguments. In this article we will walk through several classic examples, step by step, to sharpen your analytical skills and prepare you for exam success.

1. Why Case Studies Matter in Philosophy |

Philosophy is not simply about memorising names and quotes. It is a method of thinking. Case studies force you to step into a real or hypothetical situation and ask: what would a utilitarian say? How would a deontologist respond? What would a virtue ethicist praise or criticise? By working through scenarios, you learn to connect abstract theory with concrete judgement, which is exactly what examiners look for.

Additionally, case studies reveal unexamined intuitions. When you are faced with the Trolley Problem, your immediate reaction might be “of course I would pull the lever,” but digging deeper exposes tensions in your moral reasoning. The skill lies in clarifying why you hold that intuition and whether it stands up to philosophical scrutiny.

2. Key Steps in Analysing a Case Study |

Every case study can be broken down using a simple framework: identify the moral or philosophical dilemma, list the relevant facts, isolate the central philosophical question, apply at least two contrasting theories, and then weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each response. Start by reading the scenario twice – first for the big picture, second for details that carry philosophical weight.

Next, state the main question clearly. For example, in the Trolley Problem the question is: “Is it morally permissible to sacrifice one innocent person to save five?” Once the question is explicit, you can map theories onto it. Use a table to compare responses if it helps, but always follow up with evaluative commentary. Remember that exam credit comes from reasoned analysis, not from simply describing a theory.

Step Action
1 Identify dilemma and stakeholders
2 Isolate the central philosophical question
3 Apply Theory A (e.g. Utilitarianism)
4 Apply Theory B (e.g. Kantian ethics)
5 Evaluate strengths, weaknesses and tensions
6 Offer a justified conclusion

3. Ethical Case Study: The Trolley Problem |

A runaway trolley is heading down a track where five people are tied and unable to move. You are standing next to a lever. If you pull the lever, the trolley will switch to a side track, but there is one person tied on that side track. Do you pull the lever? The scenario was devised by Philippa Foot to explore the ethics of action versus inaction and the doctrine of double effect.

In a variation, the only way to stop the trolley is to push a large man off a bridge into its path. Most people who would pull the lever in the original case refuse to push the man. This divergence challenges simple utilitarian calculations and introduces the relevance of intention, physical involvement, and rights.

4. Deconstructing the Trolley Problem |

A utilitarian like Jeremy Bentham would argue that you must pull the lever because saving five lives at the cost of one maximises overall happiness. The arithmetic is simple: 5 lives > 1 life. However, the utilitarian must also consider secondary effects – if people knew that bystanders could sacrifice one to save many, would it create a climate of fear that reduces overall utility? This nuance shows that utilitarianism is not always crude head-counting.

By contrast, a Kantian would insist that you must never use a person merely as a means to an end. Pulling the lever treats the single person on the side track as a tool to save the five, which violates the categorical imperative. For Kant, the right action is not to interfere, even if the consequence is more deaths. The moral worth resides in the motive of acting from duty, not in the outcome.

5. Epistemology Case Study: The Gettier Problem |

In 1963, Edmund Gettier published a short paper that shook the traditional definition of knowledge as justified true belief (JTB). Imagine Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get a job and also that Jones has ten coins in his pocket. Smith concludes: “The man who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket.” Unknown to Smith, he himself will get the job and he also happens to have ten coins in his pocket. Smith’s belief is justified and true, yet it seems wrong to call it knowledge.

This case demonstrates that justified true belief can be accidentally true, or true for the wrong reasons. Since the 1960s, epistemologists have debated how to fix the definition – by adding a “no false lemmas” condition, or by requiring a causal connection between the fact and the belief, or via reliabilism. For your Year 10 work, you do not need to master every response, but you must show that you understand the problem JTB faces.

6. Breaking Down the Gettier Problem |

To analyse a Gettier-style case, begin by separating the belief, the justification, and the truth. In Smith’s case: belief = the job-getter has ten coins; justification = evidence about Jones; truth = Smith gets the job and has ten coins. The truth is disconnected from the justification. This gap is what makes knowledge fall short – the justification points to one source of truth while the actual truth arises from another.

You can strengthen your analysis by varying the case. What if Smith had no evidence at all? Then the belief would lack justification. What if the belief were false? Then it obviously would not be knowledge. Gettier cases are so powerful because they tick all three boxes yet intuition still rebels. A good exam answer will articulate exactly why this misfit troubles the JTB account and will sketch one alternative approach, such as adding a reliability condition.

7. Metaphysics Case Study: The Ship of Theseus |

According to an ancient puzzle, the Athenians preserved Theseus’s ship by gradually replacing every decaying plank and part. After some years, none of the original material remains. Is the restored ship still the Ship of Theseus? If not, when did it stop being the same ship? To complicate matters, imagine someone collects all the discarded original planks and reassembles them into a second ship. Which, if either, is the real Ship of Theseus?

This thought experiment probes the nature of identity over time – what philosophers call “persistence conditions.” Is identity tied to the continuity of material substance, to structural form, or to a narrative history? Different theories of personal identity face the same challenge: are you the same person you were at age five, given that almost every cell has been replaced?

8. Examining Identity and Change |

One approach to the Ship of Theseus is to adopt a spatiotemporal continuity view: the ship on display is the original because it traces a continuous path through space and time, with gradual replacement that preserves form and function. The bundle theory of material objects would support this by claiming an object is merely a bundle of properties, and the property-bundle persists even as individual components change.

Alternatively, the mereological essentialist argues that an object’s parts are essential to its identity; change any part, and you have a different object. This view struggles to explain everyday objects like cars or even human bodies. A compromise position might say that for artefacts, functional continuity is what matters, but for living organisms, biological continuity counts most. When writing your analysis, map these theories onto the case explicitly and show how they lead to different conclusions.

9. Comparing Philosophical Responses |

When comparing responses to a case study, avoid simply listing theories side by side. Instead, create a dialogue. For the Ship of Theseus, you might write: “Whereas the continuity theorist focuses on the seamless history of the display ship, the reassembly advocate insists the original matter carries the identity. The first view implies identity is a social and functional concept; the second view treats identity as a brute physical fact.” This “whereas…however…” structure demonstrates synthesis.

Another powerful technique is to apply the same theory to two variations of a case. Take the Trolley Problem and its footbridge variant. A Kantian can consistently say “do not pull and do not push” because the maxim of using a person as a mere means remains the same. A utilitarian might struggle to explain why pushing feels worse if the arithmetic is identical. Highlighting this internal tension within a theory shows higher-order evaluation, which is rewarded in top mark bands.

10. Crafting Your Own Argument |

After presenting the theories, you must take a stand. A strong conclusion does not need to be absolute – you can hold a provisional position while acknowledging its limits. For instance: “I conclude that pulling the lever is morally permissible because the distinction between doing and allowing is morally shallow in this context, yet I concede that pushing the man introduces an element of direct assault that changes the moral character of the act.”

When constructing your argument, use clear signposting: “My first reason is…”, “A possible objection is…”, “I can reply that…”. This not only makes your reasoning easy to follow but also mirrors the structure of philosophical writing expected at GCSE. Always link back to the specific details of the case study – don’t float off into abstract theory. Concrete engagement with the scenario is key.

11. Common Pitfalls to Avoid |

One frequent mistake is “story-telling” – simply retelling the case study without analysis. Assume your reader knows the scenario. Another is “theory dumping” – dropping in long descriptions of Kant or Bentham without applying them to the case. Marks are awarded for using the theory to illuminate the dilemma, not for reproducing textbook paragraphs. Stay focused on the philosophical question.

Avoid one-sided analysis. Even if you strongly favour utilitarianism, explore the strongest objection against it. This shows critical engagement. Also, be careful with language: use “argues” rather than “believes”, “entails” rather than “means”, and “justified” rather than “right”. Precision in terminology signals philosophical maturity. Finally, don’t forget to consider whether the case study has any unrealistic features that limit its usefulness – a quick evaluative point can lift a mid-level answer to a high one.

12. Putting It All Together |

Let us now model a concise analysis using the framework. Picture a new case: a doctor has five patients needing different organ transplants, and a healthy young visitor walks into the hospital. Should the doctor sacrifice the one to save the five? The utilitarian calculation seems to recommend killing the visitor, but this conclusion strikes almost everyone as monstrous. A Kantian explains why: the visitor has not consented and using him as a mere means violates a perfect duty.

Your analysis could then explore a rule-utilitarian response: if doctors were allowed to kill patients in such cases, trust in medicine would collapse, so a rule against killing actually maximises utility in the long run. Notice how this move brings us back to the same recommendation but for different reasons. You could then conclude that while act-utilitarianism appears to fail, rule-utilitarianism aligns with deontological intuitions, showing that the gap between theories can sometimes be bridged.

Practice with as many case studies as you can. Start with the classics – the ones in this article – then apply the same method to unfamiliar ones provided by your teacher. The more you practise, the more natural it becomes to spot the philosophical crux, structure your analysis, and produce the kind of well-argued evaluation that stands out in Edexcel assessments. Philosophy is a skill, and case study analysis is your training ground.
