1. Democracy | 民主

Democracy refers to a political system in which the people hold the ultimate power, typically through elected representatives. In a parliamentary democracy such as modern Britain, free and fair elections, the rule of law and individual rights are fundamental features. The extension of the franchise across the 19th and 20th centuries – from the Great Reform Act of 1832 to equal suffrage for women in 1928 – illustrates how Britain gradually moved towards a more inclusive democratic model.

2. Communism |

Communism is a political and economic ideology advocating for a classless society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. In the context of the Cold War (studied in AQA’s ‘Conflict and Tension’ units), communism was the guiding ideology of the Soviet Union under Lenin and Stalin, characterised by state control of industry, collectivisation of agriculture and the suppression of political opposition.

3. Fascism |

Fascism is an authoritarian nationalist ideology that emerged in early 20th-century Europe, emphasising dictatorial leadership, forcible suppression of opposition and strong regimentation of society and the economy. Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany are the prime examples studied at GCSE. Fascist regimes typically rejected democracy, promoted aggressive expansionism and glorified the state above the individual.

4. Appeasement |

Appeasement is the policy of making concessions to an aggressive power in order to avoid conflict. It is most famously associated with the 1930s, when British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and French leaders allowed Hitler to remilitarise the Rhineland, annex Austria and take the Sudetenland. The failure of appeasement is a key debate in AQA’s ‘Conflict and Tension: The Inter-War Years’ topic, often contrasted with the eventual necessity of confronting aggression.

5. Suffrage | 选举权

Suffrage means the right to vote in political elections. In British history, the struggle for universal suffrage was a prolonged process. The Chartist movement of the 1830s–1840s demanded voting rights for working men, while the suffragists and suffragettes campaigned for women’s suffrage. The Representation of the People Act 1918 gave the vote to some women over 30, and the Equal Franchise Act 1928 finally achieved voting equality with men.

6. Imperialism |

Imperialism is a policy of extending a country’s power and influence through colonisation, use of military force, or economic dominance. The British Empire, covering roughly a quarter of the globe at its height, is a central example in AQA’s topic ‘Migration, Empires and the People’. Imperialism brought wealth and strategic advantages to the imperial power, but it often led to exploitation and resistance in colonised territories.

7. Nationalism |

Nationalism is a sense of identity and loyalty to one’s nation, often accompanied by the belief that national interests should be placed above those of other groups or international cooperation. In the 19th century, nationalism fuelled the unification of Italy and Germany. In the 20th century, extreme forms of nationalism contributed to the outbreak of both world wars and shaped anti-colonial independence movements such as Indian nationalism led by Gandhi.

8. Propaganda | 宣传

Propaganda is information, often biased or misleading, used to promote a political cause or point of view. During the First and Second World Wars, governments employed posters, films and radio broadcasts to boost morale, encourage enlistment and demonise the enemy. Nazi Germany under Joseph Goebbels perfected the use of propaganda to control public opinion, which is examined in detail in the AQA Democracy and Dictatorship unit.

9. Armistice |

An armistice is a formal agreement by warring parties to stop fighting temporarily – it is not a peace treaty, but a cessation of hostilities that allows time for peace negotiations. The Armistice signed on 11 November 1918 ended the fighting on the Western Front of the First World War. In the AQA specification, understanding the distinction between armistice and treaty (e.g. the Treaty of Versailles signed in 1919) is important for analysing the aftermath of the conflict.

10. Totalitarianism |

Totalitarianism is a system of government that is centralised and dictatorial, requiring complete subservience to the state. Totalitarian regimes like Stalin’s Soviet Union and Hitler’s Germany sought to control all aspects of public and private life – politics, the economy, culture, education and even personal thought – through terror, propaganda and mass surveillance. The AQA topic ‘Germany, 1890–1945’ explores how the Nazis established such control after 1933.
