Mastering the key terminology is essential for success in AQA GCSE Economics. This guide highlights the most important terms you will encounter in Year 10, with clear definitions and examples to help you memorise them effectively for your exams.

1. The Basic Economic Problem |

Scarcity refers to the fundamental economic problem of having limited resources but unlimited wants. Because we cannot have everything, we must make choices.

The Economic Problem arises because resources are finite and needs/wants are infinite. It forces societies to decide what, how, and for whom to produce.

Choice is the act of selecting among alternatives. Every choice involves a trade-off and an opportunity cost.

Trade-off means sacrificing one good or service to obtain more of another. It is a direct consequence of scarcity.

2. Factors of Production |

Land includes all natural resources used in production, such as minerals, forests, water, and land itself. The reward for land is rent.

Labour refers to the human effort (physical and mental) used in production. The reward for labour is wages/salaries.

Capital includes man-made goods used to produce other goods and services, such as machinery, tools, and factories. The reward for capital is interest.

Enterprise is the willingness to take risks to combine the other factors of production to create goods and services. The reward for enterprise is profit.

Factor mobility describes how easily factors of production can be moved from one use to another. Land is geographically immobile; labour may be occupationally immobile.

3. Opportunity Cost |

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative forgone when an economic choice is made. It is a central concept in economics because it forces us to consider what is given up.

Example: If a government spends £1 million on building a new hospital, the opportunity cost may be the schools or roads it could have built instead.

Free goods are abundant and have no opportunity cost (e.g. air, sunlight). Economic goods are scarce and have an opportunity cost (e.g. a car, education).

4. Demand | 需求

Demand is the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a given period.

Law of Demand: As the price of a product rises, the quantity demanded falls, and vice versa (ceteris paribus).

Extension/Contraction in demand: Movement along the demand curve caused by a change in price. A price fall causes an extension (increase in QD); a price rise causes a contraction (decrease in QD).

Shifts of demand: A whole shift of the demand curve to the right (increase) or left (decrease) caused by non-price factors: income, tastes, prices of related goods (substitutes/complements), advertising, population, etc.

Substitutes: goods bought in place of others (tea and coffee). Complements: goods bought together (printers and ink).

5. Supply | 供给

Supply is the quantity of a good or service that producers are willing and able to offer for sale at different prices over a given period.

Law of Supply: As price rises, quantity supplied rises; as price falls, quantity supplied falls (ceteris paribus).

Extension/contraction in supply: movements along the supply curve due to price changes. Shifts in supply: rightward shift = increase in supply; leftward shift = decrease, caused by factors such as costs of production, technology, taxes, subsidies, weather, number of producers.

Factor causing supply shift – Productivity: higher productivity reduces costs, shifting supply right.

6. Price Determination and Equilibrium |

Equilibrium price is the price at which quantity demanded equals quantity supplied. It is where the demand and supply curves intersect. There is no tendency for change.

Excess demand (shortage): occurs when price is below equilibrium – quantity demanded > quantity supplied, leading to price being bid up.

Excess supply (surplus): occurs when price is above equilibrium – quantity supplied > quantity demanded, causing price to fall.

Market forces act to bring price back to equilibrium whenever there is a disequilibrium.

7. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) |

Price elasticity of demand (PED) measures the responsiveness of quantity demanded to a change in price.

PED = (%Δ Quantity Demanded) ÷ (%Δ Price)

If PED > 1, demand is elastic: quantity demanded changes by a greater percentage than price. If PED < 1, demand is inelastic.

Factors affecting PED: availability of substitutes, necessity vs luxury, proportion of income spent, time period.

Total revenue test: for elastic demand, a price rise reduces total revenue;
