1. Course Overview: OCR A Level Geography | 课程概览:OCR A Level 地理

The OCR A Level Geography specification (H481) is linear, meaning all exams are taken at the end of Year 13. Year 12 typically covers the foundational modules: Physical systems (Landscape Systems and Earth’s Life Support Systems) and Human interactions (Changing Spaces; Making Places and one Global Connections option). You will also begin preparing for the Non-Exam Assessment (NEA), the independent investigation, which counts for 20% of the final grade.

There are three examined components: Component 01 Physical systems (1 hour 30 minutes, 22%), Component 02 Human interactions (1 hour 30 minutes, 22%), and Component 03 Geographical debates (2 hours 30 minutes, 36%). The debates paper draws on synoptic links between physical and human topics. The NEA makes up the remaining 20%.

Understanding the assessment structure early will allow you to see how skills and content are interwoven. Each paper tests both your knowledge and your ability to apply it to unfamiliar contexts, so learning must go beyond memorisation.

2. Transition from GCSE: Bridging Core Concepts | 从 GCSE 过渡:衔接核心概念

A Level Geography builds on GCSE themes but demands deeper understanding, more rigorous analysis, and the ability to evaluate complex interactions. Key concepts like systems thinking, feedback loops, and sustainability become more prominent. You should be comfortable with qualitative and quantitative data, map skills, and basic statistical tests.

To bridge the gap effectively, revisit your GCSE case studies on coastal processes, urban change, and globalisation. Recognise that at A Level, you will not just describe patterns but explain them using models like the coastal sediment cell or the concept of placemaking. Familiarity with command words such as ‘assess’, ‘evaluate’, and ‘to what extent’ is crucial.

You will also notice an increased emphasis on synopticity – linking different parts of geography. For example, you might connect carbon cycle feedback to coastal flood risk. Strengthen your ability to construct well-reasoned arguments using geographical evidence from both physical and human realms.

3. Physical Geography: Coastal Landscape Systems |

In this optional landscape system, you study coastal environments as open systems with inputs, outputs, stores, and flows. Key processes include erosion (abrasion, hydraulic action, attrition, solution), mass movement, and longshore drift. You will examine landforms such as cliffs, wave-cut platforms, beaches, spits, and bars, and link them to wave type, sediment supply, and geology.

OCR requires you to apply a systems approach to coastal management. Study both hard engineering (sea walls, gro
