📚 Year 11 OCR German: Case Study Practice and Analysis | 十一年级OCR德语:案例分析实战演练

The OCR GCSE German exam requires students to demonstrate their ability to use the language in real-life contexts. Case studies and role-play scenarios form a central part of the speaking component, assessing both linguistic knowledge and cultural awareness. This article provides a comprehensive guide to building effective case studies, analysing sample scenarios, and mastering the skills needed to excel.

OCR GCSE

1. Understanding the OCR German Case Study Requirement | 了解OCR德语案例分析要求

The speaking examination consists of a role-play, a photo card discussion, and a general conversation. For the general conversation, students prepare a presentation or a case study based on one of the core themes. This is not a memorised script but a flexible set of ideas that you can adapt to the examiner’s questions. You must be able to talk about a specific topic in depth, providing opinions, reasons, and examples.

The OCR board values authenticity and the ability to speak spontaneously. Therefore, your case study should be well-rehearsed in terms of content, not word-for-word recitation.

2. Key Themes for Case Studies |

OCR German divides the specification into three overarching themes: Identity and Culture; Local, National, International and Global Areas of Interest; and Current and Future Study and Employment. Your case study can be drawn from any of these.

Popular case study topics include: a school exchange visit, a holiday experience, a part-time job, a hobby or sport, a festival or tradition, and plans for further education. Choosing a topic you genuinely enjoy will make it easier to speak with enthusiasm.

3. Building Your Case Study: Identity and Culture |

Imagine you choose the topic ‘Mein Wochenende mit Freunden’ (My weekend with friends). Begin by outlining key information: when, where, who, what you did, and your opinion.

(Last weekend I went to the cinema with my best friends. We saw a funny film and afterwards ate pizza. It was great fun because I could spend time with my friends.)

To extend your answer, add a contrasting past tense example, or talk about what you usually do. Use a range of tenses and complex structures such as ‘obwohl’ (although) and ‘weil’ (because).

4. Building Your Case Study: Local Area and Travel |

A case study on ‘Meine Stadt’ (My town) requires descriptive language and opinions about local facilities. You could describe what there is for young people, transport links, and how it compares to other places.

(In my town there is unfortunately no shopping centre, but many parks and a swimming pool. I think the swimming pool is great, although it is sometimes overcrowded.)

For travel, a case study on a holiday to Germany or an imagined trip is effective. You can practice the perfect tense (Ich bin nach Berlin gefahren) and future plans (Ich werde nächstes Jahr nach Österreich reisen).

5. Building Your Case Study: School and Future Plans |

Topics like ‘Mein Schulalltag’ (My school day) or ‘Meine Zukunftspläne’ (My future plans) are common. For school, describe subjects, teachers, uniform, and extracurricular activities. (I would like to study at university if I pass my A-levels.)

Always justify your opinions. Instead of just saying ‘Ich mag Mathe’ (I like maths), say ‘Ich mag Mathe, weil das logische Denken mir leichtfällt und mein Lehrer sehr geduldig ist.’ (I like maths because logical thinking comes easily to me and my teacher is very patient.)

6. Role-Play Scenarios: Step-by-Step |

The role-play card presents a situation, e.g., ‘You are in a German café. You want to order a drink and a cake, ask the price, and say you have an allergy.’ You must respond to the examiner’s questions and prompts.

Step 1: Identify the key tasks. Underline them on the card. Was kostet das? Ich bin allergisch gegen Nüsse.’ (I would like a cup of coffee and a piece of apple cake, please. How much does that cost? I am allergic to nuts.)

Was kostet das?

Step 3: Listen carefully to the examiner’s follow-up question. For example, if the examiner says ‘Möchten Sie Sahne?’ (Would you like cream?), you must reply appropriately, perhaps ‘Nein, danke. Ich mag keine Sahne.’ (No, thank you. I don’t like cream.) Always use polite forms (Sie).

7. Photo Card Description Techniques |

In the photo card task, you will have a picture and three questions. The first question usually asks ‘Was gibt es auf dem Foto?’ (What is in the photo?). You should describe the scene using present tense: ‘Auf dem Foto sehe ich eine Familie. (In the photo I see a family. They are sitting in the park having a picnic. In the background there are trees and a lake.)

Avoid simply listing items. Use connectives and prepositions: vorne (at the front), hinten (at the back), auf der rechten Seite (on the right side). For the second and third questions, you will need to give opinions or relate the photo to a broader topic, such as healthy eating or environmental issues.

使用连接词和介词:vorne(前面),hinten(后面),auf der rechten Seite(在右边)。

8. General Conversation: Expanding Your Answers |

The general conversation is based on your chosen theme and case study, plus a second theme. To score high marks, you must provide extended responses, not single-word answers. Use the ‘PERFECT’ technique: Point, Example, Reason, Further detail, Extra opinion, Contrast, and Tense variety.

If asked ‘Erzähl mir von deinem Berufspraktikum!’ (Tell me about your work experience!), you could answer: ‘Letztes Jahr habe ich ein Praktikum in einem Kindergarten gemacht. (Last year I did a work placement in a kindergarten. It was exhausting but very rewarding because I enjoy working with small children. Compared to my brother, who worked in an office, I found my experience much more interesting. Next year I would like to do another placement, perhaps in a primary school.)

9. Using Unfamiliar Language in the Exam |

During the exam, you might encounter unfamiliar words. Don’t panic. Use context to guess meaning, or ask for clarification: ‘Könnten Sie das bitte wiederholen?’ (Could you please repeat that?) or ‘Ich verstehe das Wort nicht. Könnten Sie es erklären?’ (I don’t understand the word. Could you explain it?)

或’Ich verstehe das Wort nicht.

It is better to show your coping strategies than to remain silent. The examiner wants to see how you manage communication breakdowns. Practice circumlocution: describing a word you don’t know, e.g., ‘Es ist ein Tier, das im Meer lebt und acht Arme hat’ (It is an animal that lives in the sea and has eight arms) for ‘Octopus’.
