Mastering media terminology is essential for success in the OCR GCSE Media Studies exam. This guide provides clear, paired definitions of the key terms you must know, organised into logical sections for effective revision. Each English explanation is followed immediately by its Chinese equivalent, helping you build confidence in both languages while you learn the concepts quickly.
1. Media Language: Signs & Codes |
A sign is made up of two parts: the signifier, which is the physical form (such as a word, image or sound), and the signified, which is the mental concept linked to that form.
Denotation is the literal, surface-level meaning of a sign – exactly what you see or hear, without any personal interpretation.
Connotation refers to the deeper, associated meanings that a sign generates based on cultural, social and emotional contexts.
Anchorage occurs when text, such as a caption or headline, fixes the preferred meaning of an image and guides the audience towards a particular interpretation.
Codes are organised systems of signs that create meaning. Technical codes include camera work and lighting, while symbolic codes include colour, body language and mise-en-scène.
Conventions are the expected ways in which codes are used repeatedly within a media form, such as the use of a question-and-answer format in a news interview.
2. Mise-en-Scène: CLAMPS |
Mise-en-scène means ‘put in the scene’ and refers to everything the camera sees in front of it. The acronym CLAMPS helps remember its elements: Costume, Lighting, Action, Make-up & hair, Props and Setting.
Costume communicates a character’s personality, status, occupation and the time period. A lab coat instantly connotes science and expertise.
Lighting creates atmosphere and can guide the audience’s attention. High-key lighting produces few shadows and suggests optimism, while low-key lighting uses strong contrasts to create mystery or tension.
Action and movement within the frame, including facial expressions and body language, reveal character emotion and relationships without needing dialogue.
Make-up and hair can transform an actor’s appearance to indicate age, health or genre. In horror, pale skin and dark eyes are conventions that connote fear and the supernatural.
Props are objects used by characters that often hold symbolic meaning. A weapon might signify power or danger, while a wedding ring can represent commitment.
Setting establishes where and when the story takes place. An urban skyline at night can connote isolation and modernity, while a rural cottage suggests tradition and safety.
3. Cinematography: Camera Shots & Angles |
Extreme close-up (ECU) frames only a detail, such as an eye or a key object. It intensifies emotion and highlights significance.
A close-up (CU) shows the face and shoulders, allowing the audience to read a character’s emotions and reactions very clearly.
A medium shot (MS) frames the subject from the waist up, balancing character with their immediate surroundings and is common in dialogue scenes.
A long shot (LS) shows the full body and plenty of the surrounding setting. It is often used to establish context or show action.
An establishing shot is a wide shot, often the first in a scene, that sets the location for the audience.
A low angle shot looks up at the subject, making it appear powerful, heroic or threatening.
A high angle shot looks down on the subject, making it appear vulnerable, weak or insignificant.
An eye-level shot places the camera at the subject’s eye height, creating a neutral and relatable perspective.
A canted or Dutch angle tilts the camera, suggesting disorientation, tension or a world out of balance.
Panning is a horizontal camera movement from a fixed position, often used to follow action or reveal a landscape.
4. Editing: Continuity & Transitions |
