Year 12 AQA Philosophy: Christmas Intensive Revision Plan | Year 12 AQA

📚 Year 12 AQA Philosophy: Christmas Intensive Revision Plan | Year 12 AQA

The Christmas break is a pivotal time for Year 12 AQA Philosophy students. With Epistemology and Moral Philosophy already covered, a well-structured intensive revision plan can transform scattered knowledge into a coherent, exam-ready understanding. This plan is designed to help you revisit core arguments, practise evaluation, and build the synoptic links that examiners reward. Use each day of the holiday wisely, and you will return to school with a strong philosophical foundation.

1. Overview of the Plan and Setting Goals |

Before diving into content, define what you want to achieve. Set specific goals such as mastering the JTB definition and its Gettier problems, being able to compare Act and Rule Utilitarianism, or writing a timed essay on Berkeley’s idealism. Break the holiday into three phases: review of Epistemology, review of Moral Philosophy, and exam technique practice. Allocate 2–3 hours per day for philosophy, with clear daily targets.

Create a revision timetable that alternates topics to avoid cognitive overload. For instance, spend one morning on Rationalism vs. Empiricism, the next on Utilitarianism. Always include a short essay plan or paragraph writing at the end of each session. This active recall strategy is proven to strengthen long-term memory far more effectively than passive reading.

2. Epistemology: Defining Knowledge |

Begin with the traditional tripartite analysis: knowledge as justified true belief (JTB). Recall that for a subject S to know that P, (i) P must be true, (ii) S must believe that P, and (iii) S must be justified in believing that P. Be able to illustrate each condition with original examples. The JTB account seems intuitive but unravels when confronted by Edmund Gettier’s counterexamples from 1963.

In the classic Gettier case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get the job and that Jones has ten coins in his pocket; Smith deduces ‘the man who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket’. Unbeknownst to Smith, he himself will get the job and also happens to have ten coins in his pocket. His belief is true and justified, yet we would not call it knowledge because of the element of luck. Use Gettier-style examples to show why the justification condition needs reinforcement, such as a ‘no false lemmas’ or a causal connection requirement.

3. Rationalism vs. Empiricism |

Rationalists such as Descartes and Plato argue that the mind possesses innate ideas and that reason alone can provide substantial knowledge of the world. Descartes’ ‘cogito’ and his trademark argument for God’s existence are central. Critically evaluate his rational intuition and deduction thesis: is the idea of a perfect being genuinely innate, or could it be derived from experience? Also consider the challenges of the Cartesian Circle.

Empiricists like Locke and Hume reject innate ideas, insisting all concepts originate in sense experience. Locke’s ‘tabula rasa’ claim and his distinction between primary and secondary qualities set the stage. Hume’s fork divides all knowledge into relations of ideas and matters of fact, and his copy principle further grounds concepts in impressions. A high-level essay will contrast the explanatory power of empiricism with its difficulty in accounting for necessary truths and concepts like substance or self.

4. Direct and Indirect Realism |

Direct realism claims that we perceive physical objects immediately, without any mental intermediary. Its strength lies in its alignment with common sense. However, it faces potent challenges: the argument from illusion (a straight stick appears bent in water) and from hallucination (we can have experiences of objects that do not exist). If perceptions can be indistinguishable from genuine cases, how can we be sure we are in direct contact with reality?

Indirect realism, most famously Locke’s representative realism, proposes that we perceive mental sense-data caused by physical objects. This explains illusions and hallucinations elegantly because sense-data can exist without a corresponding external object. Yet the view generates a veil of perception problem: if we only ever access sense-data, how can we know that physical objects resemble them or even exist? This leads to scepticism about the external world, which Berkeley seeks to dissolve by denying matter altogether.

5. Berkeley’s Idealism and the Problem of the External World | 贝克莱唯心论与外部世界问题

Berkeley’s master argument attacks the very intelligibility of mind-independent objects. He asks: can you conceive of an object existing unperceived? If you try, you are yourself conceiving it, so the object you imagine is still in relation to a mind. From this, he concludes that ‘to be is to be perceived’ (esse est percipi). Physical objects are merely collections of ideas, and their continued existence is guaranteed by God’s infinite mind.

Assess Berkeley’s idealism critically. It avoids the veil of perception and is ontologically parsimonious, but it is highly counter-intuitive and seems to conflate perceptions with objects. Moreover, the role of God is essential; if God does not exist, Berkeley’s system collapses into solipsism. The argument from the persistence of unobserved objects, like a tree falling in a forest, can be tested against his theory.

6. Scepticism and Responses |

Philosophical scepticism questions whether we can have any knowledge of the external world. Descartes’ evil demon and brain-in-a-vat scenarios suggest that all our sensory experiences could be systematically deceptive. The problem is that any evidence we cite against scepticism might itself be part of the deception. Reliabilism offers a response: a belief counts as knowledge if it is produced by a reliable cognitive process, even if the subject cannot rule out the sceptical hypothesis.

Another response is contextualism, which claims that the word ‘knows’ has different truth conditions in ordinary and philosophical contexts. In everyday life, I know I have hands; in a philosophy seminar, the standards rise and I may not. Evaluate whether these responses answer the sceptic or merely shift the goalposts. Descartes’ own response via God’s non-deceiving nature is widely criticised for circularity.

7. Moral Philosophy: Utilitarianism |

Bentham’s Act Utilitarianism uses the principle of utility to maximise pleasure and minimise pain. The hedonic calculus measures intensity, duration, certainty, and other factors of pleasures produced by an action. This makes it a democratic and seemingly quantifiable theory. However, it faces major criticisms: it is too demanding, it can justify intuitively wrong acts (e.g. punishing an innocent person to quell a riot), and it ignores the separate value of individuals.

Mill refined utilitarianism by introducing higher and lower pleasures, arguing that intellectual pleasures are intrinsically superior to bodily ones. He also moved towards Rule Utilitarianism: we should follow rules that, if generally adopted, lead to the greatest happiness. This helps avoid some counter-intuitive conclusions of act utilitarianism. Yet, the problem of estimating overall happiness and the potential collapse of rule utilitarianism into act utilitarianism remain serious weaknesses.

8. Kantian Deontological Ethics |

Kant’s ethics is grounded in the concept of a good will, the only thing good without qualification. An action has moral worth not because of its consequences but because it is done from duty, out of respect for the moral law. The Categorical Imperative provides a test for maxims. The first formulation, the Formula of Universal Law, requires that one act only on maxims that can be consistently willed as universal laws.

Apply the universalisation test to the maxim of making a false promise to repay a loan. A world where everyone falsely promised would undermine the institution of promising, rendering the maxim self-defeating; thus it is impermissible. The second formulation, the Formula of Humanity, demands that we treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always as an end in itself and never merely as a means. Criticisms include the problem of conflicting duties and the theory’s alleged inability to account for emotions and personal relationships.

9. Aristotelian Virtue Ethics |

Aristotle’s ethics centres on eudaimonia, often translated as flourishing or happiness, achieved by living a life of virtue in accordance with reason. The function argument holds that the good for humans lies in performing their characteristic function—rational activity—well. Virtues are character traits that enable us to do so, and each virtue lies in a mean between two vices, e.g. courage is the mean between cowardice and rashness.

Virtue ethics shifts the focus from individual actions to the whole life and character of the agent. This overcomes some limitations of both utilitarianism and deontology by emphasising moral education and practical wisdom (phronesis). However, it is criticised for lacking clear action-guidance in moral dilemmas; telling someone to ‘act as a virtuous person would’ does not settle whether one should lie to protect a friend. The possibility of circularity in defining virtue and eudaimonia also arises.

10. Meta-ethics: Moral Realism and Anti-realism |

Meta-ethics examines the meaning and nature of moral language. Moral realism holds that moral properties exist mind-independently and moral judgements can be true or false. Naturalism, a form of realism, claims moral properties are natural properties that can be studied empirically. Bentham’s identification of ‘good’ with pleasure is an example. Moore’s open question argument challenges naturalism by showing that for any natural property N, we can always meaningfully ask ‘Is N good?’, suggesting goodness is a simple, non-natural property.

Moral anti-realism denies that mind-independent moral properties exist. Emotivism, as proposed by Ayer, claims moral statements like ‘Murder is wrong’ merely express feelings of disapproval and are neither true nor false (‘Boo to murder!’). Error theory, advanced by Mackie, concedes that moral statements aim to describe objective values but systematically fail because no such values exist; all moral claims are false. Evaluate how well these theories explain moral disagreement and the apparent objectivity of moral demands.

11. Optional: Philosophy of Religion – Arguments for God’s Existence |

If your school has covered the metaphysics of God, this is the time to consolidate. The teleological argument, especially Paley’s watch analogy, argues that the complexity and apparent purpose in nature imply an intelligent designer. Hume’s criticisms from Philo are devastating: the analogy between a watch and the universe is weak; even if we grant a designer, it does not prove the God of classical theism; and the existence of evil suggests a flawed designer at best.

The cosmological argument, in its various forms, seeks a cause or explanation for the existence of the universe. Aquinas’ Third Way argues from contingency to a necessary being. Criticise the argument by asking why the necessary being must have the attributes of God, whether the universe as a whole requires a cause, and whether an infinite regress is genuinely impossible. Russell’s response that the universe is just a ‘brute fact’ is a classic counter.

12. Exam Technique and Common Mistakes |

AQA examiners emphasise that AO1 (knowledge and understanding) must be precise and integrated with AO2 (evaluation). Avoid mere ‘shopping lists’ of theories. Instead, explain theories clearly, using technical vocabulary such as ‘a priori’, ‘maxim’, ‘hedonic calculus’. Then, in the same paragraph, introduce a critical point, not as a separate, tacked-on section. For example, after outlining Bentham’s calculus, ask: ‘Is it possible or desirable to quantify pleasure?’

AQA 考官强调 AO1(知识与理解)必须精确且与 AO2(评价)融为一体。

Practice writing timed 9-mark and 15-mark responses under exam conditions. A common error is spending too long on exposition and running out of time for evaluation. Use the PEAEL structure (Point, Explain, Analyse, Evaluate, Link) to ensure each paragraph drives the argument forward. Also, explicitly address hypothetical objections: ‘A utilitarian might reply that… however, this response fails because…’ This shows evaluative depth. Finally, review past papers and mark schemes to internalise the standard required.
