📚 Year 10 WJEC Philosophy: Summer Bridging and Transition Course | 十年级WJEC哲学:暑期预习与衔接课程

Welcome to your Year 10 WJEC Philosophy summer bridging programme. This course is designed to take you smoothly from Key Stage 3 into the demands of GCSE Philosophy and Ethics. Over the coming weeks you will explore foundational issues about God, the universe, morality, and human destiny. By the end of this bridging unit, you will have a clear map of the key debates, core vocabulary, and argument structures that make up the WJEC specification. No prior knowledge is assumed—just an open mind and a readiness to question.

1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy is the love of wisdom. It uses reason and structured arguments to investigate questions that science alone cannot answer, such as ‘Does God exist?’, ‘How should I live?’, and ‘What happens after death?’. In the WJEC course, you will learn to analyse arguments, spot weaknesses in reasoning, and construct evaluative essays. Philosophy is not about winning debates but about deepening understanding.

The WJEC GCSE Philosophy & Ethics component is divided into two main areas: Philosophy of Religion and Religious Ethics. You will study arguments for God’s existence, the problem of evil, the meaning of life, and the application of ethical theories to contemporary issues. Throughout, you will be expected to refer to Christian, Muslim, and non‑religious perspectives where relevant.

WJEC GCSE

2. The Nature of God |

Before examining the arguments for God’s existence, it is essential to understand what theists claim about God. In the Western tradition, God is described as omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), omnibenevolent (all-loving), and eternal. These attributes are not merely adjectives; they form a logically consistent set and will reappear when we discuss the problem of evil.

Christians also believe God is the Creator of the universe, a personal being who can be known through prayer, scripture, and religious experience. The Islamic concept of God shares these key attributes, adding an emphasis on God’s unique oneness (Tawhid) and absolute transcendence. You will frequently compare these understandings in your exam answers.

3. The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument seeks to prove God’s existence from the fact that the universe exists. Thomas Aquinas proposed three of his ‘Five Ways’ based on causation: motion, efficient cause, and contingency. The core idea is that an infinite chain of causes is impossible, so there must be a first, uncaused cause, which Aquinas identifies as God.

For the WJEC exam, you must be able to explain the difference between linear and hierarchical causation, and evaluate challenges such as David Hume’s objection that we have no right to apply the idea of ‘cause’ to the universe as a whole. A common mistake at GCSE is to conflate the Cosmological Argument with the Design Argument—ensure you keep them distinct.

4. The Design Argument |

Also known as the Teleological Argument, this line of reasoning points to the apparent order, complexity, and purpose in the natural world. William Paley’s watch analogy is the most famous illustration: if you found a watch on a heath, you would infer a watchmaker; likewise, the intricate design of the universe implies a divine Designer.

The WJEC specification also asks you to consider the strengths (e.g. the argument from irreducible complexity) and the weaknesses, including David Hume’s criticism that the world resembles a vegetable more than a machine, and the challenge from Darwin’s theory of evolution, which explains design-appearance through natural selection without a designer.

5. The Problem of Evil |

The Problem of Evil is arguably the strongest challenge to belief in an all-loving, all-powerful God. If God is omnibenevolent, God would want to prevent suffering; if omnipotent, God could prevent it. Yet suffering exists. Philosophers distinguish between moral evil (caused by human free will) and natural evil (caused by nature, e.g. earthquakes, disease).

You will examine classic theodicies, such as the Free Will Defence (evil is the price of genuine freedom) and the Soul-Making Theodicy (suffering helps us grow morally). For the GCSE exam, you must also evaluate whether these responses are successful from the perspective of a non-religious person or a believer who finds them inadequate.

6. Religious Experience |

A religious experience is a subjective encounter with the divine. In WJEC Philosophy, you study types of religious experiences: numinous experiences (a sense of awe and mystery), mystical experiences (a direct union or insight), and corporate experiences (shared by a group, such as the Toronto Blessing). These are often cited as direct evidence for God.

William James’s four characteristics—passivity, ineffability, noetic quality, and transiency—are vital for your exam. Criticisms include the argument from psychology (e.g. Freud’s view that religion is wish-fulfilment) and the lack of verifiability. But does an experience need to be verified to be meaningful? That is a typical WJEC debate question.

7. Miracles | 神迹

A miracle is usually defined as an extraordinary event that appears to go against the laws of nature and is attributed to divine agency. The WJEC curriculum uses the definitions by David Hume (‘a violation of the laws of nature by a particular volition of the Deity’) and by R.F. Holland (a coincidence that is seen as a sign). The key is the interpretation.

Hume’s criticisms of miracles—that no miracle has been attested by a sufficient number of reliable witnesses and that people are naturally drawn to the marvellous—are essential. You must also weigh Swinburne’s response that it is rational to believe in miracles if the evidence is strong and the principle of credulity applies. Remember to link back to beliefs about God’s nature.

8. Introduction to Ethics |

The ethics section of the WJEC course asks: how do we decide what is morally right or wrong? Broadly, theories fall into absolute morality (certain acts are always right or wrong regardless of consequences) and relative morality (right and wrong depend on the situation). Deontology, Utilitarianism, and Situation Ethics represent these approaches.

Christian ethics often draws on the Bible, the example of Jesus, and natural law. Islamic ethics is rooted in the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and the concept of taqlid (following scholarly consensus). For each topic you study—such as crime and punishment, marriage and divorce, or issues of life and death—you will be expected to apply at least two ethical lenses.

9. Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a relativistic, teleological ethical theory that judges actions by their outcomes. The classic formulation by Jeremy Bentham states that the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. You will need to learn the hedonic calculus, which weighs pleasure and pain across criteria: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent.

John Stuart Mill refined Bentham’s ideas by distinguishing higher pleasures (intellectual, moral) from lower pleasures (bodily). In your WJEC essay, a sophisticated evaluation will consider the problem of justice—utilitarianism can justify scapegoating if it maximises overall happiness—and whether pleasure genuinely equals goodness.

10. Situation Ethics |

Situation Ethics was developed by Joseph Fletcher in the 1960s. It is a Christian ethical theory that rejects rigid rules and instead proposes one absolute principle: agape, or unconditional love. According to Fletcher, an action is right if it serves love in that particular situation. It is a middle way between legalism (rule‑following) and antinomianism (no rules at all).

The four working presumptions—pragmatism, relativism, positivism, and personalism—are vital to understand. For GCSE, you must contrast Situation Ethics with divine command theory and explain the criticism that agape is too vague to guide moral action consistently. The strength is its flexibility when confronting complex modern dilemmas.

11. Life After Death |

Belief in life after death is a central tenet of both Christianity and Islam, but takes different forms: resurrection of the body, immortality of the soul, purgatory, paradise (Jannah), and hell (Jahannam). The WJEC topic considers the philosophical evidence for and against: near-death experiences, dualism (the mind is separate from the body), and the argument from justice.

Plato’s argument from the cycle of opposites and Descartes’ argument from the indivisibility of the mind may appear. Materialist challenges, such as Richard Dawkins’ view that consciousness is simply brain activity, are important counterarguments. A strong GCSE answer will weigh the plausibility of each view and consider the impact of belief on ethical living.

12. Revision, Exam Technique, and Bridging Forward |

Your summer bridging course should culminate in a clear revision strategy. For WJEC Philosophy, begin by building a glossary of key terms—cosmological, teleological, theodicy, agape, hedonism—and practise defining them precisely. Create comparison tables for arguments (e.g. Cosmological vs. Design) and ethical theories (e.g. Utilitarianism vs. Situation Ethics). These tables will become your best revision tool.

When you start Year 10, your teacher will expect you to handle Part (a) questions (define, describe), Part (b) questions (explain with evidence), and Part (c) questions (evaluate both sides and reach a justified conclusion). Use this bridging course to practise one (c)‑style paragraph each week. Remember: philosophers do not just state opinions; they support them with reasons and respond to counter‑arguments. You are now ready to begin your formal GCSE Philosophy journey with confidence.
