1. What is Economics? |

Economics is a social science that studies how individuals, firms, and governments allocate scarce resources to satisfy unlimited wants. It is divided into two main branches: microeconomics, which examines the behaviour of individual economic agents such as households and firms, and macroeconomics, which looks at the economy as a whole, focusing on issues like unemployment, inflation, and economic growth.

A crucial distinction in economics is between positive statements (objective, fact-based claims that can be tested) and normative statements (subjective, value-based opinions that cannot be proven). As you progress, you will learn to support arguments with evidence while recognising the role of value judgements.

2. The Fundamental Economic Problem: Scarcity and Choice |

The basic economic problem arises because resources (land, labour, capital, and enterprise) are finite, while human wants are infinite. This forces societies to answer three fundamental questions: What to produce? How to produce? For whom to produce?

Scarcity means that choices must be made, and every choice involves an opportunity cost – the next best alternative forgone. Understanding opportunity cost is central to economic reasoning, and it applies to all decision-makers, from individuals to governments.

3. Production Possibility Curves (PPCs) |

A Production Possibility Curve (PPC) illustrates the maximum combinations of two goods an economy can produce with all resources fully and efficiently employed. Points on the curve represent productive efficiency; points inside indicate underutilization of resources. The PPC helps visualise opportunity cost, showing that increasing the output of one good means sacrificing some of the other.

The PPC can shift outward over time due to an increase in the quantity or quality of resources, or technological progress. This represents economic growth. The shape of the PPC (typically concave to the origin) indicates increasing opportunity cost as resources are not equally efficient in producing all goods.

4. Demand and Supply: The Market Mechanism |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices, ceteris paribus. The law of demand states that, all else equal, as price falls, quantity demanded rises, resulting in a downward-sloping demand curve. Supply, conversely, is the quantity producers are willing and able to offer; as price rises, quantity supplied increases, creating an upward-sloping supply curve.

The interaction of demand and supply determines the equilibrium price and quantity in a market. Any change in a non-price determinant – such as income, tastes, costs of production, or technology – will shift the demand or supply curve, leading to a new equilibrium. This model is fundamental to understanding how markets work and is heavily examined in CIE Economics.

5. Elasticity: Measuring Responsiveness |

Elasticity is a vital analytical concept that measures how much one variable responds to changes in another. Price elasticity of demand (PED) can be expressed as:

PED = % Δ Qd ÷ % Δ P

PED = 需求量变动的百分比 ÷ 价格变动的百分比

PED indicates whether demand is elastic (>1), inelastic (<1), or unitary (=1). Understanding PED helps firms predict the effect of price changes on total revenue. Other important elasticity measures include income elasticity of demand (YED), cross-price elasticity of demand (XED), and price elasticity of supply (PES).

At AS Level, you will learn to calculate and interpret these values, as well as to evaluate their significance for producers, consumers, and government policy.

6. Market Failure and Government Intervention |

Market failure occurs when the free market fails to allocate resources efficiently, leading to a loss of social welfare. Common causes include externalities (both positive and negative), public goods, information gaps, and market power. For instance, negative externalities like pollution cause overproduction because producers do not bear the full social cost.

Governments intervene to correct market failure through measures such as taxes, subsidies, regulations, tradable permits, and direct provision. A key skill in CIE Economics is to analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions, considering potential unintended consequences and government failure.

7. Introduction to Macroeconomics: Key Indicators |

Macroeconomics focuses on the performance of an economy as a whole. Key indicators you will study include the rate of economic growth (measured by GDP), unemployment rate, inflation rate, and the balance of payments on current account. You need to understand how these are measured, their limitations, and the links between them.

For example, Gross Domestic Product (GDP) measures the total value of output produced within a country’s borders. However, real GDP per capita is a better indicator of living standards, though still imperfect as it excludes non-market activities and income distribution. Similarly, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is used to track inflation but suffers from substitution bias.

8. Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply |

The Aggregate Demand (AD) curve shows the total spending on domestic goods and services at different price levels. It is composed of consumption (C), investment (I), government spending (G), and net exports (X – M). The AD curve slopes downward due to the wealth, interest rate, and international trade effects.

Aggregate Supply (AS) represents the total output firms are willing to produce. In the short run, the SRAS curve is upward sloping because input prices (especially wages) are sticky. In the long run, the LRAS curve is vertical at the full employment level of output, showing that in the long run, supply is determined by factor quality and quantity rather than the price level. Shifts in AD and AS explain changes in national output and the price level.

9. Essential Study Skills for Success |

CIE AS Level Economics requires more than just memorising definitions. You must develop the ability to apply concepts to real-world situations, analyse data, and construct well-reasoned essays. Start building a glossary of key terms now, and regularly read reputable economics news sources such as The Economist or BBC Business to see theory in action.

Practice drawing and interpreting diagrams accurately. In CIE exams, well-labelled diagrams are essential for high marks, often forming the core of your explanation. Use the summer to familiarise yourself with the syllabus structure and past paper command words such as ‘explain’, ‘analyse’, and ‘evaluate’, which each demand a different depth of response.

10. Summer Bridging Tasks |

To get a head start, try completing the following tasks before the term begins:

  • Create a mind map linking the basic economic problem, opportunity cost, and PPCs.

  • Find a news article about a government intervention (e.g. a sugar tax) and identify the type of market failure it aims to correct.

  • Calculate a percentage change for practice: if the price of a good rises from £20 to £25, what is the percentage increase?

  • List five key macroeconomic indicators and write a short description of what each measures.

  • Draw a fully labelled market diagram for any product, showing the initial equilibrium and the effect of a decrease in consumer income.

These tasks will activate your prior knowledge and build confidence. Remember, the goal is not to master everything now, but to establish a framework you can build upon in class.
