For the exam, you must be able to apply this schema to both artefacts and living organisms. An acorn’s material cause is organic matter; its formal cause is the oak tree it will become; its efficient cause is the acorn’s own internal principle of change; its final cause is a mature, flourishing oak. Notice that the formal and final causes often coincide in living things, as the end goal is the full realisation of its form. Contrast this with modern mechanistic science, which typically restricts explanation to material and efficient causes only.

Also remember the second formula: treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means. These tests are deontological ‘equations’ for moral worth.

In essays, always show that you can compute the probable consequences and weigh them.

Inconsistent Triad: If God is all-loving, all-powerful, and all-knowing, then evil should not exist. Evil exists. Therefore, such a God does not exist.

The evidential problem of evil is less absolute but equally powerful: the sheer amount and distribution of seemingly pointless suffering makes the existence of a loving God highly improbable, even if not logically impossible. Theodicies are attempts to defend God by providing reasons why a loving God might permit evil — for instance, the free will defence (evil results from the misuse of free will, which is a greater good), or soul-making theodicy (suffering enables moral and spiritual growth). When revising, structure each theodicy as a response to the formula above and assess its success.

Then we could conceive of a being exactly like it but also existing in reality, which would be greater. This contradicts the definition of God as the greatest conceivable being. Hence, the assumption is false—God must exist both in the understanding and in reality.

In exams, rehearse the logical structure, the intuitive appeal, and the critical objections, notably that one cannot define something into existence.

Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection provides a non-intentional mechanism that explains the appearance of design in biology without a designer. Evaluate whether the ‘fine-tuning’ version escapes these objections.

Many theists attempt to resolve the dilemma by ascribing goodness to God’s essential character: God’s nature is the standard of goodness, and He commands only what aligns with His perfectly good nature. Then the question ‘Why is God’s nature good?’ might simply be a tautology. For revision, map out the logical options and their implications for moral objectivity, the meaning of ethical language, and the relationship between religion and morality. This dilemma remains one of the most powerful ‘formulas’ in meta-ethics.

Plato’s Theaetetus contains an early analysis of knowledge, but the classic formulation we use today states that knowledge is justified true belief. This tripartite definition seemed adequate for centuries until Edmund Gettier published a two-and-a-half-page paper in 1963 that overturned it with counterexamples where someone has a justified true belief yet intuitively lacks knowledge.

A typical Gettier case: Smith has strong evidence that the person who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket (he has seen the boss pocket ten coins and believes the boss has told him he will get the job). His belief ‘The person who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket’ is true and justified, but we hesitate to call it knowledge because it derives from false premises. This shows that the JTB formula needs an extra ‘anti-luck’ condition. Responses include adding a ‘no false lemmas’ rule, causal, or reliability conditions. Knowing the JTB formula and its Gettier problem is essential for any epistemology question.
