1. Why Study Media? |
Media saturates our daily lives. From the moment you check your phone in the morning to the streaming series you watch at night, media shapes how you understand the world. Studying Media allows you to decode these messages, question the intentions behind them, and appreciate the craft of film, advertising, news, and games. It builds transferable skills such as critical thinking, communication, and creativity, which are valued across all career pathways.
2. Media Language: The Building Blocks |
All media texts are constructed using a shared ‘language’ of signs and codes. A sign is anything that carries meaning, such as a red rose symbolising romance. Media language is built from technical codes (camera angles, lighting, editing), symbolic codes (colour, body language, mise-en-scène), and written codes (headlines, captions). Learning to spot these codes is the first step in any analysis. For instance, low-angle shots can make a character appear powerful, while blue lighting often suggests coldness or sadness.
3. Representation: Reality Reconstructed |
Media does not simply mirror reality; it represents it. Producers select and construct versions of people, places, and events. When you see a news report, a film character, or a social media post, you are seeing a carefully mediated version. The study of representation asks: whose perspective is shown? Are stereotypes reinforced or challenged? By examining gender, ethnicity, age, and social class in media, you gain insight into how power and ideology work through seemingly ‘natural’ images.
4. Audience: Who Consumes Media? |
Every media product is created for an audience. Producers target specific groups based on demographics (age, gender, income) and psychographics (interests, values). The uses and gratifications theory explains why audiences actively choose media: for information, personal identity, social interaction, and entertainment. A teen drama, for example, offers identity reinforcement through relatable characters while also providing escapist pleasure.
5. Institutions and Industries |
Media texts are produced by institutions that operate within commercial or public-service frameworks. The BBC, for example, is funded by a licence fee and has a remit to ‘inform, educate, and entertain’, whereas Netflix is driven by subscription revenue and global market strategies. Understanding institutional context helps you explain why a text looks the way it does: a Hollywood blockbuster will prioritise spectacle and wide appeal, while an independent documentary may prioritise authenticity and a niche viewpoint.
6. Narrative Theory: How Stories Work | 叙事理论:故事如何运作
Narrative is the way a story is structured and told. Todorov’s equilibrium model suggests stories move from a state of balance, through disruption, to a new equilibrium. Barthes identified narrative codes such as the enigma code (puzzles that hook the audience) and the action code (events that drive the plot forward). Propp analysed folk tales and found recurring character types like the hero, the villain, and the helper. Applying these ideas to a film or TV episode will immediately deepen your analysis and help you predict how a narrative unfolds.
7. Genre: Conventions and Hybridity |
Genre groups texts by shared conventions of iconography, setting, theme, and style. Horror films use low-key lighting, isolated settings, and sudden sounds, while romantic comedies rely on meet-cute scenarios and bright colour palettes. Audiences use genre to choose what to watch, and producers use it to minimise risk. Increasingly, hybrid genres like ‘rom-com horror’ or ‘docu-drama’ blend expectations to create fresh experiences. Spotting genre conventions, and where they are broken, is a core analytical skill.
8. Analysing Media Texts: A Step-by-Step Approach |
When analysing any media text, always start with denotation (what you literally see and hear) before moving to connotation (the meanings and associations). Describe the key technical elements: camerawork, editing, sound, and mise-en-scène. Then connect these to representation, audience appeal, and institutional context. For example, a superhero poster might use a low-angle, centred hero in a red cape against a stormy sky. Denotatively, it shows a flying man. Connotatively, red suggests power and danger, the low angle makes him look heroic, and the storm hints at conflict. This combination positions the audience to admire the hero and anticipate action.
9. Production Skills: From Consumer to Creator |
The SQA Media course will ask you to plan and create your own media products. Pre-production includes storyboarding, scriptwriting, and location scouting. Production involves filming or designing with attention to framing, lighting, and audio. Post-production uses editing to craft rhythm, continuity, and mood. Even during summer, you can practise by shooting a 30-second sequence on your phone: try different shot types, edit in a free app, and reflect on how your choices affect the story. This hands-on experience will make coursework tasks far less daunting.
10. Assessment at a Glance |
In National 5 Media, your grade comes from a question paper (exam) and an assignment. The question paper tests your analysis of an unseen media text using appropriate terminology, as well as your knowledge of media contexts and theories. The assignment requires you to produce a media product and provide a reflective analysis of your creative decisions. Knowing this structure from the start helps you focus your summer revision on the skills that will be directly assessed. Save all your analytical notes and practical experiments; they will become valuable evidence.
